4) Drug induced ~> Corticosteroids
                ~> Phenothizines
5) Congenital
                Epidemiology
•   Leading cause of blindness
•   40 million people worldwide
•   80% in devevloping countries
•   90% are age related
•   50% between 65-74 years
•   70% between >75years
With appropriate management it is the most
 Rx. cause of visual loss (blindness)
             Eye Examination

1) Visual activity
2) Lens opacities ~> Fundus red reflex
    Good Red Reflex        - No
    Dark spots in R/Reflex - Opacity
    No Red Reflex          - Cataract
3) Measure 10P
4) History of Illness
                  Ix
1) History

2) Ocular exam

3) General exam

4) Hb% UFEME, BUSE, RBS, ECG, CXR
                   Surgery
1)Intracapsular Cataract Extraction. (ICCE)
 - Lens removed with its capsule
2) Extra capsular Cataract Extraction (ECCE)
  - Lens removed leaving part of the capsule
    behind
   ECCE with 10L-most common

Most cases done under LA+Sedation
(Facial Nerve Block)
              Complication
• Bleeding

• Infection

• Damage to cornea
