Behner, Ethel M. COLE ‘40

Ethel, 90, of Mount Vernon, OH, passed away 29 Aug 2011. She was born in Lima, Peru
on 04 Apr 1921 to missionary parents. In 1936 she was sent to the U.S. for an education.
After some time in FL, she attended MVA so she could be near relatives. After
graduating, she lived in New York City where she became secretary for Elder Robert H.
Pierson, who later became General Conference president. She also worked as a secretary
to Elder Fagel, who founded Faith for Today. In 1947 Ethel married Russell Behner ’40
and then lived in LaGrange, OH. In 1969 her family moved to Mt. Vernon, OH where
she worked at the Ohio Conference of S.D.A. as secretary to Elder Art Harms. She
worked here until 1987 and then took a trip around the world.

She is survived by her husband, Russell Behner ’40 of Mt. Vernon, OH; son, Howard
Behner ’76 of Howard, OH; two daughters, Marjorie BEHNER Sands ’73 of Westmont,
IL and Kathleen (Dr. David Powell) BEHNER of Chicago, IL; two grandchildren;
brother-in-law, Wayne (Dorothy RICHARDSON ’49) Behner ’40; sister-in-law, Doris
BEHNER Goronzy ’55.

Services were conducted by Elder Russell Lucht on 02 Sep 2011 at the Dilley-Lasater
Funeral Home in Mt. Vernon, OH. Burial was in Mount Vernon Memorial Gardens.

Bell, Naomi Rebecca PROSSER –att ’36, Cl ’38 or ‘39

Naomi, 93, passed away 04 Apr 2011, in Colorado Springs, CO. She was born 24 Oct
1917 in Wellington, OH to Elmer G. and Rosella DRAPER Prosser. She married John
Keith Bell in Dec 1936. She attended the Mount Vernon (OH) Business School. Naomi
previously worked at Cooper-Bessemer Co. in Mt. Vernon and served as the executive
director of the Knox County (OH) American Cancer Society. She enjoyed gardening,
birding, knitting, and traveling. She was a member of the Mt. Vernon (OH) Hill SDA
Church.

She is survived by a son, Jerry S. Bell ’64 of Montville, OH; a daughter, Ann BELL
Speer of Colorado Springs, CO; 7 grandchildren; 8 great grandchildren; one great-great
granddaughter; two brothers, *George H. Prosser of Belville, OH and Donald Prosser
’42 of Redding, CA; two sisters, Esther PROSSER Dales att ’36? Cl ’37? of Mt. Vernon,
OH and Florence PROSSER Hawthrone ‘37 of Spokane, WA. She was preceded in
death by her husband.

Memorial services were held 26 June 2011 at the Mt. Vernon (OH) Hill S.D. A. Church
with burial in the Mt. Vernon Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Mt. Vernon, OH.

Benge, Robert Earl ‘48

Bob, 81, of Ooltewah, TN passed away 14 May 2011 in Collegedale, TN from
complications of renal cancer. He was born 29 Nov 1929 and was the son of Earl J. and
Anna (HOOPES) Benge. He grew up in the eastern PA/northern DL area. While
attending MVA, Bob learned the printing trade and was the yearbook editor in 1948. He
attended Atlantic Union College and Columbia Union College before being drafted in the
Army infantry during the Korean War. His service in the Army Reserves and the Korean
War was over 20 yrs. of service to his country. He worked as a printer then later as a
computer operator. He retired from PPG Industries in TX. Bob was a life member of the
Collegedale (TN) VFW and the Seventh Infantry Regiment. Bob enjoyed spending time
with his family and friends and could always be counted on to help those in need.

He is survived by his wife of 56 yrs., Marlene TROTT Benge ’51 of Ooltewah; a son,
Robert C. (Deborah) Benge ’73 of Ooltewah, TN; a daughter, Susan Benge ’76 of Mt.
Vernon, OH; two grandsons; a sister, Dorothy (Henrik) BENGE Larsen of Jacksonville,
AR. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Myrtle BRADFORD
Proud.

Graveside services with military honors were held at Mt. Vernon (OH) Memorial
Gardens Cemetery on 23 May 2011 with Elder Russell Lucht officiating.

Berry, Charlotte Marian GOAD

Marian 89, passed away 29 Apr 2011 in Lenexa, KS of congestive heart failure. She was
born 05 Mar 1922 in Foreston, MN to Lawrence and Matilda CLAYTON Goad. She
attended Union College in Lincoln, NE then graduated with a BA degree from the Univ.
of MD. She was also a graduate of Rutgers Univ. with a MA in guidance and counseling.
Marian worked toward a PhD at Bowling Green Univ. in OH. In Aug 1942 she married
Kenneth J. Berry. From 1948 to 1953 she was a missionary in Africa, where she founded
the Chebwai Mission Girl’s School. Marian taught at elementary and high school levels
in the USA and served as the assistant superintendent of education for the Ohio and
Iowa-Missouri Conferences of S.D.A. After retiring in 1982, she authored 14 books.

She is survived by a son, Dr. Daniel (Pamela) Berry, D.O. ‘75; 3 grandchildren.
Funeral services were held 06 May 2011 at Chapel Oakes S.D.A. Church in Shawnee,
KS. A graveside service was held 09 May 2011 at Montecito Memorial Park in Loma
Linda, CA.

Burdette, Myrtle FELDER ‘41

Myrtle passed away on 18 Jul 2011 after having a MI and stroke following surgery in
South Carolina. She was the last of six children of Charles B. and Myrtle ROSS Felter.
After graduating from MVA, Myrtle attended Columbia Union College. In 1947 she
married Robert “Bob” Burdette ’43 then moved back to Mt. Vernon, OH where she lived
for 60 yrs. in a house they built there. During this time, Myrtle worked as a homemaker,
secretary for the Ohio Conference of S.D.A. and in the 1960’s was a dining room hostess
at the MVA cafeteria. She enjoyed reading, handwork, cooking, gardening, and kittens.

