JOB DESCRIPTION
Job Title: Apprentice ICT Technician
School: St Mary’s Catholic Combined School
Salary Grade: National Apprenticeship Scheme
Responsible to: HLTA (ICT Systems Management)
Note: It is accepted that as this is an apprenticeship post that the post holder will be
building up the skills essential to fulfil the full responsibilities of this job. The post holder
will be expected to attend The College one day each week and to complete all associated
learning activities and assessments.
Main Job Purpose
1) Provide basic ICT support within the school and support aims, ethos and systems of
the school.
Main Responsibilities and Duties
1) Undertake frontline maintenance to ensure effective operation of ICT equipment for
example:
a. Check printers and refill printer toners and paper as required.
b. Check and if necessary adjust monitor settings each day, and clean monitors
and keyboards.
c. Boot systems and pre-load software before lessons as required.
d. Undertake PAT testing of all ICT equipment (appropriate training to be
provided if required).
e. Respond to general queries and ICT problems within the school, e.g.
problems with data projectors, laptops.
2) Unpack and install – for example:
a. ICT equipment such as new computers and peripherals, and enter all new
equipment into an inventory file.
b. Install new software onto desktops. Customise desktops and software
configuration.
c. Configure other items of equipment.
d. Ensure equipment is security marked.
3) Security – for example:
a. Assist in looking after multimedia equipment e.g. white boards, data
projectors, digital cameras etc.

4) Management & Curriculum support – for example:
a. Undertake routine data entry and data preparation activities
b. As required support teaching and learning activities.
5) Help maintain the school website.
6) Consult and agree work priorities and the time required. Keep under review,
highlighting when agreed deadlines might be missed.
7) Undertake such other duties as may be required from time to time commensurate
with the level of the post. The particular duties and responsibilities attached to the
post may vary from time to time without changing the general character of the duties
or the level of responsibility entailed.
8) Comply with all decisions, policies and standing orders of the school and the Borough
of Poole; comply with any relevant statutory requirements, including Equal
Opportunities legislation, the Health and Safety at Work Act and the Data Protection
Act.
9) Have a commitment to Child Safeguarding, to promoting the welfare of children and
young people in accordance with the school’s agreed procedure, and to meeting the
five outcomes of Every Child Matters.
Supervision and Management of People
1) No supervisory responsibility.
Knowledge and Skills
1) A basic ICT knowledge, together with good organisational and interpersonal skills.

1) Work within ICT use and operating guidelines to solve software and hardware
failures.
2) Resolve routine technical problems.
Contacts and Relationships
1) Daily contact with members of staff and pupils to give advice and/or guidance on
operation of ICT equipment and software.
2) Establish and sustain effective relationships with staff and pupils.
Decisions
1) Give advice and support to staff, pupils and other users of software and hardware.
2) Resolve basic technical faults.

Resources
1) Limited personal responsibility for ICT hardware, software and peripherals.
Work Environment
1) Work within computer suites, which at times may be subject to high temperature
levels due to hardware operation.
2) Frequent use of ICT equipment (plus regular lifting etc); also work in restricted areas
and some need to work at height on ladders.
