Settings and Encounters: (TIMELINE)
Directions: Remember this epic narrative poem is actually told as a flashback. It begins with Homer
(approx. 800 BC) asking the Muses to inspire him to tell an interesting story to his audience. Homer goes
back to 1200 BC during a time when a Trojan War hero, Odysseus, is trying to get back to his kingdom in
Ithaca. Odysseus is continually thwarted by Poseidon and spends 10 years journeying home. Homer
begins his epic near the end of the journey. Odysseus is a captive of the goddess, Kalypso as the story
begins. Athena, Goddess of War and Wisdom, pleads to her father Zeus to free Odysseus and send him
home. When Zeus agrees to help Odysseus and sends his messenger, Hermes to order Kalypso to release
Odysseus, Athena visits Ithaca to prepare Telemachus, son of Odysseus, for his father’s return. After his
release from Kalypso, Odysseus floats ashore on the island of Scheria, home to the Phaecians, under the
rule of King Alcinous (Plot sequence #15). Odysseus keeps his identity a secret for a little while but
encouraged by King Alcinous, Odysseus reveals his identity and shares tales of his journey. This begins
the plot sequence 1-13 as Odysseus flashes back to his odyssey. However, for your understanding of the
complete odyssey or journey, each of the stops is put in order from the time Odysseus leaves Ithaca for
the Trojan War until he returns home from his odyssey. For each stop on the journey, Odysseus
encounters gods, goddesses, monsters, and obstacles. Fill in a 4-5 sentence plot summary of each stop.
