Congratulations to Seniors Beth Darrah and Karlie Fletcher, both of whom have entries that have been accepted for
Xavier University’s High School Junior/Senior Fine Arts Exhibition. This is a most prestigious honor. Beth entered a
pointillism drawing and Karlie entered a ceramic vessel.
Thanks to the Cathedral football team and fans, we’ll be sending a check for $2,000 to the Susan G.
Komen Indy Chapter to help in their fight against Breast Cancer. Thanks to you both for your help in
making this a great event. Pink certainly is a great color!
Cathedral Dance Marathon raised $5,358.24 for Riley Hospital for Children on Saturday. It was an extremely fun-filled
event with lots of dancing, games, and some amazing speakers. The IU Dance Marathon Morale and Marathon
Relations committees were in attendance. The Morale team taught the IUDM Line Dance for 2010 and
it was very popular! The IUDM executive members told us that it was an unbelievable event and they
are excited for next year! We are extremely thrilled with the success of this year's Dance Marathon,
and we hope that it has raised a greater passion for the kids at Riley throughout the Cathedral! Thank
you so much to everyone that helped out!
For the kids,
Conner Cox, Sarah Fox, and Mr. Fogel
Congratulations to the students that have been selected to attend the 2010 NAIS PoCC/SDLC (National Association of
Independent Schools’ People of Color Conference/Student Diversity Leadership Conference) for this fall will be in San
Diego, California during the first week of December. This conference is designed to meet two needs of minority
students: the need for people of color to come together for networking and support, and the need for schools to find
ways to build and sustain inclusive communities. This is an excellent conference that has benefited many of our students
in past years.

Announcements:
One of our parents asked me today to explain who is “free” on the Magazine Free Day. He had heard that only those
students who met their quota and also that everyone would be free. The answer is that if we meet our
school quota by Tuesday, October 26th, then everyone will be free. If we do not, then the students who
have sold their quota of magazines will be free. Those who have not will be here at school doing work
that their teachers have left behind for them. Each teacher has been asked to leave the amount of work
needed for a class period or 48 minutes, which will be graded and counted in their 2Q average.
Magazine Sale Update:
As of Oct. 19th the Magazine Sale has obtained 243,000.00 towards its goal of $250,000.00. After Tuesday, Oct. 26th at
noon no further orders can be accepted. We are hopeful that by then we will have achieved our
goal and no students will need to come to school on Friday, Oct. 29th. However, if we do not
attain this goal, then those students who did not achieve their individual goal will be in
attendance at school on Friday, October 29th for a regular school day. Please, if you have
orders to turn in, do so before Tuesday at noon. Together, we can make this goal.
Orders can still be submitted online through www.qsp.com using the Cathedral code: 425004249. Completed
address books and personalized emails are also still being accepted.
If you have any questions on the quota status of your student, please email: Krismorris54@sbcglobal.net
Remember, if Cathedral achieves goal, EVERYONE will receive the Free Day—let’s make a strong final effort for
participation in this important school fundraiser! Each and every order goes towards the school’s goal!

ATTENTION, SENIOR PARENTS: Watch your U.S. Mail for information about purchasing a senior ad for your
student to go in the 2011 Cathedran, Cathedral’s yearbook. This has become quite a tradition for parents of
graduating seniors, and you would not want your son or daughter to be one of the few left out. The
letter/order form should be arriving soon.
ALSO FOR SENIOR PARENTS: Once again you are reminded that every senior needs to have a
yearbook portrait taken at Prestige Portraits in order to be included in the senior section of the
yearbook. If you have not done so already, please make an appointment soon by calling 829-2081
after 2 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and after 10 a.m. Saturday or visit www.PrestigeIndiana.com. The
deadline is December 3.
The next Math League is on November 16th.

This is a thank you sent to Tim Kennedy, Cathedral Parent and active provider of our tailgating, for the great pre-game
tailgating party and welcome provided before the last football game by a Brother Rice football parent.
Please accept a most sincere "thank you" for an out-of-this-world tailgate on Saturday. I have spoken with
many other Brother Rice parents, and must say we were all just blown away by the hospitality of the
Cathedral families. The food was just tremendous, and the welcome we received from the Cathedral parents
was truly amazing. We were so warmly greeted by so many lovely Cathedral parents; the whole gathering
had such a wonderful community feel to it!
In debriefing with my son (an offensive lineman) after the game, he commented on how nice
and gentlemanly the Cathedral players were. This is not always the case, even when Brother
Rice competes against other Catholic schools. I told him I was not surprised, given the parents
that we met at the tailgate.
My son is a senior, and I am saddened to think that I won't be making the trip to a future
Cathedral/Rice game (or tailgate!). Please know that the experience we had there this weekend
was one of the highlights of the season for our family.
Good luck to you in the rest of your season. I hope to see Indy Cathedral at the top of the Indiana rankings when
the playoffs conclude!
Sincerely,
Cathy Weissenborn, Brother Rice football parent

Because October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, pink ribbons will be sold in resource periods on
Friday in honor of those in our Cathedral family who have been touched by cancer. Write the name of
your friends and family who have fought cancer on each pink ribbon. These will be displayed for the rest of
October in the cafeteria. All money collected will go to the Cathedral Fund in honor of our own.
Theology tutoring is available at no cost for freshmen before and after school. Interested? Please see new addition
under “Tutoring” later in this email.

