Standard Operating Procedures for Particularly Hazardous Substances
DIMETHYL SULFOXIDE (DMSO)
General handling of Dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO).

#3 PPE - Personal Protective Equipment
Skin and eye protection should be used when working with DMSO. Wear gloves, safety glasses with side
shield and lab coat. Goggles and heavier gloves should be worn if transferring larger quantities.
#4 Engineering/Ventilation Controls
Work with DMSO in a chemical fume hood to avoid inhalation. Use only in an area equipped with a
shower and eyewash.
#5 Special Handling Procedures and Storage Requirements
Read the MSDS prior to use. Keep in a tightly closed container. Separate from oxidizing agents. Use
mechanical pipetting devices. Don not use in Clean Areas. Wash lab bench, glassware and hands
thoroughly after use. Avoid contact with eyes, skin and clothing. Do not breathe vapor. DMSO is readily
absorbed through skin, along with other chemicals mixed with it.
#6 Spill and Accident Procedures
Do not attempt to cleanup if you feel unsure or your ability to do so. Sweep up and absorb incidental
spills, then place waste into suitable container for disposal by EH&S. Other wise notify supervisor.
Eyes: flush with plenty of water for at least 15 minutes.
Skin: wash with soap and plenty of water for at least 15 minutes. Remove contaminated clothing.
Refer to MSDS Section 4: First Aid Measures for additional information regarding exposure via ingestion,
inhalation, eye and skin contact.
Seek medical attention after 1st aid measures, as appropriate.
#7 Waste Disposal
Place an EHS Hazardous Waste label on container. Place in secondary containment. Dispose within 9
months of container start date.
#8 Approval Required
Read and understand MSDS and this SOP prior to first use.
#9 Decontamination Procedures
Wash surfaces thoroughly with soap and water, collect waste into suitable container for disposal by EH&S.
#10 Designated Area
Use fume hood in Rm. ______________.
