National Standards Development
Process
College and career readiness standards developed
in summer 2009
Based on the college and career readiness
standards, K-12 learning progressions developed
Multiple rounds of feedback from states, teachers,
researchers, higher education, and the general
public
Final Common Core State Standards released on
June 2, 2010
Common Core State Standards Design
Aligned with college and career readiness
Focused and coherent
Rigorous content and application of
knowledge through high-order skills
Build upon strengths and lessons of current
state standards
Common Core State Standards Design
Internationally benchmarked
Based on evidence and research
Why is this important?
Currently, every state has its own set of academic
standards, meaning students in each state are
learning to different levels
Common standards will help ensure our students
are globally competitive.
Why is this important?
Help to prepare students with the knowledge and
skills they need to succeed in education and
training after high school.
All students must be prepared to compete with not
only their American peers in the next state, but
with students from around the world
Why is this important?
Clear standards help students, parents and teachers
understand what is expected of them
Standards create a foundation for working
collaboratively across states and schools districts

Kansas Common Core Standards adopted by State
Board October 2011
Common Core Standards for Mathematics
Focus in early grades on number sense (arithmetic
and operations) to build a solid foundation in math
Evened out pace across the grades
High school math focus on using math and solving
messy problems, similar to what would see in the
real world
Problem-solving and communication emphasized
Common Core Standards for Mathematics
Grade Level Standards
K-8 grade-by-grade standards organized by domain
and critical areas for each grade
9-12 high school standards organized by domain
Organization by course in appendix
Common Core Standards for ELA
Text complexity
Balance of literature and informational texts
Direct link to college and work readiness
Literacy standards for science and social studies
Clear vertical progressions across grades
Integration of Language Arts – reading, writing,
literature, speaking, media
Common Core Standards for ELA
o Grade-Level Standards in English Language Arts
K-8, grade-by-grade
9-10 and 11-12 grade bands for high school
Four strands: Reading, Writing, Speaking and Listening,
and Language
o Standards for Literacy in History/Social Studies,
Science, and Technical Subjects
Standards are embedded at grades K-5
Content-specific literacy standards are provided for grades
6-8, 9-10, and 11-12

Kansas Additions for English Language Arts
(Document available at: http://www.ksde.org/Default.aspx?tabid=4605)
Additions are largely points of
emphasis and cohesion rather than
entirely new elements.
Emphasize:
• Social nature of literacy learning
• Meta-cognitive strategies
• Shared responsibility from all Kansas
educators both in academic and
career/technical contexts
• Culturally sensitive texts
• Media literacy
• Technical reading and writing skills
• Writing process
• 6-Trait writing terminology
15
Kansas Additions for Mathematics
)
• No additional standards per se
• Additions are points of emphasis for curriculum design
• Two main areas of emphasis
• Pattern Recognition
• Probability and Statistics
• Can be found behind the mathematical practices and in front
of the grade by grade standards
16
Kansas Advantages to Common Core Standards
• A focus on college and career readiness
• Inclusion of the four strands of English Language
Arts:
• Reading
• Writing
• Listening and speaking
• Language
17
Kansas Advantages to Common Core Standards
• The benefits of an integrated literacy approach –
all Kansas educators have a shared responsibility
for literacy instruction, regardless of discipline or
content area.
• A focus on results rather than means – (“the
Standards leave room for teachers, curriculum
developers, and states to determine how those
goals should be reached and what additional
topics should be addressed” (p. 4 Language Arts).)
18
Kansas Advantages to Common Core Standards
• Efficiencies of scale – common standards allow for
greater collaboration among states in the areas of
• Professional development
• Resource development
• Teaching tools
• Alignment to Past Efforts– particularly common
core critical areas in mathematics are closely
aligned to the focal points of NCTM standards

Understanding the Common Core
How to Read the Standards
How to Read the Standards
Standards - define what students should
understand (know) and be able to do.
Clusters - groups of related standards.
Domains - larger groups of related standards. For
each grade level in Grades K–8, the standards are
organized into four or five domains.
How to Read the Standards

Clear vision of how students should approach and
learn mathematics.
Shifts focus to ensuring mathematical understanding
over computation skills
Rewards instructional best practices
1. Make sense of problems and persevere in solving
them.
2. Reason abstractly and quantitatively.
3. Construct viable arguments and critique the
reasoning of others.
4. Model with mathematics.
5. Use appropriate tools strategically.
6. Attend to precision.
7. Look for and make use of structure.
8. Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning
