     10-S Scene: Sunset Boulevard

Laurel Canyon is the home of many actors, writers, and
musicians. Laurel Canyon is close to Hollywood and Sunset
Boulevard, but is quite different from central Hollywood.

Here is a country store which is similar to those you find in
small towns. You can also stop and have a hamburger below the
market. Laurel Canyon Boulevard is noisy with traffic, but listen,
                    what else do you hear?

Right across from the country store is a cleaners and
laundry. This cleaners has "same day" service. They also repair
shoes. There are many narrow roads that go up into the hills from
Laurel Canyon. They aren't as busy as Laurel Canyon Blvd.,
which is a main road between the San Fernando Valley and West
                    Hollywood.

Look at the houses on top of the hill. What is that in the
sky? It's a plane that is writing a word. What does it spell? C-A-T-
C-H. What does "catch" mean? There are many plants and trees
in the canyon which almost hide the houses.

Sunset Boulevard is one of the most famous streets in the
world. Why? Let's find out. Sunset Blvd. runs from the Old Plaza
in downtown Los Angeles to the beach. Today we are just going
to see a few miles of it, from West Hollywood to Westwood. On
this part of Sunset there is a little bit of everything. There are some
hotels, sidewalk cafes and all types of restaurants, some with
dancing. Sushi is everywhere in L.A., even on the "Strip".

This part of Sunset Boulevard is called the Sunset Strip, or
just "the Strip". If you don't want sushi today, how about a
hamburger or hot dog? They probably serve the best in the world
here. That's what the sign says, anyway.

                                                                                                 35

Billboards are everywhere along Sunset. They advertise
new movies and shows. That is the new Le Mondrian Hotel.
Across from the hotel is the Comedy Store. If you want to laugh,
come here any night of the week.

Going west on Sunset, the street changes a bit. The
restaurants and shops near Sunset Plaza Drive become a bit more
"chic". You can see that we are driving along the western side of
                     the Hollywood Hills.

A little further west the street changes again. Let's take a
short walk and look in some of the windows. Do you like the latest
style? Chinese food, anyone? Do you have enough money to buy
                     this car?

There are always some new restaurants on the "Strip".
Things change quickly here. Nothing stays the same. They are
                     always building something new.

Across from this nightclub is the Roxy, where rock and jazz
musicians play nightly. Don't wait. Get your tickets now! They go
                     fast here.

Gazzarri's is another hot spot. It is the oldest rock club on
the "Strip". They have dancing every night. Gazzarri's has been at
this location for 25 years. Well, let's be on our way. You can
come back to dance later this evening, if you want.

Do you want to see some of the movie stars' houses? You
don't need a map. Just follow me. We are now entering Beverly
Hills, where many movie stars live. Not everyone in Beverly Hills is
a movie star, but many people here lived and still do live like kings.

Let's take a look at one of the most famous mansions in the
area, not far from Sunset Blvd. at Loma Vista and Doheny Road.
Edward L. Doheny, who was an oilman, built this 55-room home in
1923. It is called Greystone because they made the roof of gray
                     stone.

Let's get out of the car and take a look at the view.
Greystone is now a public park open daily from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
There is a fantastic view of the west side of Los Angeles from here.

Down Sunset a little further you must stop, at least for a little
while, at the Beverly Hills Hotel. The hotel sits among 12 acres of
gardens. Notice the banana trees. You may even see some
movie stars here in the Polo Lounge.

If you just want to rest and relax and don't want to spend
any money, push the button, wait for the "WALK" sign, and then
walk across the street to a beautiful little park. This park is at
                    Sunset and Crescent.

It is nice to come here on a warm Sunday afternoon. It's not
as big as Griffith Park, but everyone seems to be enjoying the
flowers, fountains, and sunshine. Little boys are kicking a ball on
the lawn. A family is playing and laughing together.

What do you see in the water? What color are they?
Should we pick some flowers and take them with us? No, we
shouldn't. The flowers are for everyone to enjoy here.

Do we have time to sunbathe? Not if you want to see all of
L.A. You can get some sun at the beach later. Shall we be on our
                    way?

Farther west Sunset goes through the Bel-Air
neighborhood. There are hundreds of mansions in this area
where many film stars and the internationally famous live. The
speed limit on this street is 35 miles per hour. Do you think he's
                    driving faster than 35 MPH?

A bit further west on Sunset at Hilgard is the University of
California, Los Angeles: UCLA. To really see UCLA you have to
get out of your car, or off the bus, and walk through the campus.

