L       ast month, the regional Embassy of
        Sweden hosted a reception at the Dusit
        Thani Hotel in Makati to celebrate
the National Day of Sweden. The National
Day commemorates the day Gustav Vasa was
crowned King in 1523, who is considered
as the founding father of modern Sweden.
     Traditionally, during the celebration of Swe-
den’s National Day, the King and Queen partake
in a ceremony at Stockholm’s open-air museum,
Skansen, where the Swedish flag is run up the
mast, while youths in traditional peasant costume
present the royal couple with summer flowers.
     The past celebration of the National Day
in Manila was used by the regional Embassy of
Sweden to toast to the long standing and excel-
lent diplomatic relationship between Sweden
and the Philippines which dates back to 1947.
