Resolution in Support of the New York State Dream Act
WHEREAS, the Student Government Association of Queensborough Community College
recognizes the inherent worth and dignity of all people, regardless of immigration status; and
WHEREAS, undocumented students are currently ineligible to receive New York State tuition aid;
and
WHEREAS, the New York State Dream Act would open New York State’s Tuition Assistance
Program (TAP) to all students who meet the funding criteria, irrespective of their immigration
status, and would also provide access to driver’s licenses, work authorization, and health care;
and
WHEREAS, the mission of the City University of New York (CUNY) is to provide accessible
education to the public regardless of a student’s immigration status; and
WHEREAS, there are an estimated 4,500 undocumented students in the CUNY system, of which
several hundred attend Queensborough Community College; therefore, now, be it
RESOLVED that the Student Government Association of Queensborough Community College
supports the passage of the New York State Dream Act (S.4179/A.6829) so that undocumented
students within CUNY who meet in-state tuition requirements in New York can access state
financial aid; be it
FINALLY RESOLVED that the Student Government Association of Queensborough Community
College urges the New York City Council, the New York State Assembly, the New York State
Senate and all other appropriate legislative bodies to support the passage of the legislation in
the state Assembly and Senate.
