            as an F-1/J-1 student
1. Report arrival to SISS (check in!) within 15 days

2. Update address information within 10 days in SISWEB

3. Update SISS regarding changes to your I-20/DS-2019:
   program extension, financial sponsorship, major, degree
   level, dependents

4. Maintain full-time status

5. Apply for work authorization before beginning employment

6. Maintain health insurance coverage

Failure to follow these requirements may negatively impact your
                         immigration status

Maintain Full-Time Enrollment
F-1 and J-1 students are required by
immigration to pursue a full course
of study every quarter during
the academic year at UC Davis

               12 Units* = Full-Time
       Academic Year = Fall, Winter and Spring

*Important Note:
   •Undergraduate students must meet minimum
   progress requirements for their college
   •Law students: 10 units per semester
   •Waitlisted units do not count towards the 12-unit
   minimum unless you successfully add the units

Exceptions to Full-Time Enrollment

• Limited academic difficulty

• Approved graduate research

                Exceptions are allowed

• You must request an extension of your I-20 or
  DS-2019 BEFORE the program end date
• Memorize your program end date

• Extension requires:
  • Academic or graduate advisor’s approval
  • New proof of financial support

Important Reminders

• Contact your International Student Advisor if:
   • You decide to withdraw from UC Davis
   • You are dropped from classes for non-payment
   • You are dismissed from UC Davis for unsatisfactory
     academic performance

• These can have serious consequences on your
  immigration status in the U.S.

SISS Authorization for Travel
Documents required for travel:
   • Valid passport – must be valid for 6 months at time of
     re-entry
   • Valid F-1 or J-1 visa
   • Valid I-20 or DS-2019 authorized for travel by SISS
     (signature must be less than 6 months old).
   • SISS must also sign J-2 and F-2 dependents’
     documents for travel

    Grace Period

• F-1 Students: 60 days after program completion
• J-1 Students: 30 days after program completion
• “Grace period” = permitted stay after completion of
  academic program
• Does not require an extension request
• Time counts from actual program completion date at
  UC Davis (does not always match program end date
  on I-20/DS-2019)
• During your grace period you:
           • cannot work or travel internationally,
             except to depart the U.S.
           • may travel in the U.S. or take a holiday
           • should NOT overstay your grace period

SEVIS Transfer
1. You need an I-20/DS-2019 from the school you
   are attending
2. Transferring in and out of UC Davis requires
   electronic transfer in SEVIS
3. Notify SISS Advisor if transferring in to UCD or
   transferring out of UCD
4. SISS will transfer SEVIS record in or out of UC
   Davis

Dependents

• Dependent derives status from student
  F-1 → F-2

• F-2 Dependents:
   •   Require I-20’s
   •   Cannot work
   •   Cannot attend school (with the exception of children K-12)
   •   Should not remain in the U.S. without the F-1 student

J-2 Dependents
• J-2 dependents require DS-2019’s
  J-1 → J-2
• J-2 spouses can apply for work authorization
• J-2 dependents should consult with an SISS advisor
  if interested in attending school (with the exception of

• Dependents should not remain in the U.S. without the
  J-1 student
• J-2’s are required to have health
  insurance in the U.S.

              Drop-in Advising Hours

          •   Monday afternoons from 1:00pm-4:00pm
          •   Thursday afternoons from 1:00pm-4:00pm
          •   Friday mornings 9:00-12:00pm



Drop-in advising should be used for simple questions and issues
that can be completed in 10 minutes or less. For more complicated
or extended issues, you will be asked to make an appointment with
your alpha appropriate advisor. Students will be seen on a first-
come, first-served basis. To determine the wait time, students will
be asked to sign in at the SISS front desk.