She is survived by her two daughters, Judy BURDETTE (Ron) Marshall ’67 of Inman,
SC and Bonny BURDETTE (Gregory) Friedrich ’74 of Napoma, CA; two grandsons;
other MVA alumni --nephews, David Rawson ’67 and Robert Rawson ’55; nieces, BG
SKEEN Borchers ’56, Joyce HINES Walhberg ’60, Carol SKEEN Lane ’61, and Susan
HINES ’71. Myrtle was preceded in death by her husband, *Robert “Bob” Burdette ’43
in Jan 2011; five sisters, Delores FELTER Hines, Lucille FELTER Phillips, Hazel
FELTER Hines, Erma FELTER Rawson, and Nellie FELTER Conaway; other MVA
relatives –brother-in-law, Bruce Rawson ’34; sister-in-laws, Betty BURDETTE Skeen
Cosner ’32, Margaret BURDETTE Xander ’33, and Jean BURDETTE Larsen ’38.

A memorial service is being planned for sometime in 2012 in Mount Vernon, OH. Burial
is to be in Mount Vernon Memorial Gardens Cemetery.

Burdette, Robert S. ‘43

Bob, 86, passed away 12 Jan 2011 in Spartanburg, SC after a long illness. He was born
in Cleveland, OH to Mr. Ira O. and Cora DICKERSON Burdette. He owned and
operated “Bob’s Garage” in Mount Vernon, OH for many years. He was also employed
by Harvard Corp. in sales and installation of oil filtration systems. Bob was a member of
the Mt. Vernon (OH) SDA Hill Church. He was very active in the MVA Alumni Assoc.
and served as President for many years. Enjoyed by alumni and visitors, Bob spent
countless hours working to make the MVA archives possible. He was a veteran of WW2.
Bob is survived by his wife, *Myrtle ’41 of Inman, S.C.; two daughters, Judy
BURDETTE (Ron) Marshall ’67 of Inman, SC and Bonny BURDETTE (Gregory)
Friedrich ’74 of Nipoma, CA; two grandsons. He was preceded in death by three sisters,
Betty BURDETTE Skeen Cosner ’32, Margaret BURDETTE Xander ’33, and Jean
BURDETTE Larsen ’38.

The Dowds-Snyder Funeral Home in Mt. Vernon, OH is assisting with arrangements. A
memorial service is being planned for sometime in 2012 in Mt. Vernon, OH. Burial is to
be in Mount Vernon Memorial Gardens Cemetery.

Callahan, Evelene (HATFIELD)

Evelene, 81, of Worthington, OH, passed away 21 Sep 2010. She was born in Pikeville,
KY to George and Anna Bell ANDERSON Hatfield. Evelene worked for Worthington
Foods in sales and marketing for over 30 yrs. She enjoyed traveling, tagging butterflies,
and golfing. Evelene was a member of the Worthington (OH) Seventh-day Adventist
Church for over 40 yrs.

Survivors include two sons, G. Michael (Theresa) Callahan ‘70 of Columbus, OH and
Roger Callahan ’74 of Raleigh, NC; two grandsons; numerous cousins, nieces, and
nephews. Her husband of 41 yrs., John Roger Callahan, and her brother, Eugene Belcher
preceded her in death.

Services were held at the Rutherford-Corbin Funeral Home in Worthington, OH on 30
Sep 2010.

Carder, Sylvia M.

Sylvia, 91, of Mt. Vernon, OH, passed away 12 Jan 2011. She was born 07 Sep 1919 in
Carrollton, OH to Fred and Daisy MINOR Leggett. Sylvia was a member of the S.D.A.
Hill Church in Mt. Vernon, OH.

She is survived by her daughter, Brenda CARDER (Michael) Kaiser att ’73? Cl’76 of
Mt. Vernon, OH; a son-in-law, Raymond Horne, Sr. of Mt. Vernon, OH; six
grandchildren, including Tonia HORNE Lukas att ’74 Cl ’76; Brandon Styndl att ’96 Cl
98; 9 great grandchildren, including Renee Purdy att ’96 Cl ’98, James Lukas att ’96 Cl
’99, Melissa Lukas att ’03 Cl 05; 8 great-great grandchildren. She was preceded in death
by her husband, Homer Carder and a daughter, Betty CARDER Horne.
Services were held 16 Jan 2011 at the Dilley-Lasater Funeral Home in Mt. Vernon, OH
with Pastor Ron Vozar officiating. Burial was in Mount Vernon Memorial Gardens
Cemetery, Mt. Vernon, OH

Carpenter, Joseph S. ‘41

A response was received from the letter sent out to the members of the Class of ’41 for
the 70 yr. reunion for Alumni Weekend in April 2011. The e-mail reported that Joe had
passed away. His wife, Shirley, is living in Friendswood, TX.

In response to a letter sent to the Class of ’41 members for Alumni Weekend 2011, a
phone call was received from his son, Wendell Carpenter, in Feb 2011 that Wendell had
passed away 2-3 years ago.

Cermak, Paul Andrew ‘51

Paul passed away on 15 May 2011 in MV. He was born 31 Oct 1032 in Pittsburgh, PA to
John and Anna GILDAN Cermak. He graduated from Columbia Union College in 1955
with a business degree. While there he met Irene, who was to be his wife of 54 yrs. Paul
was a very kind, gentle person who liked to fix things. He was able to fix anything and
taught his son to do many things. Paul worked in carpentry. He taught himself to play
the organ and enjoyed playing the harmonica, which he played for church. He loved to
travel and especially loved his children and enjoyed doing things with them. He was a
retired member of the Asbestos Workers #24.

He is survived by his wife, Irene Cermak; a son, Richard Cermak of MD; a daughter,
Patrica CERMAK Hardy of Sandy, UT; 5 grandchildren.

