Raden Saleh is a painter by the name of a well-known and become part of art
history in Indonesia. Here's a little profile of painter Raden Saleh.

His mother named Mas Adjeng Zarip Hoesen, Terboyo live in the area, near
Semarang. Since the age of 10, he left his uncle, the Regent of Semarang, told
the Dutch superiors in Batavia. Drawing craze began to stand out when people
                         attend school (Volks-School).

Friendliness to the environment make it easy to get along the Dutch and the elite institutions of the
Dutch East Indies. An acquaintance, Prof. Reinwardt Caspar, founder of the Botanical Garden and the
Director of Agriculture, Arts, and Sciences for Java and surrounding islands, judged it worthy of the bond
department of the department. Incidentally in the agency's existing descendants of Belgian painters, AAJ
Payen imported from the Netherlands to create a landscape painting in Java to garnish van Kolonieen
Department office in the Netherlands. Payen Raden Saleh interested in the talent and initiative to
provide guidance.

Payen did not stand out among art experts in the Netherlands, but a former professor at the Academy of
Fine Arts Doornik, Dutch, Raden Saleh was enough to help explore and learn Western art manufacturing
techniques, such as oil painting. Payen Saleh also asked the youth trip around Java looking for models
for landscape painting. He was commissioned to draw Raden Saleh types of people that visited
Indonesia in the area.

Impressed by the extraordinary talents of their students, Payen suggested that Raden Saleh to learn
Dutch. This proposal is supported by the Governor-General GAGPh. van der Capellen who ruled at that
time (1819-1826), after he saw the works of Raden Saleh.

In 1829, almost simultaneously with the breakage resistance Diponegoro by General Hendrik Merkus de
Kock, finance Capellen Saleh study in the Netherlands. However, his departure was carrying another
mission. In an official letter to the Department of the Dutch high-van Kolonieen written, during a trip to
the Netherlands Raden Saleh in charge of teaching the Dutch Treasury Inspector de Linge about the
customs and habits of the Javanese, Javanese, and Malay. This suggests another skill Raden Saleh.

Learning to Europe
During his study in the Netherlands skills developed rapidly. Naturally, he considered rivals fellow young
artists who are learning Dutch. The young painters began to paint flowers. The painting is very similar to
the original interest was also shown to Raden Saleh. Evidently, some beetles and butterflies are fooled
to settle on it. Instantly out various words of mockery and derision. Feeling hot and humiliated, quietly
pious Raden away.

Ketakmunculannya for days to make his friends worried. Appears presumption, painter Indonesia's
desperate act of desperation. Soon they were to his house and locked the door from the inside. The
door was forced open with a break. Suddenly they shouted to each other. "The bodies of Raden Saleh"
lying on the floor covered in blood. Raden Saleh in an atmosphere of panic appeared from behind
another door. "The painting you just trick the beetles and butterflies, but I can fool a human image," he
said smiling. The young Dutch painter that was then left.

That's one interesting experience Raden Saleh as a mirror ability. The first two years of his life to deepen
and learn Dutch printing technique using a stone. As for painting, during the first five years, he learned
to paint a portrait of Cornelis Kruseman and Andries Schelfhout theme of the landscape as they work to
meet the taste and quality of the art of the Dutch at that time. Krusseman was the court painter who
often receive orders and the Dutch royal family.

Raden Saleh chose painting is more stable as the path of life. He began to be known, even the
opportunity to exhibit at The Hague and Amsterdam. Raden Saleh saw the painting, Dutch society was
flabbergasted. They did not expect a young painter from the East Indies can master the techniques and
capture the character of Western painting.

During the study in the Netherlands after, Raden Saleh may apply to stay longer to learn to "wis-, land-,
meet-en werktuigkunde (science, land surveyor, and aircraft), in addition to painting. In negotiations
between the Minister of Colonies, King Willem I (1772-1843), and the Dutch government, he may
postpone the return to Indonesia. But cash scholarship from the Dutch government discontinued.

When the reign of King Willem II (1792-1849) he received similar support. Several years later he was
sent abroad to increase knowledge, such as Dresden, Germany. Here he lived for five years with the
guest of honor status of the German Empire, and forwarded to Weimar, Germany (1843). He returned
to Holland in 1844. Subsequently he became the Dutch royal court painter.

Even more insight into his art evolved over the romance of admiration on the work of Ferdinand Victor
Eugene Delacroix (1798-1863), legendary French painter. He also went into the depiction of animals
reunited with the aggressive nature of man. Start wandering to many places, to live up to the elements
dramatika he was seeking.

While in Europe, he witnessed the revolution of February 1848 in Paris, which will inevitably affect him.
From France he was with the famous French painter, Horace Vernet, to Algeria to stay for several
months in 1846. This region was born the inspiration to paint wildlife in the desert. Observations that
led to a number of painting wild animal fights in the form of large frames. Another country which he
visited: Austria and Italy. European odyssey ended in 1851 when he returned to India with his wife, a
wealthy Dutch woman.

Back to Indian
Not many records of his return in the Indies. He is believed to be the conservator of the "collection
agency Collection of Art Objects". Some royal family portrait and landscape show that he still works. The
others, he divorced his wife and marry her former royal family palace Solo descent.
In Batavia he lived in the house around Cikini. The building itself was built according to the technique in
accordance with his duties as a painter. As a sign of love for nature and its contents, he handed over
some of the pages are very broad at the zoo board. Now the zoo becomes Taman Ismail Marzuki. While
the house was Cikini Hospital, Jakarta.

In 1875 he went again to Europe with his wife and returned to Java in 1878. Subsequently, he settled in
Bogor until his death on 23 April 1880 during the day, presumably because a poisoned maid accused of
stealing paintings. But the doctor to prove, he died of a thrombosis or blood clotting.

Written on his grave marker in swarms, Bogor, "Raden Saleh Djoeroegambar of Sri Radja Padoeka
Kandjeng Wolanda". Sentence on the gravestone that is often given rise to many interpretations that
provoked prolonged debate about the national vision of Raden Saleh.
