Dear Colleague,
The Organizing Committee cordially invite you to attend the National Seminar on the
exploration, protection and conservation of Biodiversity and Traditional Knowledge to be
held at the Botany Department of Gour Mahavidyalaya during February 4 & 5, 2011.

Chairman Organising Secretary

The removal of green cover, physical modification of land, injection of unlimited
amount of pollutants etc are negatively modifying all components of environment and
threatening the survival of biological elements. The district of Malda, where the
college is located, is famous for its wetland biodiversity. The rate of loss of species
(i.e. plants, animals and microbes) is increasing steadily and alarmingly. At the same
time, it is yet to be estimated the wealth of important and endemic traditional
knowledge developed by the people of appreciably large proportion of our ethnic
communities in our country those are also diminishing very quickly with the fast
inroad of the facilities of modern civilization. It is essential to check this loss
   immediately with maximum possible efforts!
It is expected that the proposed two-days long seminar will be able to throw brightest
light on the projected problems and will be able to frame some strategies for much
better and effective modes for exploration, protection, conservation and sustainable
utilization of biodiversity and traditional knowledge in this IUCN recognised
Megadiversity country. This seminar is not only covering botanical or zoological
aspects; it is also covering many other subjects like anthropology, geography,
sociology, economics, remote sensing, etc. It will also assist the authority, teaching,
non-teaching and student communities of this and nearby colleges and other
participants and their institutes for further improvement in teaching and research
facilities and to opt for the quality improvement programs.
