Evaluate the Success of Your Business Idea
Before you start your business, here are some questions you may want to ask yourself. You must

understand that owning a business takes a lot of work and commitment. You also need to recognize

what it will take for your business to be successful.

 Can I do it? Do I want to?

 Judge your skills as an entrepreneur.
 Select a creative business idea.

 Do I have a business plan? Did I do the research? Will my

                                                            Am I an Entrepreneur?
While the listed skills and strengths are some characteristics of an entrepreneur, they do not determine
if you are one. To get an idea of where you are skill wise, follow these steps. Add the numbers you got
from the previous page to get your total score. Write your total on this line ____. Compare this score to
                              the rating scale below.

0-45 Points While you may have the desire to become an entrepreneur, you are going to have to

do a lot more than just hope to become one. Work on developing the skills that you scored lowest on
and use your strengths to your advantage.

45-90 Points You are on your way to having the characteristics of an entrepreneur. With good

ideas and hard work you will be able to succeed. Look for opportunities and use your strengths to
                              create a successful business.

90-135 Points Super Entrepreneur! You are a natural. Entrepreneurship is in your blood. If you

continue to demonstrate the skills of an entrepreneur you will go far in the future!

Take a look at how you rated yourself! Look at your strengths. What areas are you the best in? Look at
your weaknesses. What can you do to improve in those areas? What can you do to gain the skills and
characteristics of a good entrepreneur? Take a moment to write your thoughts down.

How Will You Reach Your Customers
     and Convince Them to Buy?
While crying won’t convince your customers to buy
from you, marketing and advertizing will. How will you
market and advertize to inform your customers about
your business and convince them to buy? What are
some ways you can advertize? There are many ways
you can reach your customers. The biggest challenge
is deciding which way will be the most effective. To
determine this, you will need to look at your customers’
                          characteristics and needs.

Sample: To market my product I will: Advertize with
homemade signs along the road, distribute flyers
around my neighborhood, build a stand where I will sell the food, and give away
samples as I sell product.

Who Are Your Competitors? What Is
    Your Competitive Advantage?
Who are your competitors? Competitors do
what you do. There are two major types of
                                 competitors. Direct competitors do exactly
what you are doing. Indirect competitors may
be doing something similar but not exactly
what you are doing. For example, if you have a
ski shop, another business that sells skis
would be your direct competitor. A snowboard
shop might be your indirect competitor. To do
well in business you will need to have a
competitive advantage. This means you must
do something better than your competitors. What is your competitive advantage?

Sample: My business has the following competitors in the area:
 1. Grocery Stores. My competitive advantage is that my food is locally grown,
and freshly picked from the garden, as well as less expensive.
 2. Other Food Stands. I have a competitive advantage because my food is
organic and does not use chemicals.

                 What About the Money?
What will you charge your customers for your
product? You may want to look at what your
competition is charging. How much will it cost
you to produce your product? A startup cost is
how much money it will take you to start your
                                 business. These costs include equipment,
materials, cash etc. What is your startup cost?
Where are you going to get the money to start your business? You can use money
from personal savings, family, friends, or loans.

Sample: I am going to charge 50% less on my product than the leading grocery
store does on theirs. The money I make will cover my costs quickly because I
have a low start-up cost. My startup cost will be $50 which will pay for seeds,
supplies for signs and flyers, and bags for customer’s food. I will use my birthday
money to fund my business.

                         How Will You Do It?
Who is going to help? When starting a
business it is nice to have a team of people
to help you out. Team members can be
paid or unpaid. Who is on your business
team? What are their tasks? Where will your
customers buy your product or service? The
location and method of your sales is
important. You may choose to sell at one
location, or multiple places. Timing is also important. Some businesses are
seasonal and need to start at a certain time of the year to be successful. How
soon will you be able to start selling? How soon will you be able to make a profit?

Sample: I am the boss of the business. My business will run with my siblings
Nathan, Whitney, Spencer, and Andrew as my business team. Together we will
plant, weed, water, and sell our produce. We will sell our produce in our front yard
and at the local Gardner’s Market. This business is seasonal and will run from
June-October. Our business will make a profit during the harvest season.
