19 years of sport for malaysian diving team
Hi, my name is Yeoh Ken Nee. I have been representing Malaysia for
19 years in diving. I also recently just qualified for the Olympic games
2012 in London. I am going to share with you how I train throughout
the 19 years I have gone through.
I did not started my diving as my main sport at first. I remember my
parents send me to swimming lesson at the age of 6 as my first sport
activity. Why swimming? I can say it’s a compulsory sport, everybody
must know how to swim so that they do not drown while swimming
in the sea or swimming pool. After swimming, my parents send me
to gymnastics. Cause gymnastics can train your body to be good at
coordination and have good flexibility body. After gymnastics, I when
to learn taekwondo how to self-defense. And finally, I entered diving.
I started diving at the age of 10. My first coach was from china, her
name was Liu Jirong. During that time Malaysia did not have a diving
team for Malaysia. I was the pioneer for Malaysia diving. When I was
very young with a group of 30 young kids, we train very hard for our
diving practice. The coach was very strict and we train very long
hours every day. We almost train 30 hours a week.
At the age of 12, I started to represent Malaysia for the very first
time. And this is where I started to stay in sports academy center.
Now I am a national team for Malaysia diving team. Our hours of
training even more tougher and longer as we enter the national
diving team. We train 8 hours a day and 6 days a week throughout
the whole year. I remember I was scolded by coach and cry a lot
because of the hard training every single day. Not every single young
divers able to maintain this toughness. Month by month I see some
of my friends leave the team. Finally, only 10 persons remain in the
team. This 10 young divers were qualified to represent Malaysia for
the 1998 commonwealth games. I was fourth placing for this
At the age of 17 years old, I competed for the 2000 sydney Olympic
games. And finally, I able to be an Olympian diver. With years of hard
training I won myself with lots of medal for Malaysia. SEA GAMES all
together I have won 15 gold medals. For the commonwealth games, I
have one silver and one bronze. In the Asian games, I won 3 silver
and 4 bronze all together.
In this year 2012 Olympic games, will be my last tournament I am
going to compete before I retire as a national diving coach. I hope to
do my very best for my Olympic games and I always dream to win a
medal in the Olympic. Diving have been part of my life for 19 years, I
will miss this sports very much when I retire. London here I come!
