This festival falls in December. This is the season for the followers of Islam to go on their pilgrimage to
Mecca. This is an annual event. Allah sent Angel Gabriel to Hira. According to the massage the fifth
law was a visit to Mecca. Hira was the cave to which Mohammed was in the habit of retiring to
meditate. He was warned that god had chosen him as an instrument for conveying his massages to
On returning home he told his wife Kadijah what had happened. Subsequently Mohammed attempted
to convey God's massage to those around Mecca but was merely ridiculed and the establishments in
Mecca were hostile to the teaching of Mohamed about the unity of God, the dignity and equality of
man and the denunciation of idols. Since Mohammed was born in Mecca he did his duty to perfection.
Kabah is in Mecca. Prophet Ibrahim had built it. Ibrahim's wife Hijra and her son Ishmail had said that
this place has miraculous powers. This place is considered very holy by followers of Islam.
This Hadji Festival is not only a mere pilgrimage. This has a religious and a social significance. On the
day they visit Mecca all people are considered equal whether they are rich or, whether they are Kings
or commoners all those who visit must dress in the robe 'Ihiram' .
This is a pilgrimage which muslin must perform at least once in his lifetime. This pilgrimage is a very
expensive one but they pool together and and send a representative. A few do not survive the journey.
People welcome all those who return safely the male when they return are given the Honorary title Al-
Hadj while the females are conferred the title Al-Hadjiani.
On the festival day early morning they go to the Mosque pray and come back to read the Mosque pray
and come back to read the Quran and pray to Mohammed. They also distribute mutton and beef to
other neighbors. In the evening they visit their friends and relatives.
RAMZAN FESTIVAL DAY
Ramzan festival is celebrated after 29-30 days fasting depending on sing of the new moon. The festival
is celebrated to mark the conclusion of the fast. Both males and females with prayers for males and
females conducted separately.
The symbolic importance of the nombi can be said that the Muslims exercise discipline to enable
spiritual growth and promotes acquisition of self control over ones appetite and impulses so as to
regulate these in the service of a spiritual ideal.
The fast is a gesture of understanding and appreciation of the pangs of hunger experienced by the
needy and the poor. It shows the equality of man 'brotherhood' revives the culture as well.
The faith gives a high place to cleanliness and hygiene. They consider the human body holy. Having
partaken all kinds of food for 11 months arrest is believed to purify and invigorate the body.
The fast starts at dawn, with a meal called 'Sahar' and the recital of 'Neeiyeth' at the call of the dawn
prayer 'Sabahu'. The fast ends at dusk when the call of the Azan for the 'Maghrib' is recited this is
