Time frame and duration From January 31st. to March 7th. 2011
Stage 1: Integrate significant concept, area of interaction and unit question
Area of interaction focus Significant concept(s)
Which area of interaction will be our focus? What are the big ideas? What do we want our
Why have we chosen this? students to retain for years into the future?
Human Ingenuity Communication through symbols and icons is
all around us.
How can I express myself with the use of
technology? Interpretation and construction of symbols
and icons is an essential 21 century skill.
MYP unit question
How can we accurately express who we are
through digital symbols?
What task(s) will allow students the opportunity to respond to the unit question?
Tasks to respond to the question & demonstrate evidence of understanding:
design and create a personal icon to express their identity through digital symbols, using vector digital
illustration software (InkScape)
keep evidence of all the work and process made in their Design Cycle folder
We live in a visual literate society where we read symbols and icons every day in signage, media, and advertising.

What is the problem? How is this problem relevant to Technology? Why is
important in life?
I need to design logos to reflect myself. We need technology to make the logo. If you ever
need to make a logo for your company you need to know how to do it.
We will use the design cycle and inkscape or a design making website/program.
Questions to research about the problem.
1. Who am I? (add your self-analysis from “Activity:Part1”)
a. What is my story? I was born in St. Lucia. My parents divorced when I was
little and then my mum and I moved into a house close to one of our hotels.
Then when I was 7 we moved to Barbados.

e. What is my path? To find a nice place to live and a good job.
f. What are my strengths? I am creative and I like to try new things.

Your personal logo is a logo you use to express yourself.

experts, manuals, online tutorials) that you used to answer your questions.

I am going to design and make a personal logo that has something to do with animals

3. Design and explain a test you will use in order to evaluate your finished product
based on your Design Brief & Specifications.
I will ask other people if they understand it and I will then list down things
about myself and if I can find a connection between them and my logo. I will
ask questions like:
Do you feel it captures me as a person? How? It had graphics.
1. Yes, because the way I made my own little bird thing shows that I’m smart at
2. I think it captures your boldness and freedom.
3. Not really.
4. Just because it’s a tropical bird and you kinda like from a tropical place.
5. Yep. Because it just remind me of you. Maybe because it says your name.
Do you think the use of shapes and colours was good? 1.Yes. 2.Yes visual balance. 3.
Yes but a little simple. 4. Yes because of the shading. 5. Yes because you used warm
Would you recommend me to use it if I owned a company or website, Why? Its good
Yeh because, it actually kinda good at it.
What would you rate it out of 10? 1) 9.5 2) 10. 3) 7. 4) 8.5. 5) 9.
Do you understand what I am trying to achieve with my logo? 1) I guess so.
2) Yeah because I’m free and don’t let people boss me around. 3) Yes, I think. 4) I
suppose so, just a freedom and still bold look right? 5) I think so. Its just about
things you like and reflect you.

Select one design and explain why and how that solution meets the specifications.
I think both of them meet my design specifications but I think I will choose the
simpler one with the bird. It was faster to make but not easier. I think I like them
both but the simpler one shows my love for animals.
Plan the product/solution:
Lists in detail the logical steps necessary to complete your design considering time and
Steps Resources Time (hrs.)
1. Find out who you are. Ask yourself questions. 15 mins
2. Think about symbolism. And what symbols you will use. 10 mins
3. Sketch out a few designs. Paper and 20 mins
4. Create a few designs. Laptop 5 hours
5. Modify the designs. Laptop 1 hour
6. Select one as final product.
7.Print the design. Printer, Paper
8.Apply the questions to the audience.
9. Change to the feedback.
10. Print Final.
11. Create a nice frame and present.
Use appropriate techniques and equipment competently
follow the plan
Create a product/solution of appropriate quality
Add photos of your product here (at least 8 photos). Take
photos at the beginning and the end of each work session.
To create the logo above, I firstly created a vector background, and used a
pre-made image or the bird. I added more detail to the beak, feet and eyes.
Then I got the lettering and created second layer of a vector background
then merged the two layers.
Create writing and then add swirls from a brush pack. Once you finished adding
swirls select them all (just the swirl layers) and merge them. One layer for the text and
another one for the frilly bits. Add another layer and fill it with the white. The result is
quite good already.
Add another layer and, with the Gradient Tool, create a new gradient using Radial for the
Type and Black and a dark grey for the color. Fill the layer with the gradient like the image
below. Right after that, move the layer so it will be beneath the other layers.
To fill the text with a gradient color is very simple. Create a new layer right on top of the
Text layer, and then fill this layer with a gradient using the Gradient Tool. I used the
With the rainbow layer selected Create Clipping Mask.
Answer all the questions below in as much detail as you can. You are being assessed on your ability
to reflect upon the entire design cycle and your participation and experience in the group invention
Evaluate the product/solution
1.Take a look at the specifications that you wrote in the Investigate stage. Evaluate what your actual
product/solution looks like now by comparing it to your original drawings & plans.
1. Are you happy with the outcome? Explain in detail
Yes. It reflects me in many ways, from my favorite colors, to my love for animals and also
how I chose the text and the symbolic meaning of the bird and also how I picked a more
2. Did anything change? What changed? Why did it change?
Just the bird and some colors. Even from the sketch the first bird did not look right so I
picked the Toucan.
3. Was something left out from the original plan? Why?
Nothing way left out.
4. Is there anything you would change about your final product (invention) if you had more
time or could rewind and do things over? What and why?
Maybe just do many silhouettes of bird going across my full name. I think it would just
add more detail.
2. Apply the test defined in the “Investigate stage” and write the results here:
I wrote them up there, I numbered them though.
Evaluate your use of the design cycle
1. Explain how you did during each stage of the Design cycle. (Apply deep
analysis and reflection)
I looked at symbols and tried to figure out which ones reflected me the most.
Also what text symbolized me.
I took a while to design, just because I had so many ideas, but they all ended
up looking somewhat the same.
I planned everything and followed through with almost every plan. I think the
planning stage was a strong point in my work.
I probably enjoyed the creating part the most just because there are so
many different ways you can get an effect that really compliments your idea.
2.What are 5 things you learned from this project?
1. How to use multiple different medias or networks.
2. How to layer things on pixelmator.
3. I found out more about myself I think.
4. How to research things without using the internet and by using opinions.
5. How to modify things when they go wrong and problem-solving techniques.
3.How would you rate your performance and involvement?
Rarely Sometimes Often Always
I participated fully and contributed to each step of the design cycle
INVESTIGATE: Brainstorming Ideas; Asking Questions; Writing
the Design Brief
DESIGN: Sketching /Drawing out ideas; All according to Design
PLAN: Specifying & preparing materials & tools; Identifying Steps
CREATE: Working diligently; Use tools appropriately.
EVALUATE: Identify parts that need improvement; Come up with
solutions to change, make better.
I used my time wisely in class. I did not need reminders from the teacher to
get to work.
I worked cooperatively, helped, communicated and offered ideas and
I worked safely & responsibly with tools provided, following instructions.
I gave the best effort I am capable of in each class.