Funeral services were held on 19 May 2011 at the White Funeral Home in Summersville,
WV. Internment followed in the West Virginia Memorial Gardens in Calvin, WV.

Christenson Grace SNIDER ‘31
During preparation for Alumni Weekend 2011, information was received regarding the
passing away of Grace, 98, of Tallahasse, FL in Nov 2009. She was the last on twelve
siblings of which Lewyer “Jack” Snider ’41 was a member.

Collins, Robert –former fac

Bob of Orlando, FL passed away in May 2010 of pancreatic cancer. He worked at MVA
as vice-principal, industrial arts teacher, and boy’s dean in the late ‘60’s and early ‘70’s.
He was a graduate of Southern Missionary College (now Southern Adventist University).

He is survived by a son, Ted Collins ’71 of Hagerstown, MD; a daughter, Jacque
COLLINS Kilgore ’68 of League City, TX. His former wife (divorced), Norma Collins,
lives in Hagerstown, MD. She retired from the E.G. White Estate at the General
Conference. While here at MVA, Norma worked as the principal’s secretary.

Danforth, Jack Leslie ‘43

Dotson, W illiam C. ‘55

Bill, 74, of Norwalk, OH, passed away in his sleep in Estes Park, CO while on vacation.
He was born 18 Aug 1937 in Mt. Vernon, OH to Clinton and Helen Dotson. Bill was
raised in Mt. Vernon, OH with his seven brothers, Bob, Ben, John, Gary, Tom, Charles
“Midge” and Doug by his father and step mother, Nell Dotson. After graduating from
MVA, he attended Bowling Green State University in OH. He held certificates as a LPN
and licensed nursing home administrator. During the Korean War, Bill proudly served in
the U.S. Army. He was the founder of Gaymont Nursing Center in Norwalk, OH. He
has held numerous board seats and served on multiple committees for Huron county, OH.
Bill was an active member of the S.D.A. Church in Norwalk. He was also a past
president of the MVA Alumni Association.

He is survived by his wife, Sherri; a son Bill (Erin) Dotson II; six grandchildren including
Anthony Dotson ‘97; his father, Clinton R. (Audrey) Dotson ’41; two brothers, Doug
Dotson ’66 of Waynesville, OH, and Tom Ute; aunt, Lucille DOTSON Van Nostrand
Long ‘39. Bill was preceded in death by his mother, Helen M. Dotson; brothers,
Benjamin Dotson ’59 and Clinton Robert Dotson, Jr. att ’51 Cl ?, ; stepbrothers, Charles
“Midge” Ute, John Ute, and Gary Ute.

Arrangements were held through the Secor Funeral Home in Willard, OH. His funeral
service was held 28 Sep 2011 at the Norwalk (OH) S.D.A. Church with Pastor Marius
Marton officiating. A private family graveside ceremony will be in Mound View
Cemetery in Mt. Vernon, OH.

Feltman, Icyle M.

Icyle, of Howard, Oh passed away 15 Sep 2011. She was born 15 Jan 1922 in Clouster,
Oh to Steve and Elizabeth JOHNSON Craig. In 1942 she married Ralph White and
graduated from beauty school in Newark. She operated a beauty shop in Zanesville, OH.
She was a dedicated mother who taught her children spiritual values along with being a
great cook and homemaker. She worked in Bethesada Hospital and Physician’s Group
offices in Zanesville, OH and at the Washington Adventist Hospital in Takoma Park,
MD. Later she worked at Rhodes State Office Tower in Columbus, OH. After retiring ,
she married Elvin Feltman on 28 Nov 1983. She was a member of the Seventh-day
Adventist Church.

Icyle is survivied by her husband, Dr. Elvin Feltman; a son, Capt. Alan (Marina) White
’80 of Ooltewah, TN; a daughter, Sandra (Charles)Richards of Apple Valley, OH, Jayne
WHITE (Dr. James) Todd‘68 of Dalton, GA; stepsons, David Feltman ‘ 71 of Loma
Linda, CA, John (Karen Griffin ’73) Feltman ’72 & former fac of Mt. Vernon, OH and
Don (Rebecca) Feltman ‘ 74 of Vienna, VA; her sister, Adrienne Jago of FL; 10
grandchildren; 3 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; three
brothers; one grandson.

Serves were held 17 Sep 2011 at the Dilley-Lasseter Funeral Home in Mt. Vernon, OH
with Pastor Fred Shoemaker officiating.

Feltman, Lillian Mae

Lillian, 87, of Mt. Vernon, OH, passed away 14 Oct 2011. She was born in Martinsburg,
WV, on 20 Mar 1924. She grew up in Takoma Park, MD, with her five siblings. She
attended Washington Missionary College for one year. She enjoyed playing the piano
and singing. She worked at the Review and Herald in Takoma Park, MD, at Lazarus
Department Store in Columbus, OH, as a dental assistant for her husband, and later
provided child care in her home.

Lillian is survived by her sons, David Feltman ’71 of Loma Linda, CA, John (Karen
Griffin ’73) Feltman ’72 and former staff of Mt. Vernon, OH, and Don (Becky) Feltman
’74 of Vienna, VA; three grandchildren including Kevin (Andrea) Feltman ’96 of Mt.
Vernon, OH; two brothers; Eugene (Mary Fern) Elliott of Zellwood, FL and David
(Suzanne) Elliott of Hancock, MD; a sister, Florence (Clarence) Pommering of Zellwood,
FL. Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, Roy Elliott, Jr. and a
sister, Helen Ellis. Her former husband from 1946-1982, Dr. Elvin Feltman, also
survives.

A private service was held at the Dowds-Snyder Funeral Home in Mt. Vernon, OH.

Foley, Esther LEACH ‘41

In obtaining information for the 2011 Alumni Weekend display for the Class of 1941, we
found out from Art Leach ’46 of FL, Esther passed away in 2010. Esther was a dietitian.
She was married to Dr. Joseph Foley, who she had met at Loma Linda, CA. They had
four children. They lived in Jacksonville, FL for 40-50 years before moving to the
Orlando area to be closer to her sons. Esther had been unable to walk for the past 3-4
years following a fall. While she hit her head, her mind was good.

