Greetings from Disabled Peoples’ International Asia Pacific (DPI/AP). This is
an email update featuring developments in the field of disability,
developments relating to social justice and news from around the world.

Message from the Editor,
Enclosed please find a Nomination Form for DPI’S Global Women Network
seeks nominations for its ‘Emerging Young Leader’ network for the honorary
position of National Coordinator. It would be appreciated if you could please
nominate one young woman leader from your country as National Coordinator
of this Network. The nominee has to be between 20-30 years of age and must
have a proven track record of leadership qualities. Pleas send your
nominations latest by Monday, 21st May, 2012 to
dpiglobalnetwork.eywl@gmail.com.
Maybe this is interesting for some of you: The Centre for Asia-Pacific Pro Bono
(CAPPB) Secretariat is pleased to announce that the CAPPB website is now
live! This website is now home to all the information Asia-Pacific partners and
Australian pro bono providers need to know to request or provide pro bono
legal assistance through the CAPPB.

           A) Developments in the field of disability
   1. NGOs want persons with disability to take part in 2013 polls
This article is about a nationwide campaign which is organized of a group of
non-government organizations (NGOs) aimed at encouraging more persons
with disability (PWD) to take part in the 2013 elections. Please follow link.

   2. Rural areas in need of eye care
This article says: “Up to 80 per cent of people with visual problems could be
treated for eyesight improvement if there were more funding and human
resources, according to eye care experts.” Please follow link.

   3. “Seeing Thoughts" - Video Competition
Especially youths from the Pacific are encouraged to participate. The
competition is an attempt to capture and showcase the voices of youth and
their contribution to agriculture for development, whether in research, in
production or assisting a community to develop a sustainable livelihood. For

    4. A centre of hope
“Eating, getting dressed, using the toilet and saying hello are everyday things
most people do without thinking. But for children with disabilities, these
actions, which are key to helping them integrate into society, can be very
difficult, and the earlier they learn to do them, the better.” Please read

    5. Election of nine Members of the Committee on the Rights of Persons
       with Disabilities to replace those whose terms are due to expire on
       31 December 2012
The Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities is composed of 18
independent experts - persons of high moral character and recognized
competence in the field of human rights. Please visited their website and

   1. Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights
This is going on from 30th of April until the 18th of March. If you like to you can
watch the treaty bodies sessions live. It is called the UN Treaty Body Webcast,

    2. Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities
The session of the Committee was convened at Geneva from 16-20 April 2012.

   3. Child Deprivation, Multidimensional Poverty and Monetary Poverty in
        Europe
This is a paper which focuses on child deprivation in Europe and studies the
degree to which it is experienced by children in 29 countries using a child
specific deprivation scale. You can download it, please follow link.

regional integration.

   5. ASEAN human rights commission ‘toothless’: NGOs
“The ASEAN rights commission body has little to show for its more than two
years of supposedly protecting and promoting human rights in the region,
NGOs say.” Please read article.

   6. Moving closer to a rights declaration
This article mentioned that Thailand is hosting a meeting of the Asean
Intergovernmental Commission of Human Rights until Thursday to negotiate
the draft of the regional bloc's Human Rights Declaration. Please read article.
