GRAND OPENING / RIBBON CUTTING WESTERN INSURORS 320 North Jeffers, North Platte, NE 69101 308.532 .4060 On January 28th Western Insurors celebrated their new location at 320 North Jeffers with a Ribbon Cutting. Western Insurors has been assisting Nebraskans with their insurance needs for nearly 100 years and now they’re making it easier. In August of 1997 they opened their first location in North Platte at 4th & Jeffers. After merging with the Sam Thomas agency in 2005 Western Insurors conducted business from two offices, 4th and Jeffers and the other at 121 South Jeffers. Currently the agency has locations in North Platte, Ogallala, Sutherland, Scottsbluff, Indianola, & Grant. “I’m thrilled to be part of an organization with such longevity in the insurance industry. I’ve been impressed with the knowledgeable and talented staff and am excited to be affiliated with the agency,” says Carrie Brown, Office Manager. Instead of being a “jack of all traits” their agents are dedicated to a specific area of expertise based on their experience, education, and knowledge. This Ribbon Cutting represents a uniting of two offices and completion of their new addition. They feel that they can provide even more products and convenience to their clients. Chances are when you visit them you’ll need more than one form of insurance. Being all at one location they can accommodate those needs. In the past century Western Insurors has gone through a few changes but one thing has always and will always take precedence-their goal to provide the communities of Western NE with the best carriers, products, and knowledgeable agents possible. MERCHANTS! Merchants please do not accept any expired Chamber Bucks. If a customer presents an expired Chamber Buck send them to our office and we’ll exchange it for a current one. Thanks! 5 502 South Dewey, North Platte, NE 69101 (308) 532-4966 (308) 532-1850 Fax: (308) 532-4827 LEADERSHIP LINCOLN COUNTY by Melissa Garcia Two phrases were repeatedly heard, and their evidence witnessed, Tuesday January 19, 2010 at Leadership Lincoln County’s Healthcare Day. Those phrases were “quality” and “state of the art.” Numerous employees along our tours expressed how fortunate we are to have up-to-date technology and services at GPRMC. Our day began with a presentation from the Hospital Board Chair, Dave Pederson and Hospital CEO Greg Nielsen. Their presentation was an eye-opening glimpse into Great Plains Regional Medical Center as a locally run, economic driver. In an uncertain economy, one thing remains consistent--people will get sick. The hospital reported that it is on track for net revenue of $120 million. They gross approximately $195 million, but around $85 million is written off for Medicare, Medicaid and true charity write-offs. In the medical community we have also witnessed growth in services available. The hospital has recruited 23 physicians in the past year and a half with 7 more on the way. With each new doctor the community benefits from a $.5-1 million dollar increase in revenue. Marcia Baumann, Physician Recruitment Director took the time to share with us the long tedious process of acquiring a new physician. She stressed partnership with the hospital, physicians and community to continue to make North Platte a welcoming place for doctors and their families. Equally important, GPRMC employ 814 people from 48 zip codes. Laurie Ryan, Performance and Clinical Outcomes Director, shared with us how GPRMC measures quality. They use 5 main categories that are measured against numerous indicators. The categories are Safety, Timely, Effective, Efficient, and Equitable. Each year in the United States between 44,000-98,000 people die of preventable deaths in hospitals. Through the story of a mother who lost her 18 month old daughter in one of the nation’s most prestigious hospitals, we discovered that lives are lost in human error associated issues such as lack of systematic communication and erroneous medications. In order to measure patient safety they track mistakes in meds administered, or caught before administered and have implemented comfort rounds. Patients at GPRMC can expect to be checked in on by a nurse every hour to evaluate the three p’s: pain, potty and position. The top categories of effectiveness are bases on treatment of heart attack patients (100%), heart failures (93%), pneumonia (94%) and surgical care (98%). The standard of 100% is based on the most complete, best care given each time. Efficiency is based on communication. In order to keep patients at GPRMC safe, teams are required to take “timeouts” to review safety checklists. They have even gone so far as to hang room height posters in operating rooms so the check lists can’t be missed. We also toured the hospital including stops in the pathology lab, ER, OR and Callahan Cancer Center. It was a great chance to see all of the state of the art equipment, remodeling and heart of what makes the hospital tick. It was also impressive to see the proof that our local board was moving toward its vision of being the preferred regional medical center in west central Nebraska. Each department had the newest technology, seasoned staff, pride in their services and a strong diversity in those services. I would encourage anyone to find a way to get a behind the scenes look! I want to thank Stuart Shepherd and all of the staff that took time and invited Leadership Lincoln County in for a behind the scenes look at our state of the art facility, in the heart of the State. The Nebraska Foster Care Review Board is looking for contentious community members to represent children in foster care as citizen reviewers to monitor the safety and well being of children in foster care. As a citizen reviewer you are a part of a local board that works together to make recommendations to legal parties to ensure that children in foster care best interests are being considered and to move children to permanency in a timely manner. If you are interested in making a difference in the lives of Nebraska’s foster children and youth and would like to receive an application, or if you have any questions about volunteering please call the Foster Care Review Board at 1-800-577-3272 or view our website at www.fcrb.state.ne.us.
