The folk medium is well suited to the old-fashioned language; the result is a handsome, homey Christmas book that ends not with the Wise Men but with Jesus growing up in Nazareth "and the grace of God was upon him." Jay's jewel-like paintings, framed by white space, take readers around the world where desert animals, ocean creatures, and insects all anticipate the birth of a special baby, "God's great gift." The repetitive, gentle text conveys the family members' love for one another - the day begins and ends with kisses - and the watercolor and digital illustrations bring out the warmth of celebration. A group of students visit an Israeli bee farm and learn about how honey is made, just in time for Rosh Hashanah.
