Legal Assistant Resume Sample! The Single Page Lawyer Resume

In this competitive legal market, employers are bombarded with resumes. In
most cases, they do no have the time or manpower to give resumes more than
a cursory two-minute glance to make an initial determination. What does this
mean for your resume? The formatting on your lawyer resume should be
impeccable to give the reader an immediate positive impression. You should
also consider submitting a single page lawyer resume; shortening the length
of your resume could give you a better chance of being read and considered.

The Benefits of the Single Page Lawyer Resume

When limiting the length of your lawyer resume to one page, you are forced
to provide a precise and concise document that focuses specifically on the
skills and experience a potential employer is looking for. In other words,
you have to make the document more targeted, get rid of old, irrelevant, or
extraneous information that could be cluttering your resume. The result could
mean a more impactful resume.

If you are a recent graduate, a law student, or a lawyer who has only worked
for one employer, limiting your lawyer resume to one page may be an easy task.
If on the other hand you are an experienced lawyer, or one that has made several
transitions, limiting your lawyer resume to one page may be a tall order.
In that case, you may need an additional page. However, you can still enjoy
the benefits of the "single page" lawyer resume format if you capture the
most relevant information on the first page of your resume.

In other words, you should aim to include your education and entire work
history - or most relevant work history - onto the first page of your lawyer
resume. To know what is "most relevant" to include on that first page of your
resume, assume that a potential employer never sees the second page. This
will allow you to determine whether the information included is sufficient
to provide an employer with a good understanding of your skills and
qualifications.

Does an Employer Have to Give Breaks?
Constructing the Single Page Lawyer Resume
Your single page lawyer resume should be highly organized to include the
following sections:

* Name and contact information. You should include you name, mailing address,
at least one telephone number, and a private email address. If you have a
good LinkedIn profile, you may want to include it there as well (See
"Optimizing Contact Information On Your Legal Resume" for more information
about using your contact information effectively).

* Education. You should list the schools of higher education you attended
in reverse chronological order. One of the most common questions asked by
lawyers who are writing their legal resumes is whether to include their legal
education at the top or bottom of the resume. If you have been out of law
school three years or less, you should consider placing your education at
the top of your resume (See "Top 20 Legal Resume Writing Tips" for more
information on this topic).

* Work History. Here you should list all of the jobs you've held, and try
to limit them to law-related positions, unless you are a recent graduate of
law student. Begin with the full legal name of the company, law firm or
organization you have worked for, provide your full title, as well as your
dates of employment, and the city and state where you practiced. Finally,
provide a short description of the worked you performed, your
responsibilities, and various accomplishments. How To Workout On Your Lunch
Break?. Use active verbs to set off each sentence, keep them very brief and
to the point, and list them with bullets if you have enough space (See "Using
Active Verbs in Your Legal Resume").

* Bar Admission. Your lawyer resume should always include a separate bar
admission section. If you are short on space you can include professional
associations in this section as well. Be sure to include the year of admission
for each jurisdiction you were admitted to.

What Are The Employment Laws & Regulations For Lunch Breaks?
Information that you can easily omit on your resume is "references available
upon request" citations, and personal hobbies (e.g. reading, knitting,
gardening etc.). Because the modern resume is a marketing tool, it's best
to keep personal interests, hobbies, and other non-essential materials for
the interview process. If you are keen on listing organizations,
affiliations, volunteer work, or extracurricular activities on your legal
resume, only list those that are relevant to your practice as a legal
professional, or that are directly related to your targeted job. Again, if
it's not related to your practice or the position, do not include it.

secretaries are in demand, more so today than ever before. It is a growing
field that is expected to keep growing until at least 2014. After that, who
knows? Getting a job today will make you that much more valuable in the future
when the competition will be extreme. Legal secretary jobs are abundant and
looking for them can be as easy as going online and sending in your resume
and cover letter along with your application. You can be a legal secretary
by simply having a high school or college diploma. Most law firms like you
to at least have some office training before they will be willing to hire
you. If you have worked in an office and show that you have a real interest
in the law, then you are likely to find gainful employment in a law office.
Before sending in your resume, make sure that you read the job description
carefully and that you meet most of the qualifications. Word your resume and
cover letter to include key points that are listed in the job description. As
a legal secretary, you will be assisting lawyers with their routine daily
tasks. You might be asked to keep track of important meetings and court
hearings, contact clients for various reasons, schedule meetings, and prepare
legal documents. In addition, your boss may ask you to proofread his work
for grammatical and spelling errors. You also may be the first person a client
talks to when setting up an appointment in your law firm. Being pleasant and
professional is absolutely essential if you want to be successful in your
job. There are many places that you might be able to find a great job as a
legal secretary. Of course, law firms hire secretaries but places like
insurance companies, banks, medical facilities and some non-profit
organizations hire them as well. The health care industry usually has large
legal departments that need secretaries to work with the lawyers on staff.
Legal secretary jobs are available everywhere if you just take the time to
explore the possibilities.,,For many personal assistants, becoming an
executive assistant is a goal that many strive for. While it is true that
this kind of PA has to deal with a lot more stress than a lower level assistant
does, including a much longer work week on average, there are plenty of perks
to make it worthwhile. Salary tends to be higher, you can have a more rewarding
career progression, and there are usually more lucrative opportunities at
this level as well. With this in mind, you'll want to take steps to be the
best PA possible. The executive assistant position is among the top positions
of a career as a personal assistant. You work with the top members in a company,
and as a result you need to act and look accordingly. This means wearing suits,
exuding an air of poise and capability, and keeping your desk and office very
organized. When others look at you, they will perceive a representation of
your employer. For external clients and partners, they will assess the
business you work for reflected in how you appear and how you act.If you want
to be a great executive assistant, then you will need to make sure you have
a good communication network set up so you always know in advance what is
going to happen; in this way you can keep your employer in the right place
at the right time. Personal assistants who don't work well with others and
aren't courteous to everyone they run across are in danger of being left out
of the loop. Make sure you talk to everyone in your building and stay on the
good side of key personnel.Changes in the field of personal assistants have
been significant over the past few years, and an astute assistant to an
executive will remain current with all the new advances. This means knowing
about virtual assistants and their pros and cons to your livelihood, the
efficient use and knowledge of new and revised software relating to business,
participating in any applicable personal assistant education courses and
maybe employing a part-time personal assistant so you can make your own
workload lighter. All of these suggestions are crucial to being a successful
executive assistant. While personal assistant careers vary, they become
available all the time, and you don't want to be one of those Pas who find
themselves out of a job because they didn't take their work seriously enough.
If you do well, your executive personal assistant salary will just get better
and better along the way.,,What is fair use? It’s a question that doesn’t
seem to go away. Traditional media publications often throw blogs under the
bus for borrowing quotes and spreading news to their own audiences. While
there are certainly plenty of cases in which blogs do trample on the concept
of fair use, to say that blogs in general follow this practice is simply
absurd. In fact, as we looked at in a recent article and often don’t even
give the credit that most professional bloggers would give without thinking
twice.this week looks at a publication – the– that has reportedly filed over
30 lawsuits against blogs that it claims use its content without permission,
leading author James Rainey to ask, "So what is fair use?"How
wouldyoudescribe fair use?.Again, this is not a new question, but it is one
that has yet to be collectively resolved. We took it upon ourselves to reach
out to a number of media professionals from both blogs and traditional media
publications, as well as lawyers, and readers, with the aim of presenting
a well-rounded view of how these different parts of the media-picture see
fair use. Unfortunately, not everyone was too eager to lend their opinions
on such a touchy subject, and I have yet to receive any real response from
any of the traditional media publications I contacted (I’ll update if I
do).ViewpointsRich Ord, CEO of theand Publisher ofsays, "Fair use is
taking small amounts of content in order to add perspective or additional
information to your own content. A publisher should also link to the content
source and credit them accordingly."Marshall Kirkpatrick, Co-Editor,
VP of Content Development and Lead Blogger at popular tech blogtells
WebProNews, "Aggregation and filtering is a beautiful thing. Give me
a day with a HuffPo appearance and it’s a good day for us at ReadWriteWeb.
Excerpts with as much as three paragraphs, with attribution and a link, are
a great way to add value and share traffic. Fair use paves the way for rapid
content creation and curation – I have no fear of it at all."Here’s how
one of ourdescribed fair use: "I see fair use as similar to writing
papers. Name the source and link, if necessary and do your homework. Some
companies do not allow use of their materials at all without their permission.
There aren’t documented rules as there are for writing papers such as the
