Why Collaborate?

 Student Learning (Information Literacy)
 Information Power
     Collaboration, Leadership, & Technology
 Show-Me Connection Study
 11% impact on MAP scores
 Self-preservation

                                            and finally…

                                                           4
Why Collaborate?

You see, I don't believe that libraries
should be drab places where people
sit in silence, and that's been the main
reason for our policy of employing wild
  animals as librarians.
  — Monty Python skit

                                             5
Roadblocks to Collaboration

 Time
 Administrators
 Teachers
 Not Everything Is on the Internet
 The Needle (Your Search) in the Haystack (the
        Web)
     Quality Control Doesn’t Exist
     Aren’t There Library-less Universities Now?
 The Internet: A Mile Wide, an Inch (or Less)
        Deep
                                                        6
Misconceptions: We are here for more
than just answering questions

 Why is abbreviated such a long word?
 Is there another word for synonym?
 Why isn't phonetic spelled the way it
    sounds?
 Why does monosyllabic have five syllables?
 If it's zero degrees outside today and it's
supposed to be twice as cold tomorrow, how
cold is it going to be?

                                              7
Levels of Collaboration (brief)

 No Involvement
 Initial
 Moderate
 In-Depth

Who to Seek Out?

 The Innovator
Ready and eager to work with you and try new
things without any evidence that it will be effective

 The Middle Adopter
Will try an idea after seeing others try it first

 The Late Adopter
Will not try anything different unless forced to do so
against their will, often making the process difficult if
    not unbearable

                                                                11
Gathering Information

 LIS 5712: Integration and Utilization
 12 students, most of whom are or have
been teachers, many also with library
    experience
 Read and discussed ideas on collaboration
 Created own lesson plans
 Sought out practicing school librarians to
find out what they are doing

                                                 12
