                                    General Remarks.
Welcome to “How to copy music from an audio CD to a computer using windows media
player 10 series”! This is a document that has been created as a reference for a moderately
skilled windows (and windows media player user). However, this is not a tutorial for windows
XP or windows media player. It is a guideline to copying music onto a computer from an audio
CD.

                                       Requirements.

In order to successfully use the guidelines provided in this document, there are a few
requirements that the user must have.

       1. The user must be moderately skilled in the use of windows operated personal
          computers.
       2. The user must be running windows XP (either „home edition‟ or „professional‟) on
          their computer.
       3. These guidelines are for version 10 of the windows media player series. So, the user
must have this version of windows media player installed on their computer.
       4. Since it is expected that the user is moderately skilled, it is also assumed that the user
can recognize and open windows media player 10 on their computer.

Important! If a user does not possess all of the aforementioned requirements, THIS GUIDE IS
NOT DESIGNED FOR THEM! Please obtain another guide that is specific to your
situation. Otherwise, obtain all necessary requirements and proceed with this
document. Also, figures 1 and 2 are pictures obtained from www.microsoft.com.
(Please see references). Also, in this document, copying music will often be referred
             to as “ripping”.

                                          Warning!
A word of caution before we get started, it is recommended that you do not try to perform
any other actions while ripping music from a CD. It is also important not to interrupt the ripping
process. Also, Windows media player 10 may look different from the pictures supplied below. If
so, please locate the specific buttons on your version as the functions are the same on all
versions.

                                                                                                -3 -
                                    Getting Started.
   1. Open windows media player 10 series. Fig 1 is a picture of what a section of the top of
the windows media player window should look like. If your media player looks different
upon opening, just locate the “Rip” button.

   2. Insert the audio CD whose contents you want to copy into the CD drive on your
      computer.

                                   Media player appearance

Figure 1 shows what a section of the top of the window should look like when media player is
opened.

                                                                                           -4 -
                                  Let’s Rip Music!
3. Click the “Rip” button. You will then be asked to select music to be ripped unto your
   computer.

4. Insert the audio CD from which you wish to copy (you will be prompted to do this by
windows media player 10 immediately you click “Rip”) .The music on the inserted CD
may appear similar to the format in Fig 2. However, the important thing is to check the
boxes to the left of the tracks you want to copy onto your computer.

5. A screen may appear from windows. It will ask what you wish to do with the inserted CD
and give a few options. Just close this screen and proceed to windows media player 10.

Figure 2 shows the selection screen for ripping music

6. Click the “Rip music” button to copy the music from the CD onto your computer.

7. Wait for all the selected tracks to be “ripped”. The files will automatically be ripped to
   your “Library”.

8. When all tracks are copied, windows media player 10 will say “Ripped to library” on the
right side of each track. You may desire to group your music into different folders. Please
refer to another procedure for this.

9. Now, remove the audio CD from the CD drive on your computer.

                                                                                            -5 -
