President’s Message
Greetings members, old and new, to Ould Newbury,
Your Board of Directors, Committees and Staff have been very busy
this winter preparing for the 2012 golf season. As always, we all
strive to reach that delicate balance between the social and
competitive parts that make up the great game of golf. I am confident
that you will be happy with the results of their hard work.
In order to better address the needs of the club, we have re-defined
committees and their responsibilities. What was formerly the
Tournament Committee will now be responsible for tournaments,
handicaps, and carts / rules. The Marketing Committee will now be
called “Marketing, Membership and Entertainment.”

We anticipate an influx of new members – keep an eye out for them
and welcome them into our golfing family. As we all know, the
strength and success of the club depends on its members and guests.
The golfing industry as a whole has gone through some very difficult
times. We all are hopeful that the bottom has been reached and that
we can now look forward toward better economic times ahead. It is
up to each and every one of us to insure a better future through
solidifying our member base and increasing our numbers.

I want to welcome two new board members and thank those
outgoing members for their contributions and dedication to the club.
Coming on board are Kathleen Schoonmaker and Chris Fraser, two
very talented individuals who bring a wealth of knowledge and new
ideas to the board Special thanks to outgoing members Tony Penski
and Peter Leary for their efforts in keeping the ship afloat during
very tough times. And what can be said about our past president, Ken
Petrucci. His wealth of information on the history of the club, his
hands on personal efforts on the course for more than three decades
and as president for the last two years, Ken has made a significant
impact on what is now the Ould Newbury Golf Club. Good luck to our
new members and thanks to those stepping down.

Jim Hilton returns in his dual role of head professional and manager
of our kitchen. As always, he looks forward to helping all of us with
game improving equipment and swing advice. Now in his second
season as director of food and beverage service, Jim is looking
forward to improving upon the success of last year and providing the
members with new and innovative offerings.

So far the winter has been kind to us and we are optimistic about the
golf course. Our crew, under the leadership of Nathan Walker,
continues striving to make the course a better place to play and
enjoy. Nate is hoping to complete a major renovation of our drainage
system early this spring. Improvements on tees and greens are
nearly complete and will make for more enjoyable golf this season.

One of the traditions of Ould Newbury is the annual clean-up day
which is scheduled for Saturday, March 24th. It is a great time to
reunite with old and new golfing buddies while getting the course in
pristine condition for our tentative opening date which is Sunday,
March 25th. Both, of course, are weather dependent. Mark your
calendars; it is just around the corner!

I look forward to seeing you all,

Rick Modini
President

History
Ould Newbury Golf Club (ONGC), a nine-hole, semi-private club, was
officially opened for play on Labor Day, September 4, 1916.
Under the leadership of Benjamin Pearson, Dr. Charles S. Ingham and
Joseph Dummer, 60 acres of land were leased from The Governor’s
Academy (formerly named Governor Dummer Academy) and in
1915, with a fund of $10,000.00; construction of the golf course
began.

The first officers of Ould Newbury were Rev. Wilfred L. Hoopes,
President; Fred M. Ambrose, Vice President; Henry C. Learned,
Treasurer; and Henry F. Cole, Secretary. A Scottish architect/golfer,
Jim Lowe, under whose direction the course was laid out and built,
was the first professional at Ould Newbury. He was succeeded in
1935 by Peter Moran, who was followed in turn by Ralph Beach, John
MacGregor, John MacDonald, Walt Greus, Alex Burns, and our current
professional, Jim Hilton.

Operation of the Club and Philosophy
The club is operated by members of the Board of Governors, who
chair various committees and oversee the day-to-day function of the
Golf Pro, Course Superintendent, and Clubhouse Manager.

The club officially opens for golf around the second week in April and
closes around November 15th. The public is permitted to play golf on
weekdays, but must play with a member, as a guest, on weekends
and holidays. This privilege is allowed only once per month per
individual.

The basic philosophy of Ould Newbury is to provide as complete and
enjoyable a golfing experience as possible while also trying to
maintain a dues level that encourages membership in the club. We
welcome all golfers and strive to provide activities for all levels of
play.

