If you want to ensure a long, happy and healthy life for your dog, you need to make sure you’re
feeding him or her the healthiest food possible. You are what you eat, after all, and this saying
doesn’t just apply to humans. Dogs need a healthy diet with the right combination of fat, protein,
carbohydrates, vitamins and minerals to sustain their active lifestyle. This doesn’t have to be a
difficult or expensive undertaking. Just consider your dog’s needs and make sure you understand
what you’re buying.

Address Your Dog’s Needs First

Here are a few of the factors that you will need to consider in order to choose the right food for
your dog:

 Age and stage in life (puppy, adult or senior)
     Allergies
 Health and weight – Does your dog exercise a lot? Is he/she overweight? Underweight?
 History (past weight issues, injuries, surgeries, etc.)
     Medical conditions
     Your budget
 Your pet’s tastes – Simply put, they aren’t going to eat something they don’t like

Read Ingredients Carefully

It’s important to read the ingredients on the label of any dog food or treats you buy. The
ingredients are listed in order of how much they weigh, with the ingredients taking up the bulk of
the dog food listed first. If you see items such as eggs, fish or meat as the first ingredient, it’s a
good sign. Try to avoid foods that are mostly cheap grains and fillers.

Understand Your Options

There are generally three categories of dog food to choose from: health foods, premium foods
and those you find in the grocery store. Health foods are typically only found in specialty stores or
online, although they are now being sold in pet stores and some veterinarians’ offices, as well.
These foods are often made with organic ingredients and are specially formulated for a balanced
and nutritious diet. Grocery store dog foods are often the cheapest and least nutritious, but there
are some better brands with higher-quality ingredients on the shelves these days, so if you do
your homework, you can find something healthy for your dog here. Some premium foods are
even found in grocery stores these days, although they’re still more common in pet stores and
veterinarian’s offices. When they are in grocery stores, they’re typically among the higher priced
items. It’s just a matter of considering all the factors and deciding what’s most important for you
and your dog.
