     Inn Still Stands

The Deer Lake Inn, although not always called that, has always stood next to the main highway heading north through Schuylkill County. As
with all these old buildings, it is hard to tell exactly when it was built. In the case of the Inn, a succession of owners and local tradition hold
it to date to 17809. Thus it would already have been a landmark in 1811, when the county was founded. The Centre Turnpike was six years
old and was not quite complete everywhere. The turnpike has replaced the earlier road, King’s Highway, connecting Reading to Sunbury.

Throughout its 231 year history, up to recent years, the traveling public could stop and get a meal at the inn, although it has been some
time since wayfarers arrived by stagecoach, Conestoga Wagon or on horseback. Former owner Regnal Leibensperger, interviewed about
the inn in 2000, said the building was not eligible to be declared a historic site because it had seen to many changes. Over the decades,
owners have built on to it, doubling its size. The outside, now covered with vertical boards, is depicted with lateral siding in an old
photograph. Yet, upon walking through the side entrance door, apparently not the original door, you can breath an air of antiquity.

If the stones of the large fireplace to the right could speak, although not part of the oldest section of the building, their tales would more
eloquently relate the happenings of decades of southern Schuylkill County than could any history book. On the second floor, the large
room used for so long as a dining room for special occasions, the original log structure of the walls is exposed and complementary
     furnishing enhances the effect.

“You walk up there and it takes you back to that time,” owner Pamela Scheib said of the landmark she loves. Scheib and her husband,
Warren Jr., bought the Deer Lake Inn in fall 2006. They moved their Country Crafts store from the Fairlane Village mall to the timeworn
building, reopening in the spring of the next year.

Now after 15 years of business, Country Crafts will go solely online when the Scheibs close the store
June 30 and retire to Virginia Beach, Va., where they will sell merchandise through a website. The Inn
will be sold at auction July 11 and its future is uncertain.

       Schuylkill County 2012
          Market Report
Schuylkill County is shaking off its coal roots to emerge as a service, technology and small business based economy. The Marcellus
Shale boom to the north is having a very positive, albeit indirect business impact with goods, services and jobs being sought locally. The
I-81 corridor hosts many Fortune 500 Companies who have discovered its value and solid employee base. Industrial activity favors the
HighRidge Business Park also along this corridor. Pottsville is this market's largest city and anchors the medical system, professional
and governmental offices and is also home to Yuengling, America's Oldest Brewery.

The office market is dominated by healthcare and governmental agencies with few leases or sales above 5,000 SF in size. Food
production and distribution are well anchored here. Grocery giant Wegman’s is adding a 500,000 SF, $65 million dollar addition to its
regional distribution center which will add 219 jobs.

Hy-Line International, LLC is completing a 36,000 SF facility for egg laying and production. Solar Innovations continues to grow in the
Pine Grove Industrial Park. The Empire Education Group continues to invest in the area by adding 150 jobs. St. Martin America opened
a frameless cabinet production facility in Cressona. This company also has plants in Texas and China.

Retail construction and leasing was stable through 2011, with those locations along the Rte. 61 corridor being the highest in demand.
Industrial development has been spearheaded by the Schuylkill County Economic Development Office which manages 12 industrial
parks located across the county representing more than $1.2 billion in capital investment over 10 years. Residential sale volume is down
8% from the prior year with sale prices relatively stable, down 1%. The median home price is a low $79,900 further delivering value to
    the workforce.

Schuylkill County, with its rural character and a sparse population within its 799 square mile area, exemplifies an essential quality of
small town America: hard working people doing their utmost to improve their quality of life. Now and again small packages produce big
results. This is definitely true here.