writing formats MLA or APA but they do include rules to follow when using
online content in writing.",The LawAttorney, tells us: "Fair use
is a legal doctrine under U.S Federal.Copyright law that provides for limited
use of copyrighted material without requiring permission from the copyright
owners, such as for news, research, teaching and commentary. It provides for
the legal use of third-party copyrighted material under a four-factor test:1.
the purpose and character of the use, including whether such use is of a
commercial nature or is for nonprofit educational purposes;2. the nature of
the copyrighted work;3. the amount and substantiality of the portion used
in relation to the copyrighted work as a whole; and4. the effect of the use
upon the potential market for or value of the copyrighted
work.""Kelly v. Arriba Soft Corporation,(2003) set a strong
benchmark for fair use and the Internet," Burton continues. "Arriba
Soft was found to have violated copyright without a fair use defense in the
use of thumbnail pictures and inline linking from Kelly’s website in Arriba’s
image search mechanisms. The decision was appealed.""On appeal,
the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals found in favor of the defendant," he
continues. "In reaching its decision, the court utilized the
above-mentioned four-factor analysis. First, it found the purpose of creating
the thumbnail images as previews to be sufficiently transformative, noting
that they were not meant to be viewed at high resolution like the original
artwork was. Second, the fact that the photographs had already been published
diminished the significance of their nature as creative works. Third,
although normally making a ‘full’ replication of a copyrighted work may appear
to violate copyright, here it was found to be reasonable and necessary in
light of the intended use. Lastly, the court found that the market for the
original photographs would not be substantially diminished by the creation
of the thumbnails. To the contrary, the thumbnail searches could increase
exposure of the originals."InterpretationSo how would this apply to
written content? Would a snippet and a link, designed to send traffic to the
original source, be the text equivalent of a small thumbnail increasing the
exposure of the original? It’s not so clear.Burton seems to recommend a better
safe than sorry approach. "Essentially, caution is the word when using
copyrighted content of another on your website," he says. "I
strongly recommend receiving written authorization from the copyright holder
prior to redistributing their work or link, especially if there is a
commercial interest in why you are using the work."WebProNews spoke to
Attorney Michael Donaldson of the law firm Donaldson & Callif and Pat
Aufderheide, the Executive Director for the Center of Social Media at American
University, who has worked with the university’s law school on developing
best practices for fair use,. They also spoke about fair use from the legal
perspective. Watch this clip if you’d like to hear more on the subject from
this standpoint:"Fair use is part of copyright law, and it says you have
the right to use other people’s copyrighted material without licensing it,
without paying for it, or even asking them permission under some
circumstances," said Aufderheide. "The law itself is rather vague,
so the question is , ‘how do you interpret that law?’""The newspaper
people had me pretty much in their corner until they went after the cat
people," writes James Rainey, the LA Times writer who covered the Las
Vegas Review Journal story. Basically, the story is about a newspaper
publication going after dozens of blogs for using content. To what extent
this content was used is not really delved into, but the highlighted example
is ofthat doesn’t even have ads on it, and could hardly be considered a
competing publication. In all "fairness," you shouldfor more on
these suits.Regardless of how you interpret fair use law, it appears that
the traditional media will continue to put pressure on new media. One minute
the, and the next, it’s. Of course, as Search Engine Land Editor-in-Chief
Danny Sullivan recently showcased, traditional media alsoof fair use itself.
It goes both ways. Unfortunately, traditional publications are more likely
to have the funding that bloggers may not have, when it comes to legal
disputes. Are traditional media publications justified in going after
bloggers who use samples of their content and link to the original?.,The
majority of reporters and editors now depend on social media sources when
researching their stories, according to a new survey by Cision and George
Washington University.Among the journalists surveyed, 89 percent said they
turn to blogs for story research, 65 percent to social media sites such as
Facebook and LinkedIn, and 52 percent to microblogging services such as
Twitter. In addition, 61 percent use Wikipedia. While the results indicate
the fast growth of social media as a well-used source of information for
mainstream journalists, the survey made it clear reporters and editors are
highly aware of the need to verify information they get from social media.
Eighty-four percent said social media sources were "slightly less"
or "much less" reliable than traditional media, with 49 percent
saying social media suffers from "lack of fact checking, verification
and reporting standards.""Mainstream media have clearly hit a
tipping point in their reliance on social media for their research and
reporting," said Heidi Sullivan, Vice President of Research
for.,"However, it’s also clear that while social media is supplementing
the research done by journalists, it is not replacing editors’ and reporters’
reliance on primary sources, fact-checking and other traditional best
practices in journalism."The survey also found, most journalists turn
to public relations people for assistance in their primary research. Editors
and reporters said they rely on PR people for "interviews and access
to sources and experts" (44%), "answers to questions and targeted
information" (23%), and "perspective, information in context, and
background information" (17%)."Social media provides a wealth of
new information for journalists, but getting the story right is just as
important as ever," said Don Bates, founding director of theStrategic
Public Relations program, and writing/media relations instructor."As
PR professionals increasingly utilize social media as a means of
communicating, they have a bigger responsibility than ever to ensure the
information they provide journalists is accurate and timely, provide access
to the primary sources who can verify the facts, and be knowledgeable enough
to provide accurate background and context.",Related
