Typically with heavy highway construction jobs all managers may be far from their office when overseeing daily production. This is the case for managers at Tilcon’s Newark Airport job for Continental Airlines. The driving distance between the site and the field office is not far but will take an average of 20-25 minutes to get there. This is because of security check points and slow driving speed areas. The corporate offices in Mt. Hope N.J. and West Nyack N.Y. are also an hour to two hours away. One solution for communication delays are wireless notebooks. With wireless notebooks a manager can have direct contact with the field office and corporate offices with the click of a few keys. This will speed up the task of emailing company contacts, checking up to date weather forecasts, and printing out estimates and schedules. The following is a procedure for making your current notebook wireless so that you may be connected to the company network from anywhere on the construction site. Some things you will need to have are before continuing are:  (Dell) notebook  An account with a Verizon wireless service provider who uses a Wireless Wide Area Network (WWAN)  Wireless router  External wireless network card for notebook All of these things can be provided to you by calling the Tilcon I.T. (Information Technology) dept. at (973) 491- 5555. You will need to first contact the (IT) department to obtain the Service Set Identifier (SSID). This ID will give you access to the company wireless network. You will also need the following.   A client name for the wireless card A user name and password for access into the company network 3    The Dell True Mobile 1100 Series TM1100PC 11Mbps Wireless LAN Adapter card (See picture below) The Dell True Mobile 1100 Series CD for driver installation Your Dell notebook with a CD-ROM drive and a PCMCIA (PC Card) Type II or III slot Step 1. – “The installation of hardware” The first step is to install the driver for windows 2000 which is your current operating system. Turn on windows and let it completely start. Then hold the 1100 Series Wireless LAN Adapter with the label facing upward, and insert the card gently into the slot. (See picture below) Insert the Dell True Mobile 1100 Series CD into the CD-ROM drive. Then click 4 Start>Settings>Control Panel. Then double click on the System Properties icon. Click on the Hardware tab. Click on the Device Manager button in the middle of the window. Double click on the Aironet PC4800 DS PCMCIA LAN Adapter Icon under Network Adapters. 5 Click on the Driver tab and then the Update Driver button at the bottom of the window. The Update Device Driver Wizard dialog box will now appear. Click Next. Select "Display a list of known drivers so that I can choose a specific driver". Click the "Next" button at the bottom of the window. 6 Click "Have Disk". Type D:\win2000 then Click "OK". 7 Select "PC4800 DS Wireless PCMCIA LAN Adapter", and then Click "Next". Click "Next" again. Finally Click "Finish". 8 The driver installation has now been completed. To prove the installation is complete:      Click Start->Settings->Control Panel. Double click on the System icon Click on the Hardware tab Click on the Device Manager button Click on Network Adapters. "PC4800 DS Wireless PCMCIA LAN Adapter" should appear on the list. If no red x or yellow exclamation point appears next to the network adapter icon in Control Panel, the installation was successful. If a red x or yellow exclamation point does appear next to the network than call the IT department for help. Step 2. You are now ready for the next step which will be Configuring System Settings with the Dell TrueMobile 1100 Series 11Mbps Wireless LAN Adapter. Place in the Dell TrueMobile 1100 Series CD into your Dell computer's CD-ROM drive. Next, Click Start > Run and then type in the Run window D:\utilities\setup.exe where "D" is your CD-ROM's drive letter. 9 Click “Next” three more times for the following three windows. Then click the Finish button to complete the installation. After the installation is complete, you need to configure the card's network settings in order to be able to access the company network. Setting the Client Name and SSID 1. Start the TrueMobile Diagnostics utility by clicking Start->Programs->Dell TrueMobile->TrueMobile Diagnostics. 2. From the Commands menu select Edit Properties then the window below will appear. 3. This is where you enter your Client Name and SSID value 4. Then Click on the OK button at the bottom of the window. Your setup is now complete! 10 Connecting to the Tilcon network Now when you turn on your Dell notebook all you need to do is click on the Tilcon N.Y. desktop icon. From here you will be brought to the Tilcon home web page. On the right side of the screen you will see a link for connecting to the Intranet. Click on this link. Next you will see a pop up window with another link called Tilcon NY intranet West Nyack. Click on this link. From here you will see another window and you will be asked to enter your user name and password. These are unique identities for your own use. Please contact Tilcon I.T. for help with these passwords. Once you enter these in and your information is authenticated you will have access to the World Wide Web and the Tilcon Network. Now you will be able to email people within the company using Outlook Express and print to the field printer in the off site trailer. Thank you for completing this procedure.
