									The Odyssey

Resume and Cover Letter Assignment (in brief):

Sometime in the very neat future (think: 2012), a man travels to the past (or into literature)
and accidentally brings a character back from the Odyssey. When he can’t find a way to
return the character to his or her proper time, he allows the character to stay with him as
long as he or she gets a job; in the meantime, the man will search for a way to return the
character.

According to the man’s basic instructions, the character writes a resume; however, when
the man proofreads it, he discovers that the character wrote it in accordance with his or
her culture, not the culture of 2012! He points out what it is that needs to be changed, and
the character makes the changes, writes a cover letter, and applies for the job.

Your task is to:

   1. Write the character’s original resume, which went by the culture and traditions that
      are presented in the Odyssey.

   2. Write the character’s new resume, which goes by our own culture and traditions.
Add anything he or she might need and remove anything that a potential employer
now would not believe. (For example, would an employer now accept a goddess as a
      reference?)

   3. Invent a job for the character to apply for that corresponds with his or her skills or
interests. Write a cover letter for the application for that job (to go with the
      resume).

To whom it may concern,

I learned of the tour guide position from your website and am looking to fill the position for the
summer. I am a born leader—I was born into a wealthy family and had to command my
household from a young age. I have also commanded a ship for over ten years and led an army
in the war for another ten years. I am comfortable navigating new places and enjoy learning
more about them. My resourcefulness will allow me to overcome any unforeseen obstacles. I
am a convincing actor and a famous storyteller; these qualities will allow me to captivate the
audience as I give the tour.

I am very excited about this opportunity to learn more about the area and to meet new people.
Please e-mail me at odysseus.polytropos@gmail.com if you have any questions or wish to
arrange an interview. If I do not hear from you, I will contact you in the next two weeks to see if
you require any additional information regarding my qualifications.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Sincerely,

Odysseus Polytropos