Esther was one of the ten Leach children born to Clarence V. “C.V.” Leach att 1912 and
Halle/Halla METCALF Leach att 1911. Her youngest brother, Arthur “Art” (Vivian)
Leach ’46 is the last surviving member of the family. Art, a retired minister and lawyer,
held her funeral service in Orlando, FL.

She is also survived by her three sons in the Orlando, FL area, Joe Foley, a lawyer, Greg
Foley, a doctor, and Douglas Foley, a minister in the Florida Conference of SDA. Her
daughter is a RN in CA. Esther was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Joseph Foley,
three years before her and her siblings, Dan, Brainerd ’30, Clement V. ’30, Edmond
“Bud” (Doris DIENER ’44) att ’42, Ben ’39, Lois LEACH Skeen Margolis att ’34, and
Naomi att ’42.

She was buried by her husband near the Forest Lake Seventh-day Adventist Church in
Apopka, FL at the Highland View Cemetery.

Esther was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Joseph Foley three years before her.

Follett, Phillip
Elder Follett, 79, of Collegedale, TN passed away on 07 Oct 2011 following a long and
courageous battle with cancer. He was born in Kansas City, MO on 15 March 1932. At
an early age his family relocated to CA. In 1953 he entered the pastoral ministry. During
his 58 yrs. of work, his positions included administrator in OH, MD, Northern CA, and
MA, being a vice president of the General Conference of SDA, and working with
LifeTalk Radio. At the time of his death he was a member of the Collegedale (TN) SDA
Church.

Elder Follett is survived by a son, David Follett att ’75, Cl ‘75 of Fitchburg, MA; a
daughter, Lorraine FOLLETT (Scott) Ball ’76 of Ooltewah, TN; two grandchildren. He
was preceded in death by his wife, Bernardine.

A memorial service was held at the Collegedale (TN) S.D.A. Church with Dr. Gordon
Bietz officiating. Burial was in CA.

Fulweiler, Robert W., Jr. ‘68

Robert, 61, passed away 24 Dec 2010 after a short courageous fight with cancer.

He is survived by his wife Beverly CANFIELD Fulweiler; two daughters, Rebecca
FULWEILER (Scott) Routt and Chastity FULWEILER (Kendell) Meyer; two
grandchildren; a brother, John (Leslie) Fulweiler ’74 of Covington, KY; sister, Jane
FULWEILER (Murl) Poynter ’63 of Woodland, CA.

Services were held at the Taylor Mill SDA Church in Taylor Mill, KY on 30 Dec 2010.

Gee, Norbert ‘49

Norbert of Englewood, CO, passed away 06 Sep 2010.
In 1951 he went into the Army and served for two years at Ft. Mead near Baltimore then
Ft. Sam Houston in San Antonio, TX. Norbert attended Andrews Univ. In Aug 1954 he
married Helen________, who preceded him in death in March 2002. Norbert worked in
insurance and the mail department at Loma Linda University. He was interested in
genealogy and liked to sing.

He is survived by two sons, Chuck Gee and            ; two daughters, Cindy and Caron
GEE; two grandsons.

The Olinger Hampden Mortuary and Cemetery in Denver, CO was in charge of
arrangements.

Gibson, Carol Ann ‘56

Carol, 72, of Clarksfield, OH passed away 05 Feb 2011 suddenly at her home. She was
born 15 Jul 1938 in Clarksfield to Laurence and Louise REISEN Gibson. After attending
MVA, she went to Columbia Union College in Takoma Park, MD. Carol was a LPN and
worked for many years at Gaymont Nursing Home in Norwalk, OH. She retired in 2003.
She also helped with the family dairy. Carol was an active member of the S.D.A.
Church. She enjoyed her dogs and cats, crocheting, sewing, and singing.

Carol is survived by a sister-in-law, Carol J. Gibson Clarksfield, OH; several nephews
and nieces, including Mark (Lisa) Gibson ’82 of Lebanon, OH and Sharon GIBSON
(John) McKeown ’80 of Sale Creek, TN. She was preceded in death by a brother, Carl F.
Gibson ’53.

Services were held 10 Feb 2011 at the Eastman Funeral Home in New London, OH with
Pastor Russell Gaskill officiating. Burial was in Clarksfield, OH

Jauan, 38, of Mt. Vernon, OH, passed away unexpectedly on 24 Sep 2011. She was born
19 Sep 1973 in Los Angeles, CA. She was a member of the Mt. Vernon (OH) Hill SDA
Church.

Jauan is survived by her husband, Karl Goeppinger; two sons, Austin Smith of Mt.
Vernon, OH and Tyler Smith of Butler, OH; a daughter, Kayla Alcott ’08 of Mt. Vernon,
OH; her adoptive mother, Doreen Vaughn – former staff; three brothers, Charles Alcott,
Benjamin Lonewolf, and Richard Alcott, Jr. Jauan was preceded in death by her father,
Gary Petit; mother, Violet Lonewolf; a brother, Darrell Alcott.

A memorial service was held 29 Sep 2011 at the Mt. Vernon (OH) Hill SDA Church.

Griffith, Lois Annette STOTTS ‘66

Lois, 62, of Perrysburg, OH passed away on 30 Jan 2011 at home. She was born 41 Jul
1948 in Huron, OH to Harry and Charlotte Stotts. At MVA she sang in the Echoliers,
singing nationally including Carnegie Hall which was one of her fondest memories. She
attended Andrews Univ. graduating in 1971 with a BA in Home Economic Education.
She married Dave Griffith and settled in Fostoria, OH. Lois taught classes in Pittsburgh,
PA at a Community College of Allegheny County. She was selfless with her time and
talents, always spending time with friends and helping others.