UCLA has more than 85 buildings of all shapes, sizes and
styles, acres of grass, trees, and plants from all over the world.
One of the most interesting spots on campus is the Murphy
Sculpture Garden. It's a wonderful place to relax, picnic,
sunbathe, skate, and maybe even study.

Let's take a look at some of the pieces of sculpture. Here's
a piece by Henry Moore. This one's by Maillol. That couple's
sitting next to a Rodin. Do you like this one? Here's a series of

                                                                                                                       37

sculpture by Matisse. Notice how the person changes in each
                     one.

This path goes to the southern part of the campus. There
are over 33,000 students at UCLA, but it's a Sunday and today it
seems almost empty. Even on weekdays, it doesn't seem
crowded because the campus is so big. Let's take a look around.
This is one of the outdoor eating areas. Did you spend all of your
money? It's easy to get some more from the automatic teller here,
                     if you need to.

Are you hungry? We can get something to eat quickly here
at the cafeteria. You can sit either indoors or outdoors. If you are
really in a hurry, you can get something from the machines. There
are sandwiches, candy, milk, and coffee.

This is the oldest part of the campus. These buildings at
the top of the stairs opened in 1929. This is Royce Hall. They
have an excellent concert series here during the school year.
Across from Royce Hall is a brick Romanesque style building
                     which is the College Library.

As you can see, the campus of UCLA is like a large park.
Squirrels run freely, and so do the students. That Gothic style
building is Kerckhoff Hall, which has the student offices and a
                     good coffee house.

What's this? It's a fountain, but it seems to be running
upside down! The water is running into a hole in the middle.
Here's a place to park motorcycles.

There are many schools at the University. This is the Health
Sciences Building. The Schools of Medicine, Dentistry, Nursing,
Public Health, and the UCLA Hospital are in this area. Within the
School of Botany is the Mathias Botanical Gardens, which is on
the southeast end of the campus. Let's rest here for a few minutes
before we go into Westwood Village. Are your legs as tired as
mine? It's time for a little break.

1 Can you count all of the cars in Los Angeles?
                                        No, I can't.
                                  Why not?
                                        Because there are too many.
Can you eat 20 pounds of cheese in a day?
                                        No, I can't.
                                  Why not?
Because that is too much cheese for me to eat.
Can you buy cigarettes when you are 18 years old?
                                        Yes, you can, but ...

2 Is it a good idea to smoke?
No, it isn't. Doctors say that you should not smoke.

Doctors also say that you should get enough rest every day. If
you need to sleep 8 hours a day, you should get 8 hours sleep
                                  every night.

Some people need 8 hours sleep, but they don't get that. They
are usually tired. They should sleep more.

Doctors also say that you should exercise to stay in good
                                  condition and to be healthy.

Should you smoke a lot of cigarettes to stay in good condition?
                                        No, you should not. (shouldn't)
Should you drink a lot of alcohol to stay healthy?
                                        No, you shouldn't.
What should you do to stay in good shape?
                                        You should eat right.
                                        You should exercise.
                                        You should get enough sleep.
                                        You should not smoke.
You can drink, but you shouldn't drink too much.

                                                                                                    47

                             Should you exercise every day?

                             I shouldn't drink too much.
                             You shouldn't eat too much.
He shouldn't smoke. It isn't a good idea for him to smoke.
She shouldn't speak anything except English in class.
That shouldn't bother you. It shouldn't bother you.
We shouldn't forget to write our friends back home.
You shouldn't leave Los Angeles now. There is more to see and
                             do.
They shouldn't go back to Chicago until the winter is finished.

New York is big. San Francisco is big too. They are both big, but
10 they are not exactly the same. They are a bit different. New York
is bigger than San Francisco, but they both have tall buildings.
They are similar to each other because they both have tall
buildings. They are like each other, but not the same. San

Is Chicago similar to New York?
                            Is Chicago like New York?

Yes, it is, because they are both large American cities with
tall buildings. But Chicago is not exactly the same as New York.
They are a bit different. New York is larger than Chicago.

Do you think that Los Angeles is similar to Rome?

Well, they are both big. Both cities have lots of traffic and
lots of people. So, in some ways they are similar, but Rome is
much older than Los Angeles. L.A. isn't as old as Rome. L.A. is
not the same as Rome, but in some ways similar to Rome.

What do you think? Is Rome similar to L.A.?

      10-D Dialog
(Richard, Ann, Joe and Susan are walking along
                                                   Hollywood Boulevard.)

