"Far away there in the sunshine are my highest aspirations. I may not reach
them, but I can look up and see their beauty, believe in them, and try to
follow where they lead."
—Louisa May Alcott
PRESIDENTS’ MESSAGE
Ahhhh, summer is here and with it comes more playful times with friends and
families, books to be read (finally) and hopefully times too for those fantasized
hikes into our hills, horseback rides in surrounding forests, tennis and golf
games... and certainly some extra time for just ourselves…enjoy each day,
relaxing to the hilt or playing hard as Sunriver shines and shines right now.
Bringing your calendar to your hammock, of course, remember to put down these
upcoming dates: the great fun HOMEOWNERS' PICNIC on Thursday, July 23rd
in Mary McCallum Park. We will launch our Sunriver Women's Club year with
our always popular Tea on Friday, September 11th and we are also certain that
you are already thinking about your holiday plans, so please put Thursday,
December 3rd in ink for the 2009 Dinner Dance.
Now, off for that kayak float or picnic with the grandchildren... enjoy, enjoy.
Betty So Simmons and Janie Williams, Co-Presidents
And knowing that you want to be included in the SRWC Directory, please be
certain to remit your 2009-10 membership dues before the end of June (details
below in the Membership message)

THE PICNIC is coming: July 23rd, 5 p.m., Mary McCallum Park near the marina.
Sign up right away at The Sunriver Marketplace, the SROA building entrance, or
at the Chamber of Commerce. An early sign-up is enormously helpful to the
committees. You may also sign-up at dbrannan@chamberscable.com listing
(1)the names of people coming, (2)whether you will bring a side dish, a salad, or
a dessert with 10 to 12 servings in each. Sign-ups can be made until noon on
Monday, July 20th.
Traffic: We plan to have the loading and unloading area again in the traffic
circle. Please carpool if you can. When parking, leave enough space so that
emergency vehicles can get to the park if necessary. We will have a few
handicapped parking places.
Food: Your admission fee ($12.50 for adults and $5 for children ages 6 to 12)
provides the beer, wine, soda, ham, and marinated tri-tip steak. The plates,
cups, plastic wear and music is also provided. Attendees bring a salad, a side
dish, or a dessert for 10 to 12 people. Please bring a serving spoon or fork for
your dish. Remember that the weather is usually fantastic but warm to even hot.
Insulate your salad. Avoid egg or mayonnaise dressings. Avoid ice cream or
whipping cream on the dessert. Please cut your desserts into serving sizes.
Tables: The tables will be washed but bringing a tablecloth for your area is a
good idea.
Drawing: Tickets will be sold for a "Sunriver" treat. Bring some money so you
can have a chance to win! We are not doing a white elephant sale this year.
Enjoy: With the river flowing by, the gentle breeze, the music, the drinks, the
laughs, the people, and the great food, who could not have a great time! Come.
Enjoy.

HEARTY SOLES/SOFT SOLES JULY HIKES
Thursday, July 9th Hearty Soles Black Butte Hike
Co-Leaders are Anita Lohman (593-2171) Please note: A new co-leader is
need for this hike. If you can you help, please contact Anita
Lohman@chamberscable.com right away.
This is a moderately difficult hike up Black Butte Volcano. Though it is an
elevation gain of 1560', the trail climbs at a reasonable grade. The trail is 3.8
miles round trip and takes about 3 hours. Since this is a wildflower enjoyment
hike, it will be leisurely to allow time to enjoy and learn about the wildflowers with
Anita (and you?) as your guides. Plan to spend the day. We will gather at Holy
Trinity at 8 a.m. to carpool. Drivers will need Trail Parking Permit ($3) obtainable
at Sisters Ranger Station or ahead of time. (Golden Eagle Passes may also
work.).
We will hike into old-growth Ponderosa pines, followed by a treeless slope
of serviceberry bushes, yellow balsam root, purple larkspur, and red
paintbrush. Next the path climbs steeply to a broad ridge with wind-stunted
white bark pines. At the top, is a fire lookout from the 1920's
with fabulous views of the Cascades and Smith Rocks.
Bring your lunch, plenty of water, hiking boots, layered clothing, hat, camera,
hiking poles, sunscreen, bug spray, $3 for your driver, extra money for an ice
cream stop in Sisters, and of course a bath size bar of soap for Care and Share.
Black Butte Pre-hike – July 2
Anita Lohman will lead a pre-hike on Thursday July 2 meeting at Holy
Trinity at 8 am to carpool. Husbands and anyone who can't make the July 9th
date are welcome.
Tuesday, July 14 Soft Soles Lucky Lake Hike
Shelley Kempf and Mary Catherine McMurtry will lead this 2.6 mile hike with a .4
mile option to go further around the lake. It is an easy trail with a 447 foot

Creek trail. We will pass several spectacular waterfalls that rival those on the
hike to Green Lakes, as well as many smaller falls. The route back down
crosses through a Bend watershed which is restricted to hikers only (no bikes,
dogs, horses, etc. are allowed). The hike is rated moderate and is 6.8 miles long
with an 1100 foot elevation gain. We will meet at Holy Trinity Church at 8:00 AM
to carpool. Be sure to bring hiking shoes/boots, layered clothing, hat, water,
lunch, sunscreen, insect repellant, and hiking poles if you have them. Also bring
a bath-sized bar of soap for Care and Share and $3 for your driver. For
questions, contact Joan Lewis at jlewis@chamberscable.com.
Tuesday, July 28- Soft Soles Hike to Sparks Lake

additional two times, usually three weeks apart, to get rid of late bloomers. Each
team sets up their own times to weed.
All the proceeds from the project go to SRWC’s charitable fund. If you would like
to volunteer, put together a team with a friend or spouse, or have questions,
please contact Katie Hall at 598-2075 or katieh@chamberscable.com or Deb
Brewer at debjacksonbrewer@gmail.com .