Lois is survived by her husband, Dave Griffith of Perrysburg, OH; three sons, David
Griffith of Sweet Briar, VA, Charlie Griffith of Dublin, OH and Patrick Griffith of
Perrysburg, OH; two grandchildren; three sisters, Virginia STOTTS (Rodney) Hoover
’54 of Huron, OH, Janice STOTTS ’56 of Huron, OH, and Alice STOTTS Raifsnider ’62
of Centerburg, OH.

Services were held at the Witzler Shank Funeral Home in Perrysburg, OH with Pastor
Tom Compton of Edenton, GA officiating. Burial was private.

Brenda, 59, of Gadsden, AL passed away 08 June 2011. She was very much loved and
will be greatly missed by her family and friends.

She is survived by her husband, Martin R. Haley; two sons, James (Stephanie PERKINS)
Dial Jr. and Christopher Haley; a daughter, April DIAL (Randy) Brady; 8 grandchildren;
two sisters, Sandy Tanner and Diane GANN (Tom) Frye att ’66 Cl 69.

arrangements. A Memorial Service was held at the Fuller Family Worship Center in

Johnson, John C. ’37 & ‘38

John, 92, of Akron, OH passed away 07 Sep 2011. John grew up in Toledo, OH. He
came to MVA his sophomore year. While here, he was asked to learn to do electrical
work. This was the beginning of work that ended in 1981 when he retired from being an
electrician! He graduated from MVA in 1937 with a normal school diploma. He
continued at MVA in 1938 and took additional class work for which he graduated in
1938. He attended Washington Missionary College for two semesters, while working as
an electrician. He then returned to Akron, where his sweetheart, Alberta HEADDERLY
lived and he married her. He spent 63 yrs. with her. They enjoyed traveling, taking
pictures, and hiking. John worked diligently for the Akron (OH) SDA Church where his
duties included being assistant treasurer. During WW2, he worked as an x-ray tech in US
for the army.

He is survived by two sons, Wayne (Michelle CHU) Johnson ’64 and David (Ada)
Johnson ’65. His wife preceded him in death in Feb 2006.

A memorial service was held at the Akron (OH) First S.D.A. Church on 25 Sep 2011.
Interment was in Greenlawn Cemetery in Akron, OH.

Loveridge, Ardyth Jean UFFNER att ’38 Cl ‘39

Ardyth, 89, passed away 20 Feb 2011 in Newark, OH following a stroke. She was born
to Arthur and Isabella GATTEN Uffner on 22 Nov 1921. Due to the Depression, Ardyth
was able to attend MVA only her junior year where she worked in the kitchen and dining
room. While at MVA, music brought much joy to Ardyth. She was part of a double
quartet which traveled around OH. Her MVA friends lasted a lifetime. In 1939 she
graduated from Newark High School. Then in 1947 she married John C. Loveridge ’47
of Mt. Vernon, OH whose family had many MVA graduates/attendees. She was a
devoted wife, mother, and grandmother as well as an ‘amazing” cook, hostess, and bread
baker. She enjoyed gardening, canning, making homemade ice cream and mowing the
lawn. Her entire life was spent in Newark, OH where she was a life long member of the
SDA Church, serving over 70 yrs. as church organist/pianist and Sabbath School teacher.

She is survived by her husband of 63 yrs., John C. Loveridge ’47; a son, Mark (Linda)
Loveridge ‘67 of Newark, OH; a daughter, Linda LOVERIDGE (Robert) Megale ’71 of
Newark, OH; two grandchildren. Ardyth was preceded in death by a grandson, John
Megale; a brother, William Uffner; two sisters, Joshepine UFFNER Rizzo att ’31 or ’32
and Frances UFFNER McClintock att ’31 or ’32.

Arrangements were handled by the Criss-Schoedinger Funeral Home in Newark with
funeral services on 23 Feb 2011 at the SDA Church. Pastor Tom Hughes officiated.
Burial was in Barnes Cemetery.

Mitchell, Lee
Lee, 63, of Howard, OH passed away 22 May 2011 in Mt. Vernon, OH. He was born 19
Jan 1948 in Madison, S.D. to Gerald and Lila BAGLEY Mitchell. He was administrator
for the Country Court Nursing Home in Mt. Vernon. He was a member of the Kiwanis
Club, Knox County Chamber of Commerce and the Fredericktown (OH) S.D.A. Church.
He enjoyed sporting clays, golfing, and fishing.

He is survived by his wife of 39 yrs., Gloria LEMBCKE Mitchell; two sons, Chad (Nona)
Mitchell ’95 of Huntington, WV and Chris Mitchell ’01 of Howard, OH; a daughter,
Kimberly (Aaron ’99) MITCHELL Myers ’99 of Howard, OH; three grandchildren; his
mother Lila Mitchell of Huron, SD; a brother, Larry (Jean) Mitchell of Huron, SD. Lee
was preceded in death by his father, Gerald Mitchell.

Services were held 25 May 2011 at the Mt. Vernon SDA Hill Church with Pastor Ron
Vozar officiating. Burial was in Mt. Vernon (OH) Memorial Gardens Cemetery. The
Flowers-Snyder Funeral Home handled arrangements.

Niswander, Ronald ‘51

Edwin Ronald Niswander, 77, of Alpharetta, GA passed away 31 Mar 2011 from cancer.
He was born in Bluefield, WV on 01 May 1933 to Lee and Hazel FRENCH Niswander.
Ron was president of the Class of 1951 for all four years. He worked for the government
retiring after 35 yrs. from the US Public Health Services, Centers for Disease Control and
the Health Care and Financing Administration.

He is survived by his wife, Linda H. Niswander; a son Timothy (Kathy) Niswander; a
daughter, Julie NISWANDER Lowry; four granddaughters; three great-grandchildren; a
brother, Lee Niswander ’47 of Youngstown, OH.

Services were handled by Byars Funeral Home in Cummings, GA. He was cremated and
buried in Alpharetta, GA.

