Elements means “what makes up something?” Islamic Architecture:
◦ Large courtyards for gatherings ◦ Minarets (towers) – originally like a lighthouse, then for calling the faithful to prayer ◦ Prayer niches in walls – Domes on top of structures ◦ Use of geometric shapes and repetitive art with bright colors ◦ Decorative Islamic calligraphy across structure (Why not art or icons?)

Why does Islamic architecture make use of such high structures and large, imposing views? Why do they paint their structures so brightly and with so many decorations? Do we see examples of large, imposing buildings in Europe? Which structures? What elements would YOU put in your buildings to impress people?
