A Taste of Wine
By Frank Mangio
Carlsbad Wine Merchant owner, Kathy Bankerd and
Corporate Officer, Larry Kinser.
Happy 2nd year anniversary to Carlsbad Wine Merchants, that happy band of wine lovers that left the corporate
world and found their groove in the world of wine. There is no wine retailer with more passion and knowledge of
the wines that are offered than Carlsbad Wine Merchants, led by Kathy Bankerd.
As you read this profile, she is busy directing a new second location in the Pleasant Hill section of the East Bay
area of San Francisco. Just recently, she enlarged her Carlsbad location and now has a spacious, villa-like, tasting
and events room along side her retail store. A massive bar commands attention, with a glamorous painting
watching over the guests, as the bar's focal point. Another unique feature is the espresso coffee area with drinks
such as lattes, cappuccinos and macchiatos. Kathy has bumped up the frequency of her wine tasting events, with
13 on this month's calendar, but more about that later.
Carlsbad's own branded wine, “Carlsbad Red” was introduced last summer, a 2004 Zinfandel/Petite Sirah blend
from Sonoma that was an instant hit. Kathy came up with the name, label, art and pricing just for her customers
and the rest, as they say, is history. Now, in a move to the next level, she has stocked the shop with 24 cases of
“Carlsbad Red Reserve” that promises to present flavors of raspberry, cherry and seductive spices, and just a hint
of black pepper.
Customer service is huge for Kathy so she's added gift items, cheeses, a wine club and coffee, as well as wines
from around the world that collectors search for. “Our team continues to search the world to add to the best wine
experience for Carlsbad,” she said.
The events that remain for the month are really special. This Thursday at 6pm a “Sensory Analysis Seminar” will
be presented along with Riedel Glassware, considered the best in the world. You can learn to taste like an expert
with in-house sommeliers and reserve wines from Raymond. Cost is $80.00 including a set of 4 Riedel wine
glasses. This Saturday from 3 to 6pm is the 3rd annual “Grape Bowl,” a fun and informative event with a taste-off
of 25 of the wines that made the top 100 in Wine Spectator. Cost is $50. per person to benefit the Boys and Girls
Club of Carlsbad. For ticket information to both major events, call 888-760-WINE. Long term plans for summer
include a large “Festa Italiana” and Italian Wine Expo. Carlsbad Wine Merchants is located in the Island
Shopping Center, at Faraday and College. Check out their website at www.carlsbadwinemerchants.com.
A new state-of-the-art equipped wine storage business has taken root in Oceanside. Coastal Wine Storage services
the growing wine collector with a properly climate-controlled series of storage rooms, allowing wines to mature at
the proper pace. Other caretaking features include proper light, temperature and humidity, at 55 to 57 degrees and
65 to 70% humidity. Room spaces includes 20 case units all the way up to 400 case walk-ins. Shipping can go
direct to Coastal Wine Storage. The business can also pick up wine cases to store in their facility.
Access is every day of the year. Lockers are rented out in 3, 6 or 12 month periods with pricing based on capacity.
A 20 case locker can be as little as $485. a year. Security is big with this business. Video surveillance, storage
access, privacy and alarm and fire systems offer maximum protection. For more information call 760-630-4171.
An elementary teacher starts a new job in St. Paul, Minnesota.
Trying to make a good impression her first day, she tells everyone
that she is a Vikings Fan and that everyone in the class who is also
a Vikings Fan should raise their arm.
All but one little girl did and when questioned, she explained that
she was Not a Vikings Fan.
The teacher slightly shocked asked what her favorite team was and
she replied “ I'm a Charger Fan, and proud of it.”
The shocked teacher asked her why she was a Charger Fan.
The girl replied that her mom was a Charger Fan and her dad was a
Charger Fan so that made her a Charger Fan.
The annoyed teacher tells her “That's no reason for you to be a Charger Fan.
You don't have to be like your parents. What if your mother was a prostitute
and your father was a drug addict and a car thief…what would you be then?”
She replied: “A Raider Fan”.
Loyalty in Marriage
A woman's husband had been slipping in and out of a coma for several
months, yet she had stayed by his bedside every single day.
One day, he motioned for her to come nearer. As she sat by him, he
whispered, eyes full of tears, "You know what? You have been with me
all through the bad times. When I got fired, you were there to support me.
When my business failed, you were there. When I got shot, you were by
my side. When we lost the house, you stayed right here. When my health
started failing, you were still by my side.........You know what?"
”What dear?" she gently asked, smiling as her heart began to fill with warmth.
“I think you're bad luck, get the heck away from me.”