Northcutt, Steve R. att ’71, Cl ‘73

Steve, 55, of Hamilton, OH passed away 09 Jan 2011 at Fort Hamilton Hosp. He was
born 04 Feb 1955 in Hamilton, OH to Don and July LOHR Northcutt. He graduated
from Garfield High School and owned a carpenter/contractor business. He was a member
of the S.D.A. Church and enjoyed playing the guitar and fishing, especially with his
grandson, Evan, who was the highlight of his life.

He is survived by his mother, Judy Northcutt of Hamilton, OH; a son, Aaron (Amanda)
Northcutt; his brother, Randy (Dianne SPANGENBERG ‘76) Northcutt of Hamilton,
OH; a grandson, Evan Northcutt; his grandmother, Audrey Williams. Steve was
preceded in death by his father, Don Northcutt and a son, Zachary Northcutt, who died at
age 13 of an asthma attack.

Visitation was held at the Webster Funeral Home in Fairfield on 14 Jan 2011. Pastor Joel
Rivera officiated the funeral. Burial was in Greenwood Cemetery.

Roy, 78, of Berkeley Springs, WV, passed away on 17 Jan 2011 at his home under
Hospice care. He was born 15 Apr 1932 in Osaka, VA to Lawrence B. and Doris
Marguerite HANNAFORD Penley. His father was a coal miner. Roy attended MVA
during his senior year of 1951 although he didn’t finish here. He graduated from Takoma
Academy in Takoma Park, MD. He was a Korean War Veteran in the US Air Force. He
retired in Berkeley Springs, WV in 1999 from Lucent Technologies. He’d been a
repairman. As a member of the Berkeley Springs S.D.A. Church, Roy was the
Community Services coordinator. He was an avid gardener, builder and car enthusiast.
Roy was outgoing, caring person with a warm smile. He’d had a history of cancer of the
prostate, colon, liver and lungs. He also suffered from heart disease.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Margaret CAPLIN Penley; four daughters, Linda M.
PENLEY Hahn of Tanney Town, MD, Doreen M. PENLEY Quimby of Olney, MD,
Sandra Lee PENLEY Grady of Bradenton, FL, and Sharon A. PENLEY Frost of
Stephens City, VA; seven grandchildren; three great grandchildren; one brother, Delmar
Penley of Big Stone Gap, VA; one sister, Marilyn PENLEY Kline att ’57 Cl’58 of OH.
Roy was preceded in death by two brothers, David Penley att ’57 Cl’58 and Kenny
Penley.


Roy was cremated. A memorial service was held at the Berkeley Springs S.D.A. Church
in Berkeley Springs, WV on Sunday, 23 Jan 2011 with Pastor Hal Butman.

Perrone, Terri Lynn –fac

Terri, 24, of Maple Grove, MN passed away 18 Dec 2010. She was born in Oxnard, CA
on 24 Mar 1964. She attended South Lancaster Academy in South Lancaster, MA and
Atlantic Union College, where she obtained a degree in office administration. Here she
met Joe Perrone –fac who she married. Terri worked in many educational institutions in
secretarial work including MVA, where she was a cashier and worked in accounts
payable. For 19 yrs. she battled cancer without a complaint and with faith in God. Terri
loved God and tried to exemplify His character in all she did. She enjoyed Pathfinders
and went to Osh Kosh, WI in 2005 and 2009. She loved being outdoors at beaches and in
the snowy mountains skiing.

Her survivors include husband, Joe Perrone –fac; a son, Michael Perrone; a daughter,
Jessica Perrone.

George, 90, passed away 12 Jul 2011 in Bellville, OH. He was born 08 Aug 1920 in
Lorain Co, OH, to Elmer George and Rosella DRAPER Prosser. He was the former

John, 86, of Mt. Vernon, OH passed away 17 Jan 2011 following complications of knee
surgery including a heart attack. He was born 11 May 1924 in Altoon, PA to Paul
Edward Reep and Jane STUMME Reep. He served in WW2 in the South Pacific as a
U.S. Navy medic. He received a Purple Heart for his service. John worked as a brick
and block mason in construction and also as a building inspector for the Fairfield
Alabama Housing Authority. He was a member of the Seventh-day Adventist Hill
Church in Mt. Vernon, OH.

He is survived by his children, Peggy Jo Reep, Paul (Kathy) Reep and Karen Specht, all
of Orlando, FL; Ralph (Suzanne) Reep of Deltona, FL; stepchildren, Robert (Sandy) Hall
and Wanda (Curtis) Biggs, both of Birmingham, AL; Jack (Rattana) Hissong ’59 of
Bangkok, Thailand, Terry (Pam) Hissong of Mt. Vernon, OH, and Britt (Desiree)
Hissong ’79 of Jacksonville, FL.; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; his
brother, Gerald (Betty) Reep of West Palm Beach, FL; and his special friend, Maxine

Saffles, John and Nancy

Since the last Alumni News, we were informed of the passing away of the parents of two
alumni, David Saffles’67 and Jeff Saffles ‘77. Their father, John, passed away in Aug
2010 and mother, Nancy, 79, of Akron, OH passed away 19 Feb 2011.

Survivors include David (Mary) Saffles ’67 of Massillon, OH and Jeff (Angela) Saffles
’77 of Akron, OH; daughters, Wendi (Fred) Schlegel, Rebecca (Fred) Martin, Patricia
Fairchild, Tammara (Timothy) Howell, Tonya (Edward) Johnson; 25 grandchildren; 15
great grandchildren. They were preceded in death by two great granddaughters.

Funeral services for Nancy were held 25 Feb 2011 at the Anthony Funeral Home Kucko-
Anthony-Kertesz Chapel in Akron, OH. Pastors Ted Bartter and Jerry Chase officiated.
Interment was in Lakewood Cemetery.

