                                     procedures.

5. General Course Objectives

   Develops skills in Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW) of ferrous metals in the
   flat and horizontal positions. Requires safe care and use of hand and power tools
   in practical applications in the shop.

   Upon completion of this course the student will be able to:

   a. identify arc welding equipment components
   b. describe safety procedures
   c. explain the SMAW process
   d. list potential welding hazards
   e. define AWS electrode classification system
   f. explain and demonstrate electrode storage procedures
   g. determine correct polarity
   h. perform SMAW equipment safety inspection
   i. operate SMAW equipment
   j. select proper electrode
   k. perform flat fillet welds
   l. perform flat groove welds
   m. perform horizontal fillet welds
   n. perform horizontal groove welds

10. Methods of Instruction

   Instruction is self paced: utilizes written and reading exercises, video supported
   demonstrations, live demonstrations, hands-on project work, and individual and
