                                          Your Professional Behavior

Behaving professionally is part of your career education at Johnson & Wales University, especially during Experiential
Education. You are expected to subscribe to the code of behavior that industry demands: to convey an impression of maturity
and savvy, reflecting the inherent discipline of a capable hospitality professional.

From College Style to Professional Style
Believe it or not, impressions are usually formed within the first 20 seconds of meeting someone. Impressions are based on
visual (55%) and verbal (45%) cues. Making a positive first impression takes thoughtful preparation. First impressions may be
formed during telephone conversations, interviews or introductory meetings. In the professional world, certain standards
must be adhered to in order to create a positive impression. No matter what the workplace environment, to be treated at a
professional, you must present yourself as one.

Starting Off Right
Prior to your first day on the job, show up for any scheduled meeting with the Human Resource Department. Come prepared
to fill out forms (have identification, social security number, and your driver’s license) and be to take a drug test. Complete
personnel paperwork, attend an orientation session, tour the facility, and meet management. Ask for a copy of the employee
handbook.

Within five days of beginning work, take the initiative to schedule a meeting with your direct supervisor to accomplish some of
the following:

        1. Review co-op expectations/goals
        2. Revise your professional objectives
        3. Learn your supervisor’s expectations
        4. Ask any questions about job responsibilities, training schedule, where you fit in
        5. Review with your supervisor all program-specific co-op manual requirements
        6. Discuss your supervisor’s ideal Report/Project topic
        7. Find out the procedure for handling lateness and absences. Whom should you call, and by when?
        8. Find out who will be evaluating your performance and what measurements will be applied.
        9. Establish a good communication system with your supervisor: take notes, listen attentively, ask questions if you
            do not understand something.
        10. Ask questions about the locations of the appropriate rest rooms, times and duration of breaks, lunch hours,
policies on smoking, and parking areas, use of phone for personal calls.
        11. Smile! Make sure to greet everyone you encounter—you are making a first impression.

                                                         Grading

Grades are determined as follows:
On-Site Eval, Goals, etc. 10% (These should be emailed by the due date; late papers in this category
will lose a ½ point each day late after 3 business days.)
Mid-term Evaluation 20% (Emailed by supervisor or faxed with original signature.)
Final Evaluation 30% (Emailed by supervisor or faxed with original signature.)
Final Report 40% (Hard copy only; mailed or submitted in person to CDO.)

Midterm and Final Evals, and Final Report: Three business days after the due date, a 2.5 point deduction will be incurred
for each business day the assignment is late. It is your responsibility to pass along the midterm and final evaluations to your
supervisor, inform them of the due date, and remind them of the importance of turning these in on time. This requires follow-
up and diligence! If a supervisor is out of town and was not able to complete the form before leaving, another supervisory-
level employee at the site should complete the form for you.

                                                                                                                               3
                                              Evaluation & Feedback

At work, your success depends on how your performance is perceived. Ongoing feedback and evaluation are critical to your
success. To ensure a successful dialogue with your supervisor, seek them out (being persistent but not overbearing!) and let
them know that you are just checking to make sure you are on the right track.

Your company supervisor is required to submit the following evaluation forms to your Experiential Education coordinator
according to their due date.
     Midterm Evaluation
     Final Evaluation
     Report/Project Evaluation

                                             Final Report Guidelines

The Experiential Education Project is the ultimate tangible outcome of the Experiential Education Programs. Above and
beyond the day-to-day work involved in the Co-op, each student is required to complete a project or task, which
exemplifies the culmination of his or her educational experience at Johnson & Wales.

Developing an Industry Task/Project
Students work with their host Site Supervisor to develop a practical, professional project/task that will in some way bring
value to the host organization by addressing a problem, completing a task or conducting targeted research. Students are
responsible to complete the written portion of this task on their own time, but with appropriate resources from the host
organization. It is acceptable for a host organization to allow a student to work on the project during scheduled work hours.

Working with a Faculty Advisor
On behalf of the University, a Faculty Advisor approves the topic and content of the written report, assesses the final
submission, and assigns a grade to the report. The report is worth 40% of the final grade.

Project Information
As a wide range of host organizations participate in the Experiential Education Programs, the types of projects vary greatly.
The theme that is common with all projects is the practical nature of the problem, task or research being addressed.
Experiential Education projects should enable students to utilize their knowledge of an industry or profession gained through
their academic studies, as well as individual areas of performance strength, experience and interest. Host sites often have
projects that need attention, and Site Supervisors are glad to have an individual who can dedicate their time to completing
them.

While certain components of the written report will be the same for all students, the central content of the report may be
individually defined by a student’s faculty advisor and role with the Co-op Host Company. Students and their faculty
advisors will determine together, in the early weeks of the term, the exact nature of the written report to be submitted during
week 9 of the term. Unless otherwise instructed, all students are to follow the Final Report Grading Rubric, and should
include ALL components listed.

Three business days after the due date, a 2.5 point deduction will be incurred for each
business day the assignment is late, with a maximum of 40 points deducted. 2 weeks after the term,
reports will not be accepted, and a grade of zero will be recorded. THERE ARE NO EXCEPTIONS TO THIS POLICY.
