Ahoy Mates of Chapter G! Yes, October is already creeping upon us and Columbus Day is the popular
holiday of the month. I don’t think I need to remind you this is the month Columbus landed on the shores of
our great nation in 1492. It was, however, surprising to me to learn our country did not officially celebrate this
holiday until 1970 on the second Monday of the month. It also happens to be the same day Canada
celebrates Thanksgiving.

For those searching for other celebrated days throughout the month, let us remember our firefighters when
National Fallen Firefighter’s Memorial weekend is celebrated during the first weekend of October. I’m sure we
all appreciate the job they do, so let’s pay tribute to them on these days. They are there for us 365 days a
year, 24 hours a day. But then, to help them out, we can also celebrate and educate ourselves during the
second week of the month when it is Fire Prevention week. For information on safety tips, simply visit
www.nfpa.org.

Ah, but let’s not forget the first week of October when Customer Service Week dons our calendar. I’m a little
confused on this one though. Having spent a little over 10 years in retail myself, I am confused as to what is
being celebrated. I, personally, find the quality of customer service in many establishments to be on a steady
decline. And yes, if I get good service, I let a manager know or make sure the tip is appropriate.

The third week of October is Food Bank week. Put on your humanitarian hat and go volunteer at a Food Bank
or maybe make a donation. In these economic times, they, too, have been hit hard.

But, my personal favorite comes in the 4th week of the month. This week celebrates Character Counts week.
This week celebrates the 6 pillars of character: trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring and
citizenship. I feel lucky because I know these traits run strong in my fellow Chapter G members.

So, here’s to you all until November: the Texas Honor Ride to San Antonio for a great cause and then a day
to give Thanks on Thanksgiving! Stay Safe and Be Wise!

                                       It’s The Law
                                     By: Terry & Susan Toye

This year our Texas Legislators introduced legislation into our legislative process that
relates to motorcycle laws in the State of Texas. This was then signed by our Gover-
nor of this great state and put into law.

At our last Chapter G meeting (August 2009) I made me mention of these laws and
that they would go into effect September 1st, 2009. I thought I would also use this
space in our monthly news letter to also reference them.

Senate Bill 1967 requires that applicants for an original class M license or class A, B
or C driver license (including commercial driver licenses and permits) with authoriza-
tion to operate a motorcycle, provide evidence of completion of an approved motorcy-
cle operator training course. It also repeals the helmet exemption sticker program.

Current law requires a person be covered with a minimum of $10,000 in health insur-
ance for injuries incurred in a motorcycle accident to be eligible for an exception for
the offense of operating or riding a motorcycle without a helmet. As of Sept. 1, the
minimum amount is removed. The bill requires the Texas Department of Insurance to
prescribe a standard proof of health insurance for issuance to persons who are at
least 21 years of age and covered by an applicable health insurance plan.
The law also increases the penalty for failure to yield the right-of-way if there is a
crash that results in injury to a person other than the motorcycle operator.

Be Safe!

                        2009 GWRRA Northwest Toy Run
                                        By: Marshall LeGard

Yes, I have been very busy with the Toy Run. It seems as if there is more to do every year to
achieve the same goal. It’s supposed to get easier…correct?

As Gene had mentioned in last month’s newsletter, I would soon be giving you a run-down of activi-
ties, dates and committees for the 2009 GWRRA Northwest Foster Children’s Toy Run. The follow-
ing information is a good start.

I will begin with the current activities. By the October Chapter “G” meeting Oct. 22nd, I will have
picked up the printed “Table Sponsorship” tickets. Since we project we will need 35 – 40 tables at
the Toy Run Sunday, Dec. 20th, we will be selling table sponsorships for $100.00 each to defray the
cost of the Toy Run. This will feed ten and entertain (10 children) and be an excellent promotional
tool for the sponsor. Checks should be made out to “BEAR” again this year. This will enable
individuals and businesses to take a tax deduction since GWRRA is not a tax-deductible association
and BEAR is a 501c3 tax-deductible organization. As last year, we have moved up the bike judging
to 12:00 noon, parade will leave at 12:45 p.m. and Santa will enter the room at 1:00 p.m. This will
minimize the time the children will have between lunch and the arrival of Santa.

The Northwest Foster Association will have the names and the list of three desired gifts from some
160 children to me by the end of the first weekend in November. I will type the “gift” card for each
child for distribution at the Chapter “G” monthly meeting Nov. 19th at the Valley Ranch BBQ
Restaurant. All members, neighboring chapters and the Blue Knights will be able to pick up the “gift”
cards at that time. You are requested to purchase “one” of the three desired gifts described on the
card (approx. $40.00). Please wrap the gift, slipping the card under the ribbon (or lightly taping it to
the ribbon around the gift), circling the description of the gift you purchased and returning it to the
Valley Ranch BBQ on Saturday, Dec 12th, between 10 –11 a.m. During that time, we will verify we
have all the gifts, circled cards and will deliver the gifts for storage until that Saturday afternoon
before the Toy Run. We do expect some changes with the foster system (children being transferred
in and out). We will continue to update the gift changes throughout the day of the Toy Run. It can get
a little wild at the end.

As you can tell, there are many folks involved with the Toy Run. There is no way our Chapter could
do this alone. Within the month of November Newsletter, there will be a list of volunteer groups and
individuals who have stepped-up to help. Should you wish to help in a specific group, contact the
chairperson or one of the Chapter G staff and we will get you involved with that team. Just you being
there and interacting with the children would be a tremendous help. The foster parents will need all
the help they can get. This is a lot of fun for the children and for us too.

New Traffic Laws in effect September 1, 2009
                                            contributed by Rick Fritz

• SB 1967 requires applicants for an original class M license or class A, B or C drivers license (including
commercial drivers licenses and permits) with authorization to operate a motorcycle, provide evidence of
completion of an approved motorcycle operator training course. It also repeals the helmet exemption
sticker program. Current law requires a person be covered with a minimum of $10,000 in health insurance
for injuries incurred in a motorcycle accident to be eligible for an exemption for the offense of operating or
riding a motorcycle without a helmet. As of Sept 1, the amount is removed. The bill requires TX Dept of
Insurance to prescribe a standard of proof of health insurance to persons who are at least 21 years of age
and covered by an applicable health insurance plan. The law also increases the penalty for failure to yield
the right-of-way if there is a crash that results in injury to a person other than the motorcycle operator.
• HB 55 make it illegal to use a wireless communication device in a school zone unless the vehicle is
stopped or a hands-free device is used. For this law to be enforced, a sign must be posted at the begin-
ning of each school zone to inform drivers that using a wireless device is prohibited and the operator is
   subject to a fine.
• HB 537 requires ALL occupants of a vehicle, no matter their age, to be secured by a safety belt, no matter
where they are seated in the vehicle.
• HB 2730 removes DPS authority to suspend a concealed handgun license (CHL) for the holder’s failure to
display the CHL to a peace officer on demand. It removes associated penalties and suspensions for the
   failure to display.
• HB 2730 increases the drivers license sanction from a one-year CDL license disqualification to a lifetime
disqualification if a person uses a motor vehicle to transport, conceal or harbor an alien.
• HB 558 allows minors to be charges with public intoxication.
