Parents/Caregivers learn to use love and limits in guiding their youth, in family communication and in problem-solving. Youth learn to set goals, understand stress, and practice skills to deal with peer pressure. The program is structured such that in the 1st hour the youth and parents/caregivers meet in separate sessions. The parent session is discussion and video-based. The youth session involves role-playing, interaction, fun activities & games. Then during the last hour the families come together to practice skills, work on projects, and do fun activities. Talking Canvas – Fun with Art Education Talking Canvas is a fine arts volunteer program that is run by Shuler PTO and is carried out by several creative parent volunteers. The Talking Canvas volunteers strive to expand your child's knowledge about the arts in a fun and educational way. We introduce the children to the artist, their history, their works of art, related vocabulary, and then end with a hands on project that is related to the artist. There will be three artists that your child's class will be learning about during the school year, look for Talking Canvas documents that will be emailed to you. You can ask your child questions about the artist and project and see what they have learned! If you are interested in learning more about the program, please contact the volunteer co-chairs Jennifer Park or Hillary Nielsen. A great idea is to dress your kids in layers-‐-‐that way they can add or subtract clothing as needed to enjoy school and recess!* How Illnesses Spread: The main way illnesses like colds and flu are spread is from person to person in respiratory droplets from coughs or sneezes. These droplets can also landed on surfaces and are touched by someone else who touches their eyes, mouth or nose before washing their hands. How to Prevent Illnesses from Spreading: The MOST important way to stop illnesses is by washing your hands often or using an alcohol-‐based hand sanitizer. When you cough or sneeze use a Kleenex, throw it away, and wash your hands. Important Hand washing Habits Use warm water and soap to wash hands for at least 15-‐20 seconds. That is like singing the Happy Birthday song twice! Hand sanitizers are great because they don’t need water to work! Just remember to rub your hands together until the gel is dry— that way it will kill the germs on your hands. Shuler Walks: Start Somewhere 1k On October 7th, Shuler Elementary will be joining the Waukee Community in a state-‐ wide initiative to raise health awareness and promote healthy lifestyles. This is part of the healthiest state initiative to help promote healthy living in Iowa. K-‐2 students will walk at 12:40 and 3-‐5 students will walk at 1: 50. Students will be walking outside (weather permitting) so please make sure they are dressed for the weather and wearing good shoes. Parents are encouraged to come join their children during their walk time. Students will return to their regular classes after the walk. “As Iowans, weʼre known for our friendliness and civic engagement. Thatʼs part of the reason weʼre trusted to start the process of picking this nationʼs president. We take this responsibility seriously because we care about our country, each other and our communities. Now, itʼs time to take even better care of ourselves. Together, letʼs tackle yet another important challenge. Together, letʼs become the healthiest state in the nation”. The Waukee Invitational Mile Run for third through seventh grade is coming up on September 26th and will be held at Eason Elementary. All runners will receive a finisher ribbon and medals will be awarded to top- place winners of each grade level. There is also a traveling trophy awarded to the elementary school with the highest finishers. Be sure to get a registration form from your PE teacher so you can be a part of this fun event!
