The Future of Magazines in a Web 2.0 world
A white paper by Kapil Sood
Abstract
Faced with the challenges of rising costs and declining circulation, magazine publishers are also struggling to establish an online audience in a Web 2.0 driven world. Though the internet, and its new avatar of Web 2.0, is a threat to traditional print publishing, it can be innovatively used to engage readers online. Publishers can use the concepts of Web 2.0 to provide rich content, introduce interactivity with readers, drive revenues through monetizing of content and build strong online brands to attract and retain both online and print readers. This paper attempts to identify a go-to-market model to guide publishers in a path to adoption of Web 2.0 by magazine publishers. The go-to-market model identifies the synergies between the strengths of existing print businesses and online opportunities created by Web 2.0 that can play a role in building a magazine’s online brand, increasing its readership and generating revenues.