Simmons, Arthur Earl ‘53

Art, 75, passed away in New Mexico on 13 May 2011, following an illness of 12 yrs., the
last 2 of which required constant care. He was born the son of Everett and Minna HOAR
Simmons in Providence, RI. He served in Guam with the US Navy. During his career,
Art did construction work, was in business as a mechanic and engraver, and ran a KOA
Campground. He enjoyed being an aircraft pilot for small planes and was licensed for
commercial airlines.

He is survived by his wife, Evelyn Simmons; step children, Tom Whitehall and Barbara
Childres and adopted granddaughter, Stacy SIMMONS Francis; additionally, two
grandchildren and two step grandchildren; a sister, Dorothy SIMMONS Nelson ’50.

Memorial services were held for Art who was cremated. Burial was in Rio Rancho, NM.

Lawrence, 96, of Mount Vernon, OH passed away 12 May 2011. He was born 18 Dec
1914 to Augustus Lawrence and Ella Cooper Simmons in Mt. Vernon, OH. He was
married to the late Doris Isabelle CROWDER Simmons from Marion, OH for 59 yrs.
Lawrence was owner/operator of Simmons Disposal Service and worked as a farmer until
1975 when he retired. He was a life-long resident of Mt. Vernon and a member of the St.
Paul’s Episcopal Church. Lawrence was an avid horse and cattleman. He is survived by
his daughter, Varian SIMMONS Wilson of Reynoldsburg, OH; two granddaughters;
three great granddaughters; a great great grandson; a sister, Dr. Ellamae L. Simmons
(att.) of Oakland, CA. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Laureen Simmons and
two sisters, Georganna SIMMONS Mitchell ’28 and Rowena SIMMONS Rutland.

Services were held at the St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Mt. Vernon, OH on 17 May
2011 with Pastor Karl Stevens officiating. Burial was in Mound View Cemetery, Mt.
Vernon, OH. Dilley-Lasater Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Charles, 87, of Mt. Vernon, OH passed away 02 Apr 2011 in Howard, OH. He was born
21 Apr 1923 in Steuben, OH to Dan and Martha COLEMAN Smith. He was a veteran of
WW2. In 1983 Charles retired from the F.J. Egner and Son Trucking Co. in Canton, OH
where he worked for 37 yrs. He was a member of the Canton Motorcycle Club, the
UltraVan R.V. Club, the American Legion in Mt. Vernon and the Teamsters Local 92 in
Canton. He was also a member of the SDA Church.

Charles is survived by his wife of over 69 yrs., Helen BEATTY Smith att ‘37-’41 Cl ’42

Stepanske, Michael “Mitch” Kenneth ‘61

Mitch of Silver Spring, MD passed away 19 Feb 2011. Mitch was born in May 1942 and
graduated from Columbia Union College in 1965. he worked as an auditor for the US
Treasury Department until his retirement.

He is survived by his wife of 45 yrs., Nancy WEIDMAN Stepanske ’61 of Silver Spring,
MD; daughters, Nancy (Ramin), Jennifer (Rabie), and Leslie (Tony); two grandsons; his
mother, Aldrea Stepanske*; brothers, Bruce (Jeanette) Stepanske ’58 of Ooltewah, TN
and Richard Stepanske att ’65 Cl ’67.

Van Nostrand Jr.,Guy

Guy, 96, of Mt. Vernon, OH passed away 01 May 2011. He was born in Trinway, Oh to
Guy L. and Rachel HALL Van Nostrand on 05 June 1914. As a graduated of Mt. Vernon
(OH ) High School, he excelled in sports. He continued playing sports at Ohio State
Univ. where he graduated with a Bachelors in Education and Masters in Education
degrees. He was a teacher and athletic coach for various schools throughout Ohio. He
enjoyed Indian artifacts, history, and archeology as well as fishing. With his wife June he
collected antiques. Inspired by the fact he had attended three one room school houses,
Guy helped preserve an old one room school which is now a museum. He built and
helped operate Northside Manor Nursing Home in Mt. Vernon, OH, from 1949- 1966. It
is still in operation today as The Laurels. Guy belonged to many organizations in the
community.

He is survived by sons, Gary (Ruth) Van Nostrand ’58 and Richard (Jo) Hawkins of Mt.
Vernon, OH, James (Pam) Hawkins of Spring, TX; daughters, Patricia Davis ’60 of
Charlotte, NC, Susie (John) Peters ’63 of Clearwater, Fl, Susan (Dan) Snyder of Mt.
Vernon, OH; 13 grandchildren including, Lori Van NOSTRAND (Steve ’77) Wycoff att
’81 Cl ’82 of Marysville, OH, Vicki Van NOSTRAND (Gerald) Erskine ’80 of Caldwell,
WV; 13 great grandchildren, including Alex ERSKINE ’10, Alyssa ERSKINE’07, and

Vogt, Robert David att ’44, 45 Cl ‘45

Bob, 85, of Mount Vernon, OH passed away in Columbus, OH on 17 Sep 20ll following
a surgery for a brain hematoma. He was born in Davy, WV to John F. and Lena
WILLIAMS Vogt on 24 Apr 1926. He attended the Rochester Institute of Technology in
Rochester, NY and the Columbus College of Art and Design in Columbus, OH. In 1947
he joined Printing Arts Press and was the owner and president until his retirement. Bob
was involved I the Mount Vernon Chamber of Commerce and the Toastmaster Club,
including being the former district governor of this organization. He was a life member
of the Sons of the Confederate Veterans—Ripley Camp 1535 in Worthington, OH. Bob
was a living grandchild of a Confederate vet. During WW2, Bob served in the Army in
the Philippines. He was a member of the Hill SDA Church in Mt. Vernon, OH.

