Tips for Bringing Your Car out of Winter Storage

If you were gone for the winter, drive different cars during different seasons, or just chose not
to drive for a few months and opted to use public transportation instead, spring has finally
come and it’s time to take your car out of winter storage. A car is meant to be driven and if it
sits idle for months at a time it’s important to do the following to get it ready for everyday use
once again:

Check/Change Fluids
Car fluids are what keep it running properly. It’s important to check them all and change them
as needed. The oil should be replaced since oil that has been sitting for a long period of time
can become contaminated. Operating a car with contaminated oil can damage the car’s
engine.

Check Tires
The cold winter air can affect the tire pressure of a vehicle, as can the fact that the tires have
been sitting in the same position for months. It’s likely that you will need to inflate your tires
after a few months of inactivity. Check the owner’s manual to find out what the proper tire
pressure is for your vehicle.

Check the Battery
Check the charge of the battery and check for corrosion. If the battery isn’t fully functioning,
replace it.

Check the Lights
It’s possible that a few of the light bulbs won’t work. It’s better to find out as soon as possible
rather than when you are out driving at night and don’t have proper visibility.

Clean It
A car that is stored in a garage can collect dust and a car that is stored outside can be dirty
from the elements. Clean the exterior and the interior since insects or even small animals may
have found their way inside while the car was sitting dormant for the winter.

Take a Quick Trip
The first trip that you take in the car should be a short one and it’s important to stay within a
few miles of home at first, just in case. Keep the radio off and listen for any strange noises and
take note of how the car is handling itself. If anything seems off, take the car to a mechanic
before resuming heavy driving just to be sure that nothing else is wrong with it.
