Cost of Attendance - How to use this spreadsheet
This spreadsheet is to help you and us:
a. To make the process as speedy and as simple as possible
b. To cut out the risk of your application being rejected and you having to start again
You should also use the guidance on website to see the order in which you need to do each stage of your application

Information sent by the US Dept of Education to schools also includes all those who may not enroll
Schools are only told what has been done by an applicant
There is nothing which tells the applicant that everything they need to do has been completed
There is nothing which tells the school that everything the applicant needs to do has been completed

There are sets of documents which we have to receive before we can certify and complete your loans
Without this spreadsheet the application process would take many days or even weeks and may still fail as incomplete
So this spreadsheet and checklist is used to help you and the school in several ways
1. It tells us that you are serious about coming to Bath
2. It tells us - and you - that everything needed has been completed
3. It is a trigger for us to process your application; without it nothing will be processed
4. It tells you how much you are eligible to borrow (Section 4 of the spreadsheet)
5. It tells you how much of your loan will be retained by the government as origination fee
6. It calculates the cost of the originations fees and increases the PLUS loan to cover them
6. It then tells us how much you want to borrow
7. The checklist is to help you ensure that we have everything we need for your application
8. The checklist will tell you the consequence of anything missing

For your information, the Basis of Costs tab shows you how we calculated the Cost of Attendance

The flowchart, also from our website, will guide you through what you need to do
To ensure that your application is as smooth as possible, you must complete the spreadsheet and the checklist

When we will receive this spreadsheet and attachments it is our trigger that you have done everything for us to adminster your loan
If anything on the checklist is missing we will not be able to start to process your application
If anything on the checklist or spreadsheet is untrue your application will be rejected by the ED Dept's systems

these Costs are Calculated

The exchange rate is set to be the worst possible to ensure that you have enough money after converting to
£sterling. On the set date in May, all the banks are visited between Strand and St Paul's Cathedral and the $USD
rate noted. The retail exchange rate is then checked for the past 6 months. The worst rate of the two scenarios is
selected and rounded up by 1 cent. This is sufficient to enable loans to be calculated and disbursed. Should the rate
change unfavourably once the course has started, then the whole Cost of Attendance can be reviewed again. The
rate will not be re-assessed until after the end of the registration period.

First, Check the prices of all halls of residence and select the highest below self-contained suite. Second, search for
the average price of a room in a shared flat/house and for a studio flat (use www.bathstudentpad.co.uk
www.rightmove.co.uk and general estate agent searches). Select the higher average price of the two scenarios.

Keep all shopping receipts for the month of April, which normally includes a long expensive weekend (Easter) at
home. This covers all the bills for a month for 3 adults including alcohol, all household cleaning materials and all
(expensive) organic food plus one expensive weekend. Divide the weekly average by 2. This is more than enough to
cover the food, provisions and power for a single person.

The cost of a single course pack (for the term) applied for each week which is more than sufficient for book
purchase. Check with your Academic Department as some courses may have additional costs.

This is the cost for an annual bus pass for Bath area

              Incidentals, social, gym etc

Cost of two BA return flights Heathrow/LA return travelling at weekends and rounded up by £100 to nearest £100

cost of a good quality laptop from PC World plus a printer plus £25 month broadband charge and rounded up by
£100 to the nearest £100; or round to £1,000; whichever is the greater

Visa costs £255 plus cost of midweek return next day flight US New York to LA (highest cost United Airlines $860
rounded up to nearest $100) then rounded up to nearest £100. Actual is £763, round up to £800

Your government takes an origination fee.
There was a partial refund of the origination fee which has been withdrawn for 2012 entry
If loan repayments are not all on-time then the refund which was given to you for any loans pre 2012 will be charged back to you

Postgraduates - The term starts on 26th September 2012 but the loan year will be 1st October to 30 Sept (365 days)
Undergraduates - The term starts on 1st October 2012 and the loan year will be 1st October to 29 June (end of final
              term)
These dates are set to minimise the risk of your loan being rejected by overlapping a previous year.

The transfer of funds from ED Dept to our UK bank and a refund cheque for your living money takes at least 10 days.
These dates are a full 10 days from the date our office open after Christmas/Easter or the start of term (whichever is
              the later)
WARNING - THESE DATES ARE EXPECTED AND NOT ACTUAL. Allow for about 3 days delay - just in case.
012 will be charged back to you
