									                               AMSA MEETING MINUTES

                           WEDNESDAY JANUARY 28, 2009

                        LIFE SCIENCES BUILDING RM 142 5:30PM

WELCOME:

     Scott began the meeting by welcoming everyone who had attended and informed
      members that we would be going through some quick details of upcoming events
      and then welcome Kaplan representative Anne Pennick in her presentation regarding
      the “Secrets to the MCAT Computer Based Test”. Additionally, he reminded members
      that we will be holding a Kaplan MCAT Prep course auction after the meeting.

AMSA NEWS:

     AMSA’S GLOBAL MEDICAL BRIGADE: The application for the trip to Honduras
      from Aug 5th-12th is due next Wednesday, February 4th. Applications can be found on
      our website at luc.edu/orgs/amsa. If you are interested in going on the trip, please
      submit your application in the AMSA office mailbox or during our meeting next week.
      We will be holding interviews for the limited spots that we have during the week of
      February 8th–12th. If you have any questions, contact Laura at lwilliams5@luc.edu

     MISERICORDIA VOLUNTEER DAYS: The volunteer days will be on every Saturday
      and will be going on for two different shifts (10AM-12PM or 1:30PM-3:30PM). If you
      are interested in signing up for a shift, please contact Therese Hogg at
      thogg@luc.edu. The volunteer days will begin soon so don’t forget to sign up for a
      shift!



     AMSA’S HAB ITAT FOR HUMANITY SPRING BREAK TRIP: During Spring Break
      from February 28th -March 7th we will be traveling to Mobile, Alabama to help Habitat
      for Humanity build houses and do some volunteer work! The total cost the trip is
      $323 (includes housing, food, and transportation). There are still spots available! If
      you are interested in going, the deadline to decide is at the END OF THIS MONTH! If
      you are interested you must contact Marika at miszczy@luc.edu .

     AMSA’S VALENTINE’S DAY ROSE AND CARNATION SALE: This will take place
      during the week of February 9th- February 13th. All proceeds will benefit the American
      Heart Association. Come by our table in CFSU to place an order for a rose/carnation
      to be delivered to your special someone. Keep in mind that the delivery is limited to
      Loyola dorms ONLY! Orders for individuals who are off campus will be notified via
      email for onsite pick-up. WE NEED HELP! (please contact Marika at miszczy@luc.edu)
      You can sign up to work the table on February 9 th and 11th to take the flower orders
      (Monday and Wednesday). And you can also sign up to help prep the delivery as well
      as be a special deliverer on Friday, February 13th. All will be counted as an AMSA
      event!
     AMSA BAKE SALE: Friday, January 30th from 9AM-3PM in CFSU: Bake Sale to
      benefit AMSA’s Habitat for Humanity Trip! To sign up to bake or work the table,
      contact Marika at miszczy@luc.edu. WE STILL NEED SOMEONE TO COVER THE
      1:30-2:30 PM SHIFT!



  KAPLAN PRESENTS: “SECRETS TO THE CBT MCAT”

         We introduced Anne Pennick, the Pre-Health Academics Manager for Kaplan.
         She reminded members that Kaplan offers many free events on campus such as:
          free practice exams, free sample classes, etc.
         If you are interested in receiving information regarding events such as these,
          please contact her at anne.pennick@kaplan.com
         Also, Kaplan is hosting a free MCAT practice exam on Saturday, February 28 th at
          8am in Damen Hall. If you are interested in being a proctor at the exam, please
          contact Russ at ravella@luc.edu. This WILL COUNT AS AN AMSA EVENT!
         Then, Anne introduced the concept of the CBT MCAT.
         She explained the breakdown of the exam into each section tested and the
          particular times allotted for each section.
         Additionally, she presented the 2008 medical school stats as far as the number of
          MCATs taken (75,809) and the number of actual total applicants in 2008
          (42,231).
         Anne also revealed many of the average test scores of test takers, applicants,
          and matriculants from 2008.
         She revealed many of the factors that may go into your choices of choosing a
          test date, a test location, and how to prepare for the MCAT.

  •     Thursday, March 19th at 7PM in Zips: AMSA’s 3rd Annual Date a Future Doctor Date
