SUCCESS AND SIGNIFICANCE
A Challenge to the 2008 Graduates
John 1:6-9, 29-34
To set goals and to achieve them, to start projects and to finish them, to pursue courses and to complete
them unto graduation—all define success. Life consists in a series of successes mixed also with some
failures of course. Personal experience affirms that success demands a focused control of my actions and
the outcomes I expect.
When one lands a successful career and builds a multi-million peso home and parks a status symbol car
in the garage—like any new graduate aspires for—then what? Perhaps it will be like King Solomon’s
experience: “I denied myself nothing my eyes desired; I refused my heart no pleasure. My heart took delight
in all my work, and this was the reward for all my labor. Yet when I surveyed all that my hands had done
and what I had toiled to achieve everything was meaningless, a chasing after the wind; nothing was gained
under the sun” (Ecclesiastes 2:10-11).
Beyond success, aim for significance. Based on the gospel records about him, John the Baptist lived a simple,
successful, short but significant life. Jesus himself cited John’s significance (Luke 7:24-28).
1. John the Baptist lived a simple life, Matthew 3:1-6.
a. By our standards, he lived a weird simple homeless lifestyle (not an endorsed ideal).
b. His diet is also not appetizing for us.
· Decide on your lifestyle without assuming that it determines your success and significance.
2. John the Baptist knew himself and his mission in life, John 1:19-23.
a. He was classed with other prominent people but denied such identification.
b. His identity is linked to his personal mission and characterized his success, John 3:27-30.
· At this special juncture in your life, state or restate your personal identity and mission in life.
3. John the Baptist lived a successful and significant life.
a. John the Apostle cited his significance, John 1:6-9.
b. Jesus himself cited John’s significance: “Among those born of women there is no one greater than
John; yet the one who is least in the kingdom of God is greater than he,” Luke 7:24-28.
· Significance is the incontestable claim of people about what you meant to them and to others.
A hundred years or less from now, it will not matter what my bank account was, or what elegant house I
lived in, or the kind of status symbol car I drove. What will matter is how my life’s mission has made a
difference in some people in the small corner of my immediate world.

that promotes GCF, its mission and ministries. The Camera Club promotes awareness of GCF

And Make Him Known
As we grow in knowing Christ, we make Him known to people in Ortigas Center. We praise God
for the hundreds of people who received Christ as their Savior and Lord at the March 14 evangelism
blitz (127), Easter cantata (286), and Good Friday Reflections (46). Join us in doing follow up to
these people who responded to the gospel invitation.
Next Evangelism Blitz
The recent evangelism blitz saw 70 GCFers participating in a mighty harvest of people who
trusted in Christ as their Lord and Savior. More than 200 people (with 199 response forms
retrieved) in Ortigas Center heard the gospel in one afternoon. We invite you to join the next
blitz slated on April 25, 2008.
Manila District Prayer Fellowship
For the past three (3) months, we have been regularly conducting a prayer fellowship among
Manila residents and we have steadily seen a good number of people attending this prayer
session. On April 3 at 7:30pm, we invite all the residents of the Manila District to once again join
this time of prayer at Max's Restaurant, UN Avenue near Philamlife Building. Let us get on our
knees as we seek the Lord's leading in our ministries for this district.