Thursday, October 21st will be Founders’ Day at Cathedral. This date celebrates the Sisters of Providence, who founded
Ladywood Academy and St. Agnes Academy, which later combined and then added Cathedral to become our coed
school of today. When the academies existed, the faculty and staff was given a Founders’ Day Luncheon,
commemorating these Sisters of earlier days.
The date for the luncheon is always close to the founding date for the Sisters of Providence,
with their motherhouse near Terre Haute, Indiana, and is given by the Cathedral Mothers’ Club. On
this campus, three schools have intertwined. Ladywood High School, founded in 1926, covered the
ground from Emerson Avenue to Arlington Avenue and from 46th Street to 56th Street and was a
private, mostly boarding school for young women. It later combined with St. Agnes High School,
which moved from the site just next door to the original Cathedral High School downtown and was
known as Ladywood-St. Agnes High School. Shortly thereafter, Cathedral High School, led by a Robert
V. Welch and a lay board of directors, purchased part of the grounds, combined the all-male Cathedral
High School with Ladywood St. Agnes, and began the Cathedral High School which we all know and
love.
On this day with gratitude we celebrate the service of the Sister Mary Ann Stewart (Sister of
Providence), Sister Mary Sue Freiburger (Benedictian), Sister Lynne Matteson (Franciscan), and all of
the other Sisters who have served at Ladywood, St. Agnes, and Cathedral High Schools since their conception.

Dress Code: Uniform Sweatshirts
Monday-Thursday, no non-uniform sweatshirts are to be worn anywhere on campus during the
school day. Seniors may wear college sweatshirts, but activity sweatshirts may not be worn by
anyone except on Fridays. Students are encouraged to wear uniform sweatshirts if they are cold.
Coats may be worn between buildings, but they must be removed upon entering the classroom.

On Tuesday, October 26th we will have a 2-hour delay for the school day and school will begin at 9:34 a.m. One of our
accrediting agencies is ISACS (Independent Schools of the Central States), which has a 7-year
accreditation cycle. We are currently in year #2, which means we do the self-study, allowing us to
prepare for the ISACS accreditation visit next year. To do so, we will be using this 2-hour period for
planning and organization.

However, on this day, there will be 79 students who will be notified ahead of time that they need to be in
school at 7:15 a.m. for their End-of-Course-Assessment retests.

The fall PHONING FOR DOLLAR$ student phonathon supporting the Cathedral Fund is coming soon! The phonathon
team will be calling alumni in support of the Cathedral Fund on the evenings of October 24, 25, 27, 28, November 2, 3,
and 4. The Advancement Office is seeking good phonathon student-participants from all grade levels for our team.
Last year the team raised thousands of dollars for the Cathedral Fund. We’re looking for a team of friendly, confident,
and involved students who would enjoy the opportunity to call alumni and ask for their support of this important cause.
The Cathedral Fund, our annual giving program, provides support for educational initiatives not fully covered by
tuition. Students may sign up for one, two, or as many evenings as they can work. The
Advancement Office provides training for the team, alumni calling lists, a word-for-word
script, pizza and pop, cash prizes, and service hours. Calling will be done from CHS offices
from 6:30 to 9:00 p.m. during the above evenings under the direction of Mrs. Diane
Szymanski, Director of the Cathedral Fund. This is great philanthropic experience for
students and is a fitting follow-up to the Magazine Sale. This activity can be referenced in
their high school resume for college applications. Students can win cash prizes each evening,
and we also award prizes for the most successful callers of the overall phonathon. Mrs. Szymanski will award service
hours for this work. If you think your student would be a good candidate for this important activity, please encourage
her or him to contact Mrs. Szymanski at dszymanski@cathedral-irish.org, or remind them to stop by the Advancement
Office (Kelly Hall across from Guidance Center) to sign up!