Richard: So this is Hollywood Boulevard.
Ann: Is it different from what you thought?
Richard: Yes, it is. I thought that I was going to see movie
                                                   stars everywhere.
                        Ann: There're the stars.
                        Richard: Where?
                        Ann: On the sidewalk.
                        Joe: Hey, what about me?
Susan: Well, you are an actor, but you're not quite a movie
                                                   star yet.
Joe: Well, I soon will be.

(Joe and Richard walk together. Susan and Ann
                                                   walk together.)

Susan: Richard told me he's going to stay in Los Angeles.
Ann: When did he tell you that?
Susan: A little while ago while we were walking in Ferndell.
Ann: Hmm. How do you feel about that?
                        Susan: I like the idea.
Ann: Doesn't he have a girlfriend in Chicago?
Susan: Yes, he does, but I don't think they're getting along
                                                   very well.
                        Ann: Hmm.

(All are walking together again at the Chinese
                                                   Theater)

Ann: So, I hear you're going to stay in Los Angeles.
Richard: Where did you hear that?

(Ann looks toward Susan. They all smile.)

Richard: Yeah, that's right. I'm staying. I feel good out here.
                        Joe: I thought so.
Ann: That's great! We'll be able to see each other more
                                                   often now.

                                                                                                            59

                                             (Ann hugs Richard)

Richard: Yeah. And you're going to get that dinner I promised
                                             you.
                  Ann: That's right!
Susan: I'm glad you're staying too.

                                             (Susan gives Richard a hug.)

Tourist: May I have your autograph?
                  Joe: Certainly!

                                             (Joe signs his autograph.)

Tourist: Thank you very much. You were great on "Hotel
                                             Fantasy".
                  Joe: Thank you.

                                             (Tourist walks away.)

Joe: What did I tell you? They love me.

                                             (All laugh)

Susan: I'll bet you hired that guy to ask for your autograph.

                                             (All laugh)

Joe: Sure! Actually, that happened one other time, last
year in Santa Monica. A little girl asked me for my
autograph while I was swimming in the ocean.
                  Ann: You're kidding!
Joe: No, I'm not. I was surprised too.
Susan: Well, you're really getting popular now. This is the
second time now in two years.
Ann: And right here at Mann's Chinese Theater, the most
                                             famous theater in Hollywood.

                                             (All laugh)

                  Richard: Congratulations!
Susan: Let's see if Joe's feet fit any of the movie star's
                                             footprints.
Ann: Look. Here's Clark Gable's. Let's see if your feet are
                                             bigger than his.
                  Joe: I'm sure they are.

(Joe puts his feet in Gable's footprints.)

Ann: Your feet are bigger than his!
                 Susan: Big deal!
Ann: Richard, you try it now.
Richard: No, that's O.K. So what if my feet are bigger or
smaller than Clark Gable's? What difference does
                                            that make, anyway?
Ann: Oh come on, Richard. Let's see just for the fun of it.
Susan: Yeah, let's see. I want to see too.
                 Joe: So do I.
                 Richard: O.K. I'll do it.

(He puts his feet in Gable's footprints.)

Richard: Are you all happy now?

(All laugh. They leave the theater area and go back
                                            onto Hollywood Blvd.)

Susan: The sun is going to go down soon. Why don't we go
to the Observatory for the sunset?
Ann: Yeah. That'll be nice and romantic.

(Joe looks at Ann with a question on his face. All get
                                            in the car.)

Ann: Do you know what part of L.A. you want to live in,
                                            Richard?
Richard: No, I don't. Where do you think that I should live?
Ann: That's up to you. You decide.
Richard: Well, of course I'll decide, but can you guys give me
some ideas where it's nice to live?
Susan: That depends on what kind of environment you like.
Joe: Like we said, it's cooler near the beach, but more
expensive to rent there. You are going to rent, aren't
                                            you?
Richard: Yes, I am. I don't have enough money for a house,
                                            that's for sure.
Joe: Do you know how much rent is in Los Angeles?
                 Richard: No, I don't.
Joe: Again, it depends on the neighborhood. It can be
                                            anywhere from $250 to $2000 a month.