James Hilton - Golf Pro, Kitchen Operations
As you all know, Jim is our resident professional golfer. He continues
to do an excellent job of providing our members and guests a first

class operation in the pro shop, on the lesson tee and on the golf
course. He remains deeply involved in all aspects of our golf
operations, from sitting on committees, managing club leagues,
overseeing tournaments and providing his golf expertise wherever
needed.

For the second season, Jim Hilton will be continuing in his role as
manager of kitchen operations. Having completed one full successful
season overseeing the food and beverage service for the club, Jim is
looking forward to an even better 2012. Jim and his staff will
continue to work on the food and beverage menu in an effort to
better satisfy the needs of our members and guests. Any and all
suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Nathan Walker - Course Superintendent
Nate Walker continues in his role as golf course superintendent and
facilities manager. Proving over and over that anything and
everything is possible, Nate has made Ould Newbury one of the
premier nine hole golf courses in New England. Having gained the
respect of his fellow superintendents from public and private
courses throughout the area, Nate is forever adding to his knowledge
and skill base by attending pertinent seminars and through his own
personal research.

Ould Newbury is fortunate in having these two professionals on staff!

Marketing, Membership and Entertainment
We are very excited about the re-alignment of committee
responsibilities, especially the combining of Marketing and
Entertainment and the addition of Membership to this committee.
The main goals are to increase membership, retain existing members
and market the club for paying greens fee play. The committee
welcomes input from members and guests on how to make the Ould
Newbury Experience more rewarding.

This year, both the opening party and the closing party will be held
in conjunction with a mixed golf event. These tournaments, even
though competitive are more geared to an afternoon of fun and
laughter. After golf, the party continues in the dining room with
appetizers and a delicious supper and maybe even some light music.

We have scheduled one Grub and Grog for each month. These are
very popular tournaments where members are encouraged to invite
non-member friends to participate in some golf and merriment. It is
also interesting to sign up alone and get put together with people
with whom you have never played. We may experiment with
different formats this year to add some interest. The cost of these
tournaments is kept low covering only the cost of carts, prizes and
refreshments.

Again since the aim of these events is less geared to competition, it is
a perfect opportunity to bring a friend who is new or less skilled with
golf.

Mark your calendar for the Opening Party on May 18 th. See the
tournament schedule for all other events.

Handicaps
Handicaps are now under the direction of the Tournament Committee.

The USGA requires that each golfer turn in a scorecard that is
properly filled out using the ESC (Equitable Stroke Control) System.
It must be properly signed and attested. The only scores exempt
from the handicap system are:

 Any round of golf fewer than 13 holes, although 9-hole
         scores are posted
     Scramble scores
 Tournament scores in which the number of clubs is limited

All other scores must be posted, including match play and Fourball
scores. Members are responsible for posting scores on the MGA
computer system located near the Pro Shop. Members who are
unsure of how to use the USGA Handicap System, or who need
instruction on how to fill out scorecards, should contact a member of
the handicap committee for clarification. Those members are also
invited to ask our PGA Professional who is always available to help.

competitive golf. In addition, all members should feel comfortable
participating in all social activities of the club.

It is therefore the duty and responsibility of all members to conduct
themselves in a manner that is not detrimental to the club. Each
member is asked to remain respectful of his or her fellow member or
competitor at all times. Members are expected to behave in a
manner befitting the game of golf both on and off the course.

Members will treat the staff with proper respect. If a member has an
issue with an employee, he/she should address their concern with
the chairman of the committee responsible for that staff member.

Obscene, profane or abusive language should not be used in
situations that can offend fellow members or competitors.

Throwing clubs or willful damage to the course will not be tolerated.
Any reported incident of club throwing or willful damage to the
course will result in an investigation and if found to be true, the
offending member may receive a written warning depending on the
specifics of the incident and may be disqualified from the day’s event.
Any further infraction subsequent to the written warning may result
in the club revoking his or her membership without refund.

Members should be aware that any act causing physical harm to a
fellow competitor or to the course could result in their personal
liability. In addition, a verified incident of a member causing harm or
injury to a fellow member or guest will result in immediate dismissal
from membership without refund of fees paid.

expect all members to show respect for their fellow members, their
guests and members of the public paying greens fees by abiding by
this rule.
