Raised Crosswalk Markings
Document Sample

Original Question: The City of Bellevue is interested in finding out what types of pavement markings other
agencies are using to mark raised crosswalks/speed humps. We are particularly interested in seeing what types
of advance pavement markings are used (triangles, legends, stripes, etc.) to alert motorists that they are
approaching a raised crosswalk/speed hump.

Comments: Of a total of about 50 speed bumps in Corvallis, 6 are also raised crosswalks. Each set of speed
bumps are signed at the beginning of the set only (not each bump) whether raised crosswalk or speed bump
only. On speed bumps only we use a painted (or taped)chevron pattern. On the raised crosswalks we have been
using only crosswalk markings. Based on a recent compliant, we are considering adding some type of chevron
pattern to the crosswalk marking so that they are not mistaken for crosswalk only

Comments: We are transitioning to the guidelines set by the new Ohio MUTCD (for this section, I think it is the
same as the federal MUTCD). Our current attitude is to minimally sign/mark the speed humps, and therefore we
don't do advance markings for speed humps. This is due to resident complaints about too many markings
(ugly), but cost may play a small factor. For crosswalks we sign at the crosswalk (with the down arrow) and in
advance (with a distance plaque).
