           What’s Surrealism?
• Surrealism was/is an
  art movement based
  on dreams.

• It began in the early
  1900’s.
                  Surrealism
• The Surrealists were greatly
  inspired by the
  psychological studies of
  Sigmund Freud.

• Freud thought that by
  analyzing dreams, you
  could figure out certain
  psychoses and mental
  disorders.
What are some qualities of
     Surrealist art?
               • Surrealist art
                 usually has
                 unrealistic and
                 fantastic
                 scenery.
It also typically has distorted or
    incorrect sizes of objects.
Many (but not all) Surrealist art
 is set in wide open space and
  have long shadows, as well.

          • Salvador Dali is the
            most famous
            Surrealist, and his
            fame was greater than
            just being an artist.
            He directed a dream
            sequence in an Alfred
            Hitchcock movie and
            had a line of perfume.
