The Spirit Woodbine Willy I picked this poem because it was a very inspirational poem for soldiers the war. It states that that no matter the hard times you still need to go on. It bring out the “spirit” in you at bad moments. That is the reason why I chose this poem. When there ain’t no gal to kiss you, And the postman seems to miss And the fags have skipped an issue, Carry on. When ye’ve got an empty belly, Carry on. And the Bulley’s rotten smelly, And you’re shivering like jelly. When the Boche has done your chum in, And the sergeant’s done the rum on. Carry in, And there ain’t no rations comin, When the world is red and reeking, Carry on. And the shrapnel shells are shrieking, And your blood is slowly leaking, When the broken battered trenches, Are like the bloody battered trenches, Carry on. And the air is thick with stenches, Carry on. Though your pals are pale and wan, And the hope of life is gone, For to do more than you can, Is to be a British man, Not a rotten ‘also ran,’ Carry on..