Bob is survived by his wife of 60 yrs. Verna L. WEAVER Vogt of Mt. Vernon, OH; two
daughters, Zandra VOGT (Zak) Smith ’71 and Rhonda VOGT (Charles) Gherman ’75
both of Mt. Vernon, OH; a brother, William “Bill” (June) Vogt ’40 of Hendersonville,
NC; two sisters, Pauline “Polly” VOGT Templeton of Hendersonville, NC and Shirley
VOGT (Richard) Schmachtenberg of MD ’54; four grandchildren, including Sibley
(Darren ’90) Poland. Besides his parents he was predeceased by a daughter, Tonda Vogt;

Services were conducted at the Dowds-Snyder Funeral Home in Mt. Vernon, OH on 21
Sep 2011 with Pastor Fred Shoemaker. Burial was in Mound View Cemetery in Mt.
Vernon, OH with military honors.

Watts, Dorothy EATON ‘56

Dorothy, of Silver Spring, MD passed away on 08 Nov 2010. She was an author,
missionary, and founder of orphanages and children’s homes. Her friends and family
look forward to a joyful reunion on the resurrection morning.

She is survived by her husband of 51 yrs. Ron Watts; sons, Stephen and David Watts; a
daughter, Esther WATTS (Rupert); 6 grandchildren.

A viewing was held at the Southern Asia SDA Church in Silver Spring, MD on 10 Nov
2010. The funeral was held the next day.

Weseman, Russell Lee
Russell passed away 17 July 2011, in Napa, ID.
He was born 05 Apr 1930 in Mountain View, CA to Arnold and Mildred Weseman. He
attended Mountain View Academy and graduated in 1948. He then took a printing
apprenticeship at Pacific Press Publishing Assoc. in Mountain View. In 1951 he served
as an Army combat medic in the Korean War. In 1956 he moved from CA to Takoma
Park, MD where he began working at the Review and Herald Publishing Assoc. Here he
met Jacqueline Joan Kriner ’52. They were married in Dec 1957 in New York City.
After working in printing for 37 years, Russell had a second career as a school bus driver
for 17 yrs. He was active in the church especially with the youth.

He is survived by his wife, Jacqueline Joan KRINER Weseman ‘52; a son, James
Weseman; a daughter, Kathy WESEMAN; brother-in-law, James Kriner ’49; sister-in-
law, Loretta KRINER Priest ’48.

Westner, Frances C. SUMMERS ‘58

Fran, of Rockville, Md passed away on 20 Mar 2011.

She is survived by her husband, Joseph; a son, Joe (Michelle) Westner; a daughter,
Sharon (William); 4 grandchildren.

Services were held at the Barber Funeral Home in Laytonsville, MD on 25 Mar 2011.
Interment followed in All Souls Catholic Cemetery in Germantown, MD.

Wolcott, R. Andrew ‘39

Andrew of Lyles, TN passed away 19 Oct 2010 after having a stroke then pneumonia. He
was one of seven children in the Wolcott family. After graduating from MVA, Andy
went to work in a print shop in Mt. Vernon, OH. Just before WW2, he enrolled at
Emmanual Missionary College. After 4 yrs. there, he graduated in 1945 with a BA in
Religion and a minor in Education. In August of 1945 he married Louise BARTLETT.
She was a teacher. They were called to Grand Rapids, MI teaching grades 1-8. After 2
yrs. there, Andy did a ministerial internship in Detroit. In 1950 he went overseas and
taught academy and college students at Southeast Asia Junior College in Singapore.
After this, he taught in Canada before returning to Andrews Univ. where he got a masters
degree. Following 26 yrs. in CA in educational and pastoral work and 10 yrs in
Washington in pastoral work, Andy and Louise retired in TN in 1986. This was followed
by 10 more years of pastoral work and then a second retirement in 1999.

He is survived by his wife, Louise BARTLETT Wolcott; three sons; a sister, Merita
“Rita” WOLCOTT Gavin ’49. He was preceded in death by brothers, Lawrence Wolcott
’39 in 1998 and Cecil Wolcott att ’41 Cl ’42 in 2006; a sister, Clara Julia WOLCOTT
Engen ’39 in 2009 and two other siblings.

Wolfe, Laurence E. - fac

Lawrence, 91, of Newbury Park, CA passed away on 21 Nov 2010 in Thousand Oaks,
CA following a long illness. He was born in Funkstown, MD on 23 Dec 1918. He was a
navigator on a B-17 bomber in the Air Force during WW2. A favorite of students as
MVA, Lawrence taught math and industrial arts and became the leader of the Medical
Cadet Corps. He was a resident of Ventura County, CA for 51 yrs.

Wood, Lois Ann McKENZIE att ’57 Cl?

Lois, 68, of Bull Shoals, AR, passed away on 15 Feb 2011. She was born 13 Jul 1942 in
Frostburg, MD to Robert and Anna Es Merelda DURR McKenzie. She had a love for
animals, especially her prize chickens, Crystal Mountain Fancies.

She is survived by two sons, Robert Welch of AR and Glenn W. Wood, Jr. of FL; two
grandchildren; a brother, Robert McKenzie ’51 of Mt. Vernon, OH. She was preceded in
death by a brother, Alvin McKenzie; a sister, Erma McKENZIE Butler ’48.

A celebration of life was held 19 Feb 2011 at the Conner-Hankins Funeral Home Chapel
in Mountain Home, AR with Pastor Jonathan Belew officiating. Burial was in Fairview
Cemetery near Bull Shoals, AR.

Workman, Frances R. ‘56

Fran of Mt. Vernon, OH passed away on 19 Apr 2011. She was born 18 Mar 1938 in
Lima, Oh to John A. and Norma F. VANCE Workman. She was a member of the Mt.
Vernon (OH) Hill S.D.A. Church.

She is survived by tow nieces, Donna Jean (Ralph) Surdal and Jamie (Steve) Yoder of
Zanesville, OH; a great neice, Candee M. Kilgore of Burleson, TX. Besides her parents,
she was preceded in death by a sister, Imogene D. WORKMAN Kilgore ‘45.

A graveside memorial was to be planned. The Dilley –Lasater Funeral Home in Mt.
Vernon handled the arrangements.
