The Quotes of President George W.
              Bush
The vast majority of our imports
 come from outside the country
If we don’t succeed, we run the
        risk of failure
One word that sums up probably
   the responsibility of any
Governor, and that word is “to be
           prepared”
I have made good judgements in
the past. I have made good
     judgements in the future
The future will be better
       tomorrow
We are going to have the best
educated American people in the
            world
I stand by all the mistakes I’ve
             made
We have a firm commitment to
NATO, we are a part of NATO.
We have a firm commitment to
Europe. We are part of Europe
A low voter turnout is an
indication of fewer people going
           to the polls
We are ready for any unforseen
event that may or may not occur
For NASA, space is still a high
         priority
Quite frankly, teachers are the
only profession that teach our
           children
   It isn’t the pollution that’s
harming the environment, it’s the
impurities in our air and water
         that are doing it
Its time for the human race to
     enter the solar system
Genetic Diversity

NOT IN THE BOOK
                 Diversity
• There are 3 different ways we can measure
  diversity
  – Genetic diversity
  – Species Biodiversity
  – Ecosystem diversity
           Genetic Diversity
• The variety of different genes within a
  collective gene pool
• The more alleles there are for a given trait
(within a population) the more they can
adapt to new changes within the
  environment
• This diversity protects them for the future
• There are things that can
  affect this genetic
  diversity
• Things like
   – Founder Effect
   – Bottleneck Effect
                 Founder Effect
• A limit to genetic
  diversity that is
  created when a small
  group establishes a
  new population
• If a population of
  blue- eyed people
  started a colony on a
  desert island
• There would be an
  difference in the
  occurrence of blue
  eyes
               Bottleneck Effect
• Similar to founder
  effect
• A disaster changes the
  gene pool of the
  population
• Due to only small
  portion of survivors
• Rabbits in Australia
           Genetic Viability
• A population needs to be above the critical
  value
• There needs to be a large enough variation
so that sexual reproduction can recombine
  the genes
• When below this number, it is only a matter
of time until the population dies off
Why is this important

    What do we care?
        We need species around
• Most necessary human activities require
  healthy ecosystems
  – Soil production
  – Nutrient cycling
  – Food
  – Medicine
Coevolution
      • Some changes in the
        genes/phenotypes of
        one species will
        change the
        genes/phenotypes of
        another species
      • Plants and Pollinators
      • Butterflies’ specialized
        mouthparts only work
        on one type of flower