Service Outreach News:
Our beginning of school year offers inspirational service opportunities for our Cathedral students.
Class Service Projects As an insight regarding the good works that we can accomplish this year, ponder this scripture:
“We love because he first loved us.” 1 Jn 4:19. And as we perform simple acts of giving, and sharing fellowship with
others, we ask God to pour his love into our hearts that we may love one another. In October, many students will be
helping the Hispanic children of the Lord’s Pantry to get winter coats from the State Fairground on Saturday, October 30th
from 7 to noon. Warm young bodies can stay healthy and ready for learning. The Lord’s Pantry is located in one of the
poorest parts of Indianapolis. In November, sophomores will be helping serve our popular spaghetti dinner to the Lord’s
Pantry members on Wednesday, November 10 from 3:30-7:15 PM. You may also join our outreach on Saturday, Nov
13, 10:00-1:30, when juniors will be serving up a fabulous lunch for the Saturday noon meal at the Cathedral Soup
Kitchen. Freshmen will begin helping at the Catholic Charities Christmas Store on Nov 18 and 19. Details on all of these
on-going class service projects are noted below in Service Opportunities as wonderful expressions of giving and grace.
School Wide Canned Food Drive for Oct 25-28 and Nov 1-5 As a school wide drive, the Student Council will be
leading us in a canned food drive for Catholic Charities Crisis Center and Q95 in week #1 and Holy Cross Thanksgiving
Distribution in week #2. See details below for service hour, jeans days and math incentives for great participation in this
event. Remember, we are asked to give 20 cans of either green beans, corn, or fruit or $10 to support these drives for
Holy Cross.
Cathedral Clubs and Chapters Serving It Up! In addition to our class service projects, students from Cathedral High
are active in their community in so many valiant and giving ways:
Mentoring Magic: 85 high school students mentor every week after school at IPS 58, IPS 106,

Make It Mine” Service Outreach Cathedral students are leading the way planning a service outreach for 200 IPS
middle school students in our community. We are coordinating a special day of events combining reading, athletics and
other passions such as art, music and dance which will be held at the University of Indianapolis. The theme for this day is
“MAKE IT MINE”. We have already earned on grant of $1,500 and are planning more regarding our Saturday, Dec 4
2010 and Saturday, Feb 26, 2011 events. Our next meeting is Sunday, Nov 14 at 12:30 PM in room 3304 (Mr. Payne’s
room). Please email Jasmine Whitaker, Imani Parker-Robinson, Haley Roach or Mrs. Halstead (chalstead@cathedral-irish.org)
with your interest. Many juniors and sophomores are involved in this project.
This program has two outreach dates: the first one is Saturday, Dec 4 at IPS #106 and the second one is Feb 26, 2010
at the University of Indianapolis, 9:30-2:30 PM each event. As it is our goal to present this day to 200 IPS middle school
students in February, the December event is a smaller test of the program for about 100 students. These two events are
targeted for IPS middle school students to help them commit to their academics, high school graduation and greater
successes in life.
Fall Mission Trip to New Orleans Our group departs next Wednesday, October 27 to November 1 to help rebuild and

chaperones excited to be compelling assistance to the New Orleans area. New Orleans, fais do do, here we come!

service projects with enthusiasm and compassion. Should you desire to pursue an outreach project with an agency not listed, you may
also consult the list of service agencies available by clicking here. By working with diligence and interest on your service, you should
find yourself achieving about four hours of service each month. The balance of 2010 and 2011 provides rich opportunities to direct
helpful hands and hearts to aid our community needs.
Service Reflection
They say it takes a minute to serve a special person,
An hour to appreciate them,
A day to love them,
But then an entire life to forget them.
May your Cathedral service personally enrich you and your spirituality, as we seek to
address challenges faced by our brothers and sisters in our immediate community and world-wide.
Service hours for freshmen, sophomore and junior students for the academic year of 20010-11 are due on March 1, 2011.

Meditation: Ephesians 3:2-13
“… so that the manifold wisdom of God might now be made known through the church to the principalities and
authorities in the heavens.” (Ephesians 3:10)
What a calling! We, the church, are called to reveal God’s wisdom to the spiritual forces that are arrayed against the
gospel (Ephesians 6:12). Whether or not we ever “preach” the gospel to a single human being, whether or not we ever
engage in any direct spiritual warfare, our lives are declaring Jesus’ victory over the devil. How we live, how we take hold
of God’s grace at work in us, how we allow the Holy Spirit to move through us—it all manifests God’s infinitely
imaginative plan of saving us and overcoming sin and death.
Do you believe that this calling, this privilege, includes you? It’s true. No one is too insignificant. At home, at work, or at
school; in church, in prison, or in the hospital; in good times and bad, married or single, what we love and what we do
tells the devil and his minions that they have been defeated. It tells them that love casts out fear and that mercy
triumphs over condemnation every time.
Your life matters! No day is worthless. How you use your time, your short conversations with Jesus during the day—they
all have spiritual repercussions. Your inner longings and prayers, unseen or unheard by other humans, echo in the
spiritual realm and push back the darkness even farther. Unseen acts of self-denial, mercy, and charity manifest God’s
love. Your private prayers, your worship at Mass, even your hurried declarations of love or need for God’s life—they all
demonstrate his righteousness and wisdom.
So let your light shine in the darkness! Live simply, in a way that reveals God’s plan in creating you. Direct your thoughts
and prayers, hopes and dreams toward the One who created you; who suffered, died, and rose from the dead to save
you; who dwells so richly in you now. Let the Spirit fill you with more of his love and peace, joy and kindness. Then let
these overflow to the people around you. Every time you do, the devil gets weaker and weaker, and God’s kingdom
grows stronger and stronger.
“Father, thank you for including me in your plan. May my life be a bold declaration of your victory to all the powers of
heaven!”
(Psalm) Isaiah 12:2-6; Luke 12:39-48
