                       NOVEMBER, DECEMBER 2009
                            JANUARY 2010
Hello and welcome to our latest newsletter

I would like to take this opportunity to wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a Happy 2010!

Good news! - Aly Hodgkinson has kindly volunteered to take on the role of web master for the
Twins Club. Unfortunately over the last couple of years it has become somewhat neglected
and so therefore not of much use to anyone, also not a good advert for the Club. Over the
next few months she hopes to bring it completely up to date, including meeting dates, for sales
and the latest newsletter making it of more use to members and new contacts alike. Keep a
look out at: www.derbytwinsclub.co.uk. If you have any ideas for what we should include,
please get in touch - see contacts page.

If you have any websites you find particularly useful or helpful, please let us know so that we
can include links from our own website.

Don’t forget the children’s Christmas Party, this will take place during the meeting on
December 11th at the Broadway Baptist Church, Derby. See inside for more details.

TAMBA

If you get a chance to look at the Tamba website: www.tamba.org.uk it features a report
covered recently in the Guardian newspaper: “1000’s of Parents denied a say in their
Children’s schooling”, covering problems encountered by parents of multiples within the school
system.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED – BROADWAY MEETING

There is now a rota system in place for opening up and clearing away at the monthly meetings.
We can always use more help though, so if you are able to lend a hand please get in touch
with Sara. Please note that with effect from January the meeting will start slightly later at
10.00.

Contact: Sara Lewis (01773) 827598 or e-mail: sarajustin@btinternet.com.

The Broadway meeting is held on the second Friday of each month and is open to
everyone, non members and expectant parents/carers are welcome to attend. It is
a very informal meeting, just a chance to have a chat and a drink with people in a
similar situation to yourselves. So come along, any time between 10.00 am and
11.30 am and meet others who feel just as exhausted as you do!! There are toys
out for all pre-school aged children, plenty to keep them amused. The cost is £1.50
per family. All refreshments are included in the price.

If you require further details or directions please contact Sara Lewis on 01773 827 598 or e-
mail sarajustin@btinternet.com or Vicky Knights on 01332 661559 or e-mail:
garry.knights@btinternet.com. See Dates for Your Diary at the end of this newsletter for all
meeting dates for 2009. Please note slightly later starting time for these meetings.

CHILDREN’S CHRISTMAS PARTY

The children’s Christmas party will be held at the December meeting on Friday
11th December. Tickets will be £5.50 per family which includes a buffet and
present from Santa. It would be lovely to see you for some festive fun and
nibbles. This party is aimed at pre-school aged children.

Tickets

In order for us to co-ordinate the buffet and so that Santa knows how many presents to bring
along we have set a deadline of 27th November for buying tickets. If you’ve not got yours yet
you can get them at the November meeting or contact Sara on 01773 827598 or e-mail:
sarajustin@btinternet.com. The tickets can then be posted out to you.

Raffle Prizes

If you are coming along to the Christmas party and are able to donate something towards our
raffle it would be greatly appreciated. Please bring along with you on the day, but don’t wrap it
up. Thanks.

NEXT ISSUE

The next issue of the newsletter will cover February, March and April if you have any items for
inclusion (including For Sale/Wanted Items), please send them to me by Friday 29th January

WORDS OF WISDOM

A friend of mine recently asked me to compile my top tips for her friend expecting twins. My
girls are now over 12 months old so here it is before I forget

I know there are lots of hints and tips available, but here is my summary of the ones I felt most
useful:

Contact local colleges that do nanny/childcare courses and see if they have a student who
needs a placement with babies – the best thing I ever did! They really need baby placements
and the extra pair of hands is a godsend – I used Merrill College (ask for Amanda Bailey).

Join Tamba and your local Twins Club – meeting people in the same situation help instead of
people with one baby saying how impossible your life must be! May be even go along before
you have the babies.

Don’t always buy two of the same thing, they don’t always need them together and if it turns
out to be rubbish then you haven’t wasted your money twice.

Definitely tell people to bring round food NOT flowers when you are home with the babies in
the first few weeks! Home cooked food for the freezer really is much more use as I found very
little time to actually cook for a while.

I found that I thought I might like certain things or do things in a certain way, but we have
nearly always changed our mind! If it does work, try it differently.

A travel cot downstairs saves lots of running up and down and much better than trying to
negotiate two moses baskets – I packed mine up two days after getting home from hospital.

We kept the babies in the same cot and found it harder to separate them later, and I know
people that have put their twins in separate rooms straight away. I think it really depends on
the babies but keep an open mind.

There are so many different opinions on feeding, and such a personal choice. We fed them
together at first and I used an EZ2 Nurse feeding pillow (can be used for bottle and breast
feeding) and it was really good. We woke the other up as one woke to feed in the night and
then it was all over in one go. Once on solids though, they each went at their own pace….

We wish we had bought car seats that also fitted onto a pushchair to save getting the babies in
and out of things so much, but do your research as cost can be an issue here.

If anyone offers help of any kind, just say YES very quickly.

Toni Hibbert – Mum to Jody and Katy (16 months old).

Thanks Toni, does anyone else have any words of wisdom for us?

Is there anything you would like to see covered in this newsletter? Can you let other readers
know of a particularly good buggy/car seat/high chair? Have you bought something you really
wish you hadn’t – please let others know. What was the best piece of equipment you bought,
or just snippets of advice, having been there, done that and got the t-shirt! You can contact
me via e-mail: carol@derbytwinsclub.co.uk, write to: Derby Twins Club c/o, 19 Silverburn
Drive, Oakwood, Derby. DE21 2JJ or ring: 01332 830833. Come on folks help me out, it will
only take you a few minutes.