                                                                                                     61

Richard: $2000 a month! You're kidding! Are you talking
                                             about a house?
Joe: No, I'm not. That's for apartments.
Richard: Two thousand dollars a month. I can't believe that!
Ann: Well, that's if you want to live in Beverly Hills.
Richard: I wasn't thinking of Beverly Hills.
Susan: What about the mid-Wilshire area. It isn't as
expensive as Beverly Hills, but it's still very nice.
Ann: Yeah. It's close to everything in L.A. and there are a
                                             lot of services nearby.
Richard: O.K. I'll begin looking in that area? Ann, are you
                                             free tomorrow to help me?
Ann: No, I'm sorry, I can't. I have to work tomorrow.
Richard: Tomorrow? It's Sunday, isn't it?
Ann: Yes, it is, but I have to work all day tomorrow. When
you have your own business, sometimes you even
                                             have to work on Sundays.
Joe: You have your own business?
                  Ann: Yes, I do.
                  Joe: What do you do?
Ann: I have a bookkeeping service.
Joe: How many clients do you have?
                  Ann: Over 25 now.
Richard: Don't you think that you should hire somebody else
                                             to help you?
Ann: Who(m) do you have in mind?
Richard: Well...I'm going to need a job out here in California.
Ann: I'll keep you in mind.

                                             (All laugh)

Susan: Richard, I'll help you look around for an apartment.
I've got some time tomorrow morning.
                  Richard: Are you sure?
Susan: Yeah, I'm sure, don't worry about it.
                  Richard: Thank you.
Joe: You're going to need a car here, Richard. The public
transportation isn't as good here as it is in Chicago.
You have to have a car here.
Richard: Yes, I know. Do you know anybody who wants to
                                             sell his car?
Joe: No, I don't. I just sold my old car two weeks ago.
                                             Too bad.

Ann: I don't know anybody either.
                 Susan: Neither do I.
Joe: Well, I have some time tomorrow afternoon. I can
take you to some car lots.
Richard: We should go to used car lots. I don't have enough
money to spend on a new car.
Joe: Fine. I know of a couple good ones downtown.
Richard: So, let's see, when can you pick me up tomorrow,
                                            Susan?
Susan: How 'bout 8:30? We can eat breakfast before we
                                            start looking.
                 Richard: Fine.
Joe: Where should I meet you, Richard, in the afternoon?
Richard: Susan, can you drop me off at Joe's place when
                                            we're through?
Susan: Sure. If you want, I can go with you two.
Remember, I know quite a bit about cars.
Richard: That's right. You change your oil, don't you?
Ann: I'm sure Susan knows as much about cars as
                                            Richard does, maybe more.
Susan: O.K., O.K. I didn't want to start an argument again.
Ann: Well, let's get going. It's getting dark.

(Susan starts the car and drives to the Observatory.
                                            She parks the car.)

Richard: Where can we get a good view of the city?
                 Susan: Follow me.

(Richard and Susan walk up the stairs to the
Observatory. Ann and Joe follow close behind
                                            them.)

Richard: Look at the lights! They go on forever!
Susan: What's that fragrance that I smell?
Richard: It smells like pine trees to me.
Susan: No, I don't think so. Are you wearing cologne?
                 Richard: Yes, a little.

(Susan moves closer to Richard to smell his
                                            cologne.)

                 Susan: Yes, that's it.

                                                                                                   63

Ann: So, Richard's staying in L.A.
                  Joe: Yeah.
Ann: You don't seem all that happy about it.
Joe: What do you mean? I think it's fine if that's what he
                                             wants to do.
Ann: Well, he does. He and Susan are getting along quite
                                             well, aren't they?
                  Joe: Well, sort of.
Ann: What do you mean, "sort of"? Susan can't do
                                             enough for Richard.
Joe: That's right, but who does Richard talk to when he
                                             has questions?
                  Ann: Who?
Joe: You know. Remember yesterday in the car when he
                                             asked you that question?
                  Ann: Which question?
Joe: Richard asked you, "Ann, should I stay in Los
                                             Angeles?"
Ann: He was asking all of us that question, wasn't he?
Joe: I don't think so. He was asking you.
Ann: Wait a minute. Who does Richard spend more time
with? Who is he with right now?
                  Joe: Susan.

                                             (Joe looks a little sad.)

Ann: What's wrong? Joe, do you still feel something for
                                             Susan?
                  Joe: Well,...

                  Susan: What's the matter?
Richard: I think I lost my wallet.
Susan: No, you didn't. Here it is.
                  Richard: Thank God!
Susan: I kept it for you in my purse. Remember, you gave it
to me earlier. I guess you forgot about it.

(Richard gives Susan a little kiss.)

(Richard and Susan move closer to Ann and Joe.
They are all enjoying the city lights below them.)
