How To Use
This excel document is designed to help you to identify carbon reduction opportunities for your organisation / business a

In line with the Carbon Management Calculator, the opportunities have been divided into each of the categories address

                     Establish a boiler fuel Monitoring & Targeting Programme using

                     technologies (Solar thermal, biomass, heat pump, CHP, district
                     heating). This should only be completed following the
                     implementation of energy/carbon efficiency measures




Agriculture Sector   Pig Farming - Used boxed creeps instead of open creep areas in
                     order to minimise heat loss. Investigate underfloor heating as an
                     Dairy Farming - If milking parlours are heated, consider a switch
                     to radiant heating
                     Horticulture - Investigate the use of thermal screens as a method
                     of reducing heat loss from a greenhouse & ensure air infiltration
                     is minimised


Mining Sector Only   Generators - Ensure generator is correctly sized for current
                     application. In order to maintain efficiency, diesel generators
                     should run at at least 65 - 70% of their maximum rated load.
                     Avoid short periods of low load running
                     Service the generator regularly to ensure efficient performance


                     Establish a generator fuel monitoring & targeting programme
                     Investigate the use of renewable & sustianable energy
                     technologies (biomass, CHP etc.). This should only be
                     completed following the implementation of energy/carbon
                     efficiency measures

All Sectors - except Mining Use Vehicle Telemetric and Tracking systems to establish a
                            transport fleet Monitoring & Targeting Programme focussing on
                            mileage travelled, fuel consumption, km/litre, duration of
                            trips/stops, weight carried, vehicle age profile, carbon emisions

                              Minimise Idling - Avoid over reliance on vehicle battery for
                              laptops, tail lifts, power tools etc. Considered fitting a dedicated
                              battery pack for these parasitic applications. Choose suitable
                              times and routes to travel in order to avoid the idle and excess
                              fuel consumption associated with traffic congestion


                              Investigate the use of biofuel, electric hybrid, hydrogen or other
                              low emission vehicles
                              Vehicle Aerodynamics - Remove unnessary roof racks & bull
                              bars and cover open load trucks in order to minimise drag

                              Vehicle Load - Remove all unnessary loads/weight from the
                              vehicle
                              Investigate the use of fuel additives which can increase fuel
                              efficiency
                              Forklifts - Investigate the use of rechargeable electric forklifts as
                              replacement for forklifts fueled by gasoline, propane or diesel
                              fuel. Even when accounting for power plant emissions, electric
                              forklifts produce fewer emissions.
                              Tyre Pressure - Ensure tyres are pumped to the manufacturers
                              recommended levels. Low tyre pressure increases rolling
                              resistance which can lead to increased fuel consumption

                              Logistical Solutions - Consider using larger capacity vehicles in
                              an attempt to reduce the amount of deliveries required.
                              Investigate opportunities for using more locally sourced materials
                              and customers in an attempt to cut transport fuel consumption


                              Iniatiate a fleet wide preventative maintenance programme in an
                              attempt to increase fuel efficiency

                              Service vehicles regularly in an attempt to increase fuel
                              efficiency


Mining                        Investigate the use of a mobile crusher - mobile crushers consist
                              of crushers, conveyors & screeners and can work unattended at
                              the quarry face, thus eliminating the blasting, transportation and
                              offsite crushing
                              Ensure crusher capacity is matched to load and material to be
                              crushed.
                              Ensure plant is not left idling unnecessarily
                              Forklifts - Investigate the use of rechargeable electric forklifts as
                              replacement for forklifts fueled by gasoline, propane or diesel
                              fuel. Even when accounting for power plant emissions, electric
                              forklifts produce fewer emissions.
Match the capacity of the crusher and the conveyor with load and
type of material to be crushed. If a crusher designed for 120
tonnes per hour is operated at 90 tonnes per hour, it will use
more energy per tonne of output.

All Sectors                 Lighting - Commission an evaluation of the current lighting
                            system to ensure that the most energy effective light fittings,
                            controls & operating practices are in place. Maximise the use of
                            natural daylight wherever possible
                            HVAC - Retrofit energy savings control devices to HVAC systems
                            (weather compensation, deadband control, thermostats, timers,
                            programmers). Ensure distribution network is well insulated (heat
                            exchangers, pipes, ducts, valves, flanges) and that the system is
                            serviced regularly. Establish a HVAC Monitoring & Targeting
                            Programme using suitable EPIs (Energy Performance Indicators)
                            for the site such as kWh/m 2 or kWh/person etc.


                            Refrigeration - Improve housekeeping & maintenance of
                            refrigeration systems - Areas to focus on include doors
                            seals/gaskets, temperature control, Energy Monitoring &
                            Targeting, energy efficient lighting, condenser cleaning, adequate
                            ventilation, defrost schedules, refrigerant leakage. Technology
                            such as automatic air purgers, electronic expansion valves,
                            compressor heat recovery, Variable Speed Drives (VSDs),
                            automatic defrost control & high quality insulation should also be
                            considered for larger installations


                            Electrical Heating - Replace electric heating and use renewable
                            or sustainable energy heating technologies

                            Other equipment - Ensure all equipment is set to enter power
                            save mode after a set period of inactivity and that all staff are
                            ecouraged to turn off equipment after use


Manufacturing Agriculture Compressed Air - Commission an evaluation of the compressed

              cycling. Consider providing financial assistance to those who use
              public transport. Perhaps pass on the benefit of not having to pay
              for another car parking space.

              Allow employees flexible working hours and work practises if it
              will lead to a reduction in commuting emissions - work from home
              1 or 2 days per week if feasible
              Providing good onsite facilities for cyclists such as an adequate
              number of showers and secure bicycle parking will encourage a
              shift towrds cycling
              Cycling - The new €200 parking levy that will come into effect in
              many city centres is another reason to shift to a different mode of
              transport. Under the government’s new cycle-to-work scheme
              employees will be able to buy a new bike and safety equipment
              up to the value of €1000 euro.
