#3-The Climax? (version a) The climax of the story occurs when he makes the initial metamorphosis into a bug. The moment he realizes he is a bug, the story proceeds with falling action until he dies nearing the end. The metamorphosis causes all of the rest of the events to proceed in the story. The climax also leads to the resolution where he dies later, due to the events of his family. #3-The Climax? (version b) The climax of the story is when Gregor comes out of his room to hear his sister play the violin and is seen by the lodgers that are staying with the Samsas. This event is the climax of the story because after this incident, Gregor’s family realizes that they have to get rid of Gregor. The lodgers saw Gregor and threatened to sue Mr. Samsa, which brings about Gregor’s death and the end of the story. #4-Mood? The story’s mood is melancholy and gloomy. The mood is established by the weather. At the start of the story, the weather is foggy, cloudy, and rainy, establishing a gloomy atmosphere. At the end of the story it is a bright sunny day showing a new calm and happiness surrounding the family. #5-Motif? One motif in the story is an apple. The imbedding of an apple into Gregor’s exoskeleton shows him that he is no longer innocent. He realizes he is just a vermin to his family and will never be Gregor to them again. This symbol is used in many other stories, like the Bible. #6-Existentialism? There are many elements of existentialism but only a few are expressed in the story. One is that destiny is chosen. When reading the story on e has to believe that it’s the families destiny to lose Gregor and in losing him gain a better life for themselves. But to gain this life Gregor had to go through a drastic change to change the family’s view of him. #6-Existentialism con’t Another existentialist idea is the unanswered question of why he is a bug and how he was changed into one. Things are the way they are. It just has to be accepted. Isolation, anxiety, and despair are a part of life. This is antother idea that is expressed. Where Gregor is isolated and suffers from anxiety and despair. This becomes a part of his everyday life. #7-Theme? One theme of the Metamorphosis is how loss of compassion leads to the loss of humanity. Gregor starts off as a man in a bug’s body. But as his family begins to ostracize him he becomes more of an insect. After he is first discovered he is locked in his room. When finally offered food, he chooses rotten/fetid things. Post apple he stays almost entirely beneath his couch. He also develops a loss of eyesight and increased use of his antennae. #8-Family Change? After Gregor dies it is a major relief to the family. They were trying to figure out what to do with him, but after his death it all fell into place. The family is growing. They finally get out of the house and see how much their daughter is growing. Each of them resume responsibilities to contribute to the new life of the family. The dad and mother both get jobs and Grete assumes more responsibilities.
