RECRUITMENT INITIATIVES TYPE OF RECRUITMENT INITIATIVE (MENU SELECTION) BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF ACTIVITY 1 Internship Program (#5) WBIR’s commitment and dedication to educating future journalists includes reaching out to college students through our internship program. We offered 25 student internships during the period in the areas of News, Production, Promotion and Sales. The student earns academic credit for their participation in the program. Students in the program were from the following universities/colleges: The University of Tennessee, Middle Tennessee State University, Mars Hill University and Colorado State University. Selection is based on a formal interview, followed by orientation. Internships last one semester. Information about our program is disseminated in a variety of ways, including our station website, community organizations, job fairs, and college and university guidance offices. 2 Participation in events sponsored by organizations representing groups present in the community interested in broadcast employment issues. (#4) The Marketing Director lectured and facilitated discussion in upper level broadcast management classes twice per semester (Spring and Fall 2008) at the University of Tennessee. 120 plus students had the opportunity to learn about marketing, promotion and careers in television. The General Sales Manager spoke to a Communications class at the University of Tennessee regarding diversity in the workplace and internship opportunities at the television station. This two hour class was held in February 2009 and 35 students participated. On December 8 and 10, 2008 the Marketing Director served on a faculty advisory panel to critique graduating business/marketing student presentations at Pellissippi State College The Information Center staff hosted students from the University of Tennessee Video Production class at the television station on September 25, November 7, and November 11, 2008. Students participated in a hands-on tour of the information center processes. Class size is 30 for a total of 90 students who came through the television station during the reporting period. During the reporting period, the Human Resources Manager served on the Business Advisory Board at Pellissippi State Community College. Work was conducted reviewing current and proposed curriculum for students in broadcast, business and video production study paths. The board meets twice a year in April and September. In Fall 2008 the station partnered with Jefferson County High providing support to their service learning and career exploration program. As part of the curriculum a DTV outreach program was started. The station provided DTV educational information for distribution and technical training by the Director of Operations & Technology. The students were both introduced to careers in broadcasting, and became DTV media experts. The class then disseminated DTV information into their community with an emphasis placed on senior adult programs and facilities. The Community Relations/Niche Web Producer taught classes at Pellissippi State College in Television Studio Production. There were 30 students per class. Classes were taught over 3 semesters between April 2008 and March 2009. During the reporting period, speaking support regarding broadcast careers, meteorology, and journalism was provided on a regular basis by the Information Center on air talent and staff to students at the local elementary, middle and high schools. Class sizes ranged from 18- 400. On February 24, 2009 Human Resources and Community Relations/Marketing staff participated in the School for Success Career Fair. Knox County students were given the opportunity to explore future broadcast job options and ask questions about broadcast TV. This career fair is for high school students and their parents. The event is designed to help students make decisions regarding high school and college study paths. Over 1400 participants attended this event. In concert with this job fair, WBIR hosted a two day program in May 2008 designed to give 8 students a hands on experience at the station. Selection of students was determined by the Knox County school system. In December 2008 the Community Relations/Marketing Department along with Human Resources, worked with the Media Technology department at Central High School. Station employees from the Operations Department worked with school staff to update video equipment at the school. The station helped facilitate acquisition of a teleprompter and digital animation software for the student Television Broadcast Club. The students worked closely with station employees to shoot the annual student Christmas holiday musical. The final product was aired on the station during the holidays. The students had the opportunity to gain “hands on” experience of live television production from start to finish. There were 15 participants. 3 Training programs established to develop station personnel for future higher level opportunities. (#8) WBIR encourages employees to participate in skills training programs that could help lead to advancement within the industry. In September 2008 an executive producer and technical operations manager traveled to WLTX for a job shadowing experience in the Information Center. Departmental management techniques, workflow and processes were shared. November 2008: AdTech Online Ad Sales Workshop (1); SuccessFactor Employee Performance Appraisal Training (7). December 2008: Customer centric sales training (12); Online Comment Moderating (15). Seven employees are participating in a nine month (February -October, 2009) Gannett mentoring program which paired groups of managers in mentor/mentee relationships across geographic regions. The formal mentoring program is designed to provide an opportunity for experienced managers to interact with midlevel managers providing a safe haven for career and personal counsel in business. The Director of Technology, General Sales Manager and Accounting Manger are serving as mentors. The Managing Editor and Digital Sales Manager are participating as mentees in the program. The Human Resources Manager is serving as a regional coordinator for the program. WBIR offers a tuition assistance program designed to encourage self-development through undergraduate or graduate course work. Three employees participated in this program during the reporting period taking classes in business, sales and video production. 4 Participate in Job Fairs (#1) April 17, 2008 – Human Resources Manager participated in Heart of Knoxville Career Expo Employment Festival presented by Tennessee Career Center and the Hispanic Chamber of East Tennessee. Materials on job openings, careers in broadcasting and internship opportunities were available. This career fair is part of Knoxville’s Empowerment Zone project. Approximately 75 job seekers participated. October 22, 2008 - A job fair was held at the University of Tennessee for the College of Communication and Information. The Human Resources Manager attended and provided materials on job openings and internship opportunities at WBIR. Approximately 450 students participated. March 4, 2009 – The Human Resources Manager and Community Relations Producer attended a job fair at Pellissippi State College. Job openings, internship opportunities, and information about careers in broadcasting were presented. Over 100 students attended this event. 5 Other Station Efforts – Encourage individuals to join the broadcast journalism industry. (#16) The WBIR Information Center Coordinator conducts station tours bi-weekly to inform the community of our operations and to offer students the opportunity to learn more about jobs in broadcast journalism. During the reporting period 14 tours focusing on job opportunity in the broadcast industry were conducted with approximately 20 participants in each group. Groups came from local schools and organizations such as: Clinton High Media class; Moreland Heights Media class; Leadership Anderson County: UT Journalism & Electronic Media class; Alcoa High TV Technology class; Lenoir City High Marketing Education class; UT Broadcast News class; Stone Memorial High MultiMedia class; Powell Valley Middle Beta Club; Leadership McMinn County. EEO training - Management Refresher was presented for 16 supervisors in May 2008. Fair and equal treatment in staff management and hiring practices was presented by the HR Department. 6 Provide training to management level personnel as to methods of ensuring equal employment opportunity and preventing discrimination.
