FAMILY PLANNING Alisa Goldberg, MD, MPH, Director Morana Lasic, MD, Director, Anesthesia DIVISION MEMBERS Robert L. Barbieri, MD Deborah Bartz, MD, MPH Daniela Carusi, MD, MSc Shiao-Yu Lee, MD Ila Dayananda, MD, MPH (Fellow) Melody Hou, MD, MPH (Fellow) MISSION The Family Planning Division carries on a longstanding Brigham and Women’s Hospital (BWH) tradition of respecting women’s health care choices, including reproductive choice. Our mission is to provide family planning services commensurate with the highest standard of care to our diverse patient population in a non-judgmental, caring and supportive environment. We also strive to reduce the frequency of unintended pregnancy and improve access to, and the quality of, pregnancy termination services through research and training. We aim to train a future generation of physicians committed to reproductive choice and who are able to provide the full scope of care. ACCOMPLISHMENTS IN AY 2008-2009 Provided hysteroscopic tubal occlusion, uterine evacuation and contraceptive implants and IUD insertions immediately after uterine aspiration to a diverse patient population. Coordinated pregnancy loss and termination services with high-risk obstetrics, labor and delivery, the OR and anesthesiology through an intradepartmental workgroup of physicians and nurses. Participated in a joint hospital consortium through the Department of Public Health, to address problems of access to services. Held the first family planning simulation training day for OB/GYN residents. FELLOWSHIP TRAINING PROGRAM This was the fourth year that the Division, in partnership with the Planned Parenthood League of Massachusetts, has been a site for the nationally recognized two-year family planning fellowship. The program utilizes the resources of BWH, the Harvard School of Public Health, Planned Parenthood League of Massachusetts and Women’s Health Services. Fellows receive training in comprehensive reproductive health service delivery, conduct clinical research and obtain a Masters in Public Health degree. Fellows also complete an international rotation to gain experience with family planning issues in developing countries. This year our fellow taught evidence-based medicine methods in Vietnam and completed an elective rotation in contraceptive development at the Population Council. GOALS FOR AY 2009-2010 Further enhance curriculum for resident training. Train sufficient numbers of physician leaders to ensure advances in reproductive health care and foster a commitment to academic excellence in this field. Continue to provide a standard of services commensurate with the high quality of all of BWH services. Create a model for a combined Family Planning and Global Women’s Health Fellowship.
