                                              Be Well
Greetings… We have several special occasions to celebrate in the next 6 weeks or so: Mother’s Day,
Father’s Day, and Graduation, so it’s time for a special: When you buy a Gift Certificate for one of
these occasions, you may book an appointment in May or June for yourself at half price. Example:
buy a GC for your parent or spouse for a 60 minute massage and book your next 60 minute massage in
May or June and receive it at half the normal price. It’s my way of showing my appreciation for you
and helping you give the gift of massage to those you love. The certificates you give as gifts do not
expire. The discounted massage sessions for you must be booked and used in May or June. Give the
gift of health and Mom or Dad won’t have another item to dust!

For your health… In April I completed a journey that began in earnest in October of 2008 when I took
my first Reiki class. Now I have earned the designation of Reiki Master Practitioner. I first learned of
Reiki (ray-key) while in massage school. Several of my classmates and new friends were experienced
in Reiki and told me about it. On a simple level, Rei means universal. Used in the work Reiki, Rei
means higher knowledge or spiritual consciousness. Ki is Japanese for life energy, which is the same
as Chi/China, Prana/India, and Ti or Ki/Hawaii. “As long as something is alive, it has life energy
circulating through it and surrounding it; when it dies, the life energy departs. If your life energy is
low, or if there is a restriction in its flow, you are more vulnerable to illness. When it is high, and
flowing freely, you are less likely to get sick. Life energy plays an important role in everything we
do.” says William Lee Rand in Reiki, The Healing Touch. This feeling of energy is no mystery to us.
We all know some days we feel very alive with energy, and other days our energy is low. This is life
energy, and it is everywhere. Like the wind, we cannot see it directly, but we can see and feel the
effects of it.
The history of Reiki is written slightly differently in each book I have read, so a general
summary would go something like this: Reiki is a 3000 year old tradition of healing, brought to
current day awareness by Dr. Mikao Usui (8/15/1865 – 3/9/1926) after he became spiritually awakened
when he acquired the Reiki cure at the conclusion of a 21-day fast and meditation on Mt. Kurama in
1914. Dr. Usui is considered the founder of Reiki healing. Already a healer, Usui recognized Reiki as
a tremendous gift because it worked so well in helping others and at the same time did not deplete his
own energy. He taught Reiki and shared his healing ability extensively. Dr. Usui suffered a stroke
while teaching and died in 1926. Mrs. Hawayo Takata, who studied Reiki with Dr. Chujiro Hayashi, a
direct student of Dr. Usui, brought Reiki from Japan to the West in 1938. Anyone can be attuned to
use Reiki and it is easy to learn. All the practitioner needs to do is place their hands on the person with
the intention of healing.
“Reiki has its own intelligence and knows exactly where to go and what to do,” says Rand.
“Because Reiki is guided by God-Consciousness, it can never do harm. It always knows what a person
needs and will adjust itself to create an effect that is appropriate. One never need worry about whether
to give Reiki or not. It is always helpful.”
“The Reiki power naturally finds its own paths, precisely where it is needed,” say Dr. Kikao
Usui and Frank Arjava Petter in The Original Reiki Handbook of Dr. Mikao Usui. I have realized that
Reiki is not as mysterious as I originally thought, though it is not always understood. It is God’s
compassionate unconditional healing love. I believe that universal life energy/God/Buddha are all the
same, just different words and ways of understanding. I am not the source of the healing energy but I
am a channel for it. We all have the ability to affect others around us in a positive manner when we
speak and act kindly toward them, or negatively when we speak and act with anger and cruelty. Why
is the result different? Because of the energy connected with each statement or action.
Reiki is easily integrated with massage. Sometimes I combine both to encourage healing for
you. Reiki is also available on its own without massage. Clothing is not removed so it is an excellent
source of healing for anyone who is uncomfortable with massage or whenever massage is not possible
as with acute injury or illness, or when distance is a factor. Please let me know if you are interested in
Reiki being added to your massage session or if you would prefer a total Reiki session. Please call if
you have any questions. I’m here for you.
                                                                             Mary Alice

                            Reiki philosophy includes five admonitions:
                                       Don’t get angry today
                                         Don’t be grievous
                                        Express your thanks
                                    Be diligent in your business
                                         Be kind to others
